Best starter Retinol product

swimster01 · 15/01/2018 20:04

I was watching the BBC programme about beauty products and the benefits of using Retinol.

Can anyone suggest a good Retinol product to start with? I understand it's better to use a low dosage product (say 1%) and build up gradually.

Thanks

Which is the stronger , [or most efeective ] 1% in squalane or 2% retinoid emulsion, its very confusing?
I have sent for both

BagelGoesWalking · 19/01/2018 00:47

This is a good "starter" retinOID.

Don't stay with RetinOL, you have to work your way up to it - that's the safest way anyway. Start Retinoid by using once or twice a week. Check reactions and you can increase to 3/4 times a week but give your skin a break. .

Clean skin
Make sure skin is dry
Apply Retinoid
Apply oil/moisturiser - no other actives.
Daily sunscreen - not just moisturiser or foundation containing spf - if you don't you'll undo any good work done by the Retinoid.

If you don't understand it, don't buy it! Why would you put something in your face when you don't know how it works or what consequences it may have?

1% Retinol is far stronger than 2% Retinoid.

I once tried retinol cream, and my face went red (so probably too strong?!) But mostly I really disliked the SMELL

Does all retinol cream have that awful smell? I can Never use self tan either (as IMO they all stink)

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 19/01/2018 07:24

Bagel's is the one I use, haven't any irritations.

Mulberrysilk · 19/01/2018 08:32

Late 40's. Have been using RetinA for around 3 years. My skin is better than it was turning 40. I use factor 30spf. I've never noticed a smell of any retinol products.

HuskyMcClusky · 19/01/2018 08:39

The retinol I use has virtually no smell.

MaureenNervosa · 19/01/2018 08:47

I have melasma and wear SPF 50 every day.
Does retinol help? Or does it make it worse?

Omnis · 19/01/2018 08:57

I'm in my 50's.
I started on obagi retinol cream then after 2 months used obagi retin a 0.5%. Once I'd used all that up I upped to obagi retin a 1%. I wanted it for sun spots appearing on my forehead and jawline.

A year later & all sun spots are gone. ( unfortunately all freckles too.) But my skin has improved so much that I will never stop and I've saved a fortune as not buying any expensive creams.
I do also use vitamin c serum by timeless.

Can't believe I fell for all the beauty blogger hype for expensive products that have zero effect.
Also new sun spots that start to appear on my forehead get zapped with the retin a and disappear in a month.

I'm a pale skinned blonde who was brought up in Malta and Singapore ( RAF family ) so all the damage was done then.

Retinol needs to be converted to retin a by skin cells which is why it is not so affective. But a good starting point.
Sorry long post but I have been so impressed with how potent retin a is and so p!eased my sun spots have all gone.

MaureenNervosa · 19/01/2018 09:05

Omnis So all your sun spots are gone? That is brilliant. I think it is worth my trying a very low % of retinol and being diligent with the SPF50.
I am trying out The Ordinary Vitamin C 23% serum but it is too soon to see any results yet.

HuskyMcClusky · 19/01/2018 09:51

Omnis, sorry to be a pain - any chance you could link to the Obagi Retin A 1% please? I’ve tried googling but it only brings up Retinol 1%.

Omnis · 19/01/2018 10:07

Maureen, Yes all gone. Never use foundation now or any other make up coverage just bb cream and blusher.
Husky, I get my retin a from Skin Station. I couldn't afford a private dermatologist for a prescription. To use Skin Station jsut fill in their online form they call you back to confirm then you get 6 prescriptions to use. Posted from channel islands. £98 lasts 3 months.
I think using vitamin c helps speed the process up.

I don't work for Skin Station it took me a while to find a trusted site online.

HuskyMcClusky · 19/01/2018 10:07

Wow, fab - thank you!

MaureenNervosa · 19/01/2018 10:22

Thanks very much, Omnis. I'll also look up Skin Station.

Omnis · 19/01/2018 10:23

Bit worried you'll get sore skin if use retin a 1% as first option. I wasn't affected too badly but some people start off only using 2-3 times a week as very potent.

homebythesea · 19/01/2018 11:03

I use the Ordinary 2% retinoids- started every 2-3 day’s bit now use it every night. It has definitely resurfaced my skin and diminished huge open pores. I’m 47

onlyonaTuesday · 19/01/2018 11:15

If I was to buy a starter kit from the ordinary, say retinol, but c serum and spf.’could anyone recommend any.
I’ve look at their products but find it confusing.

OneDayIWish · 19/01/2018 11:46

FartsMeanHearts The programme was The Truth about Looking Good on BBC.

BagelGoesWalking · 19/01/2018 12:15

Onlyon start with a RetinOID rather than a RetinOL. See pic for a good "starter" one. You need to work your way up to using retinols.

Ok, I stupidly ordered Roche Posay Redermic R from Amazon. It has now arrived; there are no instructions withing the box, and the text on the box is entirely written in Portuguese.

I daren't use it without instructions. Can anyone give me a starter guide? (Though I'm not convinced it's real)

Mumsnut · 26/01/2018 15:26

Hang on: there's a video online. Just hope what's in the tube is real.

EssexMummy123456 · 26/01/2018 15:29

The Ordinary say's on their website that you can use the rosehip oil after the Retinoid?

Example regimen for general signs of age:
AM
Buffet, Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

PM
Buffet, Granactive Retinoid 2% or 5% in Squalane, 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil

lindyloo57 · 26/01/2018 17:56

onlyona tuesday, only use it at night, you can use moisturiser first or last,
look on the The ordinary site for more information.

Wtfdoicare · 26/01/2018 18:05

Mumsnut I've used the LRP one in the past before. It is fairly gentle for a retinol but if you haven't used one before, apply on clean skin in the evening every other or every two nights to begin with. If your skin doesn't react you can build up to every night.

expatmigrant · 28/01/2018 20:48

essex I was also confused about that comment. I ordered the 1% retinol (skin coping fine} and assumed that I could use the rosehip as mentioned on their website?
