Is this dress terribly dated?

I’ve a gala dinner to go to with work. I’m insignificant in that I’ll just “be there” but don’t want to look like shit. Nor can I afford anything new. I bought two new (well second hand) eBay frocks which don’t fit or suit so I’m loathe to buy anything else online. I can go to to max tomorrow but that’s it. Time run out. I got this at Coast 12 years ago. Silk. Pleated bit at front and satiny silk straps and longer tie. Be honest. Will it look awful and if not, what shoes please? Thanks very much in advance - honestly. I need your help!

I can see it and I think it looks fine!

whattoweartomorrow · 15/01/2018 20:00

I don't fully understand from that picture what's going on at the back, but I think a black and white dress is fairly understated so I doubt you'll look dated.

I'd wear fairly comfortable black heels, stud pearl earrings, and convey 'I'm a grown up at a work event: I look appropriate and like I'm putting exactly the right amount of effort in'

Polkadot1974 · 15/01/2018 20:00

Shoes? Black heels or other?

Greenteandchives · 15/01/2018 20:01

It looks fine. Black heels. Have a great time.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/01/2018 20:01

It's lovely and not dated. It's classic.

10thingsIhateAboutTheDailyMail · 15/01/2018 20:01

It looks really nice

I'd wear it, and I don't think I am very dated Wink

Does it fit well? That is the main criterion. If it fits you well, it should look great!

Margomyhero · 15/01/2018 20:02

Looks okay to me.

I keep dresses all my clothes for years .

fabulousfrumpyfeet · 15/01/2018 20:02

Bit hard to see what the front is like from the pic, but it looks nice, elegant and not dated, quite classic. I'm stuck on accessories tho, as that creamy gold colour doesn't suit me so I don't wear it. I'm tempted to suggest a darker gold shoes and bag.
If it helps I was on a budget going to a wedding recently and managed to find suitable shoes/bag etc for very reasonable price from eBay (new, not used).

fabulousfrumpyfeet · 15/01/2018 20:04

Sorry is the trim white? Thought it was creamy gold!

Enigma78 · 15/01/2018 20:05

That looks like a classic dress. Black heels, bag & a wrap/shawl?

Polkadot1974 · 15/01/2018 20:29

Phew. Thanks. It’s a creamy white top. I have got pearl earrings I could wear to be a “grown up” I suppose. I have a lack of heels. Maybe I should buy new shoes as they’ll always come in handy.
The back is just plain so not s lot going on. I’m happy to blend in this time. I yearn for a midnight blue lace topped fabulous dress and killer heels but I’m neither thin, nor rich enough for this at the moment. Loved the lace top dress posted on the NYC dinner. I’m getting nails done Friday. Colour? Black? Red? Rouge noir to go with the whole 90s edit?!

Just got an Evening bag. And found shoes on eBay too think they’re bit too wedding!

RoseWhiteTips · 15/01/2018 21:45

Classic. I like.

Mulberrysilk · 15/01/2018 23:08

Looks good to me. Black shoes. Pearls. Dark red nails.

Nettletheelf · 15/01/2018 23:59

Rouge noir. Don’t wear a wrap, it will look dated. Also, fake tan and body lotion with a bit of gold/pearlised sheen: that frock is going to highlight your arms and shoulders. It will look stylish and understated, I think.

BringBiscuits · 16/01/2018 13:51

Going against the grain but I'd wear statement tassle earrings to give it a bit of 'now'.
Pearls are very classic so depends what look you're going for.

Hippadippadation · 16/01/2018 16:24

It looks very classic to me. I'd go with it.

Polkadot1974 · 17/01/2018 00:19

Ooh a tassel earring. I like! Have ordered a back up lace topped dress in Debenhams sale but ordered my thin size so doubt it will fit. I’m so pleased you think it’s ok
Glad I didn’t charity it now!

Ive had a wobble and bought another dress. Any good?

It’s a nice fit on shoulders and arms as it’s petite and I’m a shortie but it’s a bit shapeless - maybe Spanx and heels will make it better. Nude tights?
