How did you wear your hair in the '80s?

Just watching Top of the Pops 1985 and having fun looking at the audience and reminiscing.

I recognise so many of the hairstyles eg short at the back, big floppy quiff at the front, curly Liz McDonald perm, spiky on end with tons of gel, short with little tail I put into a plait when it grew, scruffy curls a la Madonna, crazy colour. All opposite to how I have worn it for years ie straight and highlighted. I'm boring now.

Anyone else who was alive in the 80s, do you remember how you wore your hair?

Long bob, either straight or wavy depending if I could be bothered to make an effort. Then I went and had a very expensive perm (I was frightened of the home perm look from the 1970s) and it was fab.

No backlighting or hairstyles amongst me or my friends, we thought that very 1960s .

LouiseBrooks · 13/01/2018 11:26

And then about 1988 I had it cut into a short sleek Bob (wanted to be Miss Brooks of course!).

Wallofglass · 13/01/2018 11:26

Love the photos! So typically 80s including the make up.

Mostly a bob. Then I grew it so I could have a loose perm. My mum's friend said her sister was a trainee hairdresser and would do it for me. So she did. Except the only perming she had ever done was at the local old folks home so I ended up with a full on 'granny perm'. Blush

Ha ha like Henry from Neighbours Grin

I had a big quiff on top and crunchy moussed (probably highly flammable) long hair.

I "went out" with a boy at school who had shaved hair and a long plaited rat's tail at the back. He was so cool. Grin

I've found some more!
Bit of a party animal 😂

I just had to google Henry from neighbours. Perm plus mullet I would say.

Crispy home perm for me. I wanted wet look but it always went crispy.

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 13/01/2018 17:55

Occasionally accessorised with a MASSIVE ribbon bow on a spring clip.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 13/01/2018 23:08

Varying lengths of bobs, often accessorized with a black velvet bow on a clip like @DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv. I blame Sarah Ferguson.

goose1964 · 13/01/2018 23:12

I crimped mine

phoenix1973 · 13/01/2018 23:12

Permed with lots of firm hold gel. It was crispy. 😁

LockedOutOfMN · 13/01/2018 23:16

Lots of side ponytails.

I was born in 1980.

I dreamed that when I grew up I'd have my hair like Kylie's on her album cover. It was the album with I Should Be So Lucky, The Locomotion, Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi, Got To Be Certain, etc. I think it was just entitled Kylie Minogue. Kylie had her hair pushed through a hat band and an off the shoulder black top with a little logo of 3 pairs of gold sunglasses printed on one boob.

Graphista · 13/01/2018 23:16

Scrunchy long perm at school (wasn't allowed short hair) best friend had short spiky style.

After leaving home - Bob with shaved nape of neck - hardly a wild rebellion but my parents were horrified.

Bratsandtwats · 13/01/2018 23:18

Early 80’s it was a short style with massive hair flick a lá the girl in Human League.
Late 80’s it was a Louise Brooks style short bob.

It’s still in a short bob 30 years later. It suits me and never goes out of style.

Loonoonow · 13/01/2018 23:21

Big blonde Farrah Fawcett style perm. Clipped up with a banana clip at work. I loved it. I hope perms come back soon. They were so easy to maintain. I never had a bad hair day back then.

endehors · 13/01/2018 23:21

Similar to a previous poster mine was very long and permed. Spiral perm I think it was called. And yes, lots of gel, the firm hold stuff. I remember people would ask if they could touch curls of others to see how crisp they were. Actually that does sound odd now come to think of it, but that's what we did Grin

endehors · 13/01/2018 23:23

I liked the short spiky hairstyles some of the girls had, a couple of my friends had that style.

Rusty You look really elegant. I wish my 80s photos were like yours!

Tartyflette · 13/01/2018 23:41

Big.
Sprayed. Backcombed with special backcombing comb. More spray.
A bit like this, but quite a bit shorter.
It didn't suit me at all. And I certainly didn't look anything as good Sad

@ScreamingValenta

I chose them carefully!

High half up ponytail with a fringe worn with big white hoop earrings. Crimped all over or moussed into long waves for going out.
