How did you wear your hair in the '80s?

Just watching Top of the Pops 1985 and having fun looking at the audience and reminiscing.

I recognise so many of the hairstyles eg short at the back, big floppy quiff at the front, curly Liz McDonald perm, spiky on end with tons of gel, short with little tail I put into a plait when it grew, scruffy curls a la Madonna, crazy colour. All opposite to how I have worn it for years ie straight and highlighted. I'm boring now.

Anyone else who was alive in the 80s, do you remember how you wore your hair?

Big.

I still do.

MrsPear · 13/01/2018 08:29

I was a kid - born at the beginning - but i was bald then it was a crop to begin with then shoulder length with fringe and the velvet horse shoe thing - what were they called?!

Mum was just in her 20s and all I remember is the long perm.

LizzieSiddal · 13/01/2018 08:31

I had shoulder length loosely permed hair, it was as lovely and really suited me.

If I were braver, I’d have it done again Grin

Wallofglass · 13/01/2018 08:56

I don't know why the perm has never made a comeback!

I went from Bonnie Tyler to Annie Lennox.

The only thing I really regret is Sun-in.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 13/01/2018 09:01

In a massive backcombed mohawk. Shaved off at the sides. My hair was legendary!

Wallofglass · 13/01/2018 09:06

Oh yes I did sun-in. It was bright yellow. Then I had to grow it out for about two years.

The perm IS making a comeback! One of my DD's is a hairdresser and she's had to do several recently, two on guys who wanted the top front bit permed only 🤭...like pubes haha they seemed happy though apparently.

MrsMoastyToasty · 13/01/2018 09:15

I started the 80's with a Purdy haircut (I was always late in following the fashions ), which morphed into a Lady Diana cut with heavily hairsprayed flicks at the sides. I also had it big and curly like Susannah Hoffs from the Bangles. I never tried sun-in though as my hair was near enough jet black.
My mum still has a studio photo of me circa 1982 hanging on the wall of her dining room.

User5trillion · 13/01/2018 09:19

I think it was called a paige boy haircut, shorter and the front and longer at the back. Basically a bob. I really wanted long hair like my friends but I was was at infants school so my mum got to decide. She did some rag it and would then brush it so I ended up looking like I had stuck my fingers in an electrical socket.

alotalotalot · 13/01/2018 09:22

I had a lovely mullet type thing and if I could get a nice flick I was happy.

Fresta · 13/01/2018 09:24

I had a Princess Dianna flick which needed loads of Silvikrin to keep it in place.

IJustLostTheGame · 13/01/2018 09:29

GalactiCat that is AWESOME

KeiraTwiceKnightley · 13/01/2018 09:32

Princess Di flicks but shorter. I am responsible for the depleted ozone layer.

Cocolepew · 13/01/2018 09:34

Oh yes the back combing. Waking up and trying to sort it out before school was great Hmm
I never had the plait at the back but the school bully had an amazing one.
She had, naturally curly, hair to her bum and cut it leaving the longest plait in the school.
She decided to pick on me so I cut it off sitting behind her in science.
I had a pink mohican is the sumner holidays and my gran shut the door on me when we went for our holidays Grin

Flisspaps · 13/01/2018 09:35

Very short at first and then grew it long with a massive fringe. I was born in 1982 though Grin

Alwaysinmyheart · 13/01/2018 10:38

Oh hair in the eighties was fun! In the early eighties I used to crimp my hair and later on I had a lovely curly perm. I also used to use aubergine Crazy Colour on my dark brown hair which made it lovely and shiny but if I got caught in the rain, the colour would run! 😀

Alwaysinmyheart · 13/01/2018 10:47

Oh and I also had dreadlocks when I was 17! I bought some fake hair from an Indian shop and spent a whole day plaiting it into my own hair, it was sooo cool! I was a big Boy George fan and really wanted his hair 😀

insancerre · 13/01/2018 10:51

Black, crimped, backcombed to be very big with lots of hairspray

Before that shaved on the sides and long at the back and spiky in the middle

I started the 80s with long straight hair and finished with very short spiky hair

Wallofglass · 13/01/2018 10:55

It seemed to be so easy to colour and perm your own hair in those days. I even used to cut mine and shave the sides with clippers. Wouldn't dare touch mine these days.

Here’s me at. Boy George concert in 1982! Wish I had more pics from that time but taking photos was much more of a big deal back in the day wasn’t it?

How did you wear your hair in the '80s?
flumpybear · 13/01/2018 11:03

Mid 80'snu had a corkscrew perm - dreadful! Then had a fringe cut donut was really odd looking. A Trainee highlighted my hair which was essentially bleached - awful lol

MrsJayy · 13/01/2018 11:07

A mullet perm think henry from neighbours Blush

Svalberg · 13/01/2018 11:17

I had a body perm & a flicked back fringe in the late 80s, when I got a new passport. That photo stayed with me until nearly 2000! Valuable lesson learned re fashion & passports - it gave the border officials a good laugh though I suppose Blush
