How did you wear your hair in the '80s?

Just watching Top of the Pops 1985 and having fun looking at the audience and reminiscing.

I recognise so many of the hairstyles eg short at the back, big floppy quiff at the front, curly Liz McDonald perm, spiky on end with tons of gel, short with little tail I put into a plait when it grew, scruffy curls a la Madonna, crazy colour. All opposite to how I have worn it for years ie straight and highlighted. I'm boring now.

Anyone else who was alive in the 80s, do you remember how you wore your hair?

*hairdresser had done

I wore my fine wavy hair in a banana clip. Surely they are due a comeback? They lent such length and volume to my ponytail

Yes constantintople - I'd forgotten my banana clip of circa 1986. Definitely due a revival.

Anditstartsagain · 12/01/2018 23:09

I was born in 1986 so pigtails most likely but I remember never being allowed to touch my mums hair in case i messed with her perm I also remember her hair not moving at all 😂 she loved that perm

theconstantinoplegardener · 12/01/2018 23:09

Just discovered that banana clips have come back. Claire's Accessories stock them!

HellToupee · 12/01/2018 23:10

My naturally scruffy curly hair in a bob of varying lengths.

Obvs enhanced by either some sort of material casually tied in it or one of my hats. I miss my collection of hats!!

onlyonaTuesday · 12/01/2018 23:10

Crimped and back combed.

ScreamingValenta · 12/01/2018 23:10

Ooh! Could I get away with one in my 40s, do you think?

ScreamingValenta · 12/01/2018 23:11

^banana clip, that is

AtiaoftheJulii · 12/01/2018 23:25

A sort of Lady Di thing, then later that grew out a bit into more of a bob, with an arch shaved up the back like TyneTeas. And random scraps of fabric tied round my head, natch.

FuckyNellYaBastad · 12/01/2018 23:32

Scrunched and sprayed solid. Does anyone remember NEWS hairspray? If I close my eyes I can still remember the smell

Piratesandpants · 12/01/2018 23:40

I think you need lauers and a perm for a great look with a banana clip (sigh) loved my banana clip

Piratesandpants · 12/01/2018 23:40

Layers

ScreamingValenta · 12/01/2018 23:50

I remember buying the hairspray that was in a plastic squirty bottle rather than an aerosol, at the time when CFC damage first came into the news. My friend and I marched so proudly through Boots with them in our old-style mesh baskets, confident that we were doing our bit for the environment.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/01/2018 00:35

Razzle Dazzle was like an early Claires ( they sold some clothes too but no ear piercing )

I had a banana clip too , then the early scrunchies ( though my DDad said "Why have you got a pair of knickers tied in your hair Hmm )

There were the crimping irons when I was at school (but I didn't have one) I had to tie my long hair in loads of tiny plaits then comb them out with my fingers and swish about a la Kate Bush

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/01/2018 00:45

Gish, I was blonde, I was red, I was jet black. I was Siobahn Fahey with a bit of rag in my hair then I was Madonna with black lace ribbons. I had a black crimped Robert Smith/Siouxie Sioux phase and then for some reason I had a Mohawk. And then I just left it alone and when I met DH in '89 I had a mop of long red curls. Happy days.

southernharp · 13/01/2018 00:47

Bananarama, with changing pieces of fabric or lace tied in. Then a sleek three point bob. That caused a right stir at school amongst the back combing , short round the sides and long at the back crowd. Then a curly bob. Then very short and very blonde. I used to go to the barbers for my cuts. Could carry it off then -tall and slim in my 501s, doc boots, tight tops and charity shop coats. Couldn't carry it off anymore, that's for sure.

mathanxiety · 13/01/2018 00:51

Long with a fringe, messy parting in the middle. I have curly hair and the fringe used to turn into sausages hanging down over my forehead. I never used hairspray or did any backcombing. Even during the 80s I hated the 80s look. I look back and I'm happy I sat it all out.

My daughter is 22 and, apart from a minor dabble with a little bayalage, has had the same long silky straight cut and natural colour all her life. Poor deprived child.

cantthinkofabloodyname · 13/01/2018 01:23

I had the spiky mullet a.k.a. Daphne from Neighbours style, then I desperately wanted a perm, like my friends had. Sadly I wanted a spiral perm but ended up with a perm like my mum's generation would have.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 13/01/2018 01:36

I was at primary school in the 80s and had one of those cone clips that went round the pony tail - I would sleep in foam bendy rollers and then have a side pony with a cone clip or a banana clip. Later on had a Kylie bow, mint green. As a bridesmaid at my auntie's 80s wedding I had a French plait.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 13/01/2018 01:39

Oh and I wasn't allowed crimped hair, my mum thought it was common. I think it had more to do with my auntie's other bridesmaid, who was 2 years older than me, had crimped hair and was very worldly. At the age of 9.

witherwings · 13/01/2018 07:19

What a lovely idea for a thread. So many memories! I missed the 80’s a bit and did all my crazy hair in the 90’s but did have a super short bob so that it was shaved in the back.
My sister though embraced the 80’s with a huge Madonna perm and much lace tied in.

CPtart · 13/01/2018 07:32

Lots of layers, a spiral perm and wet look gel. Had to be wet look. My hair was long and heavy, took hours in the hairdressers. My diffuser was my best friend.
