So is my perfume for old ladies?

ferriswheel · 01/10/2017 08:43

Following on from the other perfume thread I'm now questioning how old-lady my perfume is.

I love wearing Miracle by Lancome.

I'm trying to get myself back after having three small babies under the age of five and going through a traumatic divorce with an abusive partner.

Any other recommendations?

Waves to BIWI! Smile

AdoraBell · 01/10/2017 23:06

Ooh, I missed a page.

Onthehighseas I don't suppose you would know a website that carries Givenchy 111?

Onthehighseas · 01/10/2017 23:11

Excuse my ignorance Adora, but is this the same thing?

Imstyledilemma · 01/10/2017 23:15

All perfume become so called old lady perfumes eventually.
It's ridiculous to think of perfume as being young or old.

Anais anais was originally aimed at young women, so was youth dew. My grandmother said she wore Youth Dew on her wedding day, back when she was18!

I think if you like a perfume and you get lots of compliments on it, then it means that particular perfume suits you and you should carry on wearing it, regardless of what it's called.

BubblegumFactory · 01/10/2017 23:17

Well well well, for the first time ever, I have found people who not only have heard of Laura Biagiotti's Venezia but love it as much as I do!
I wore this perfume all the time in my yoof, and was gutted when it was discontinued. So much so, that I bought about 3 bottles on eBay. I still wear it and love it.
I was excited when it re-appeared a few years back but disappointed when I read reviews saying it was not the same as the original. I suspect it must be close though.
I also think pretty much everyone knows what you mean when you talk about 'old lady' perfume. When I was a teenager, my grandmother had bottles of Charlie and Tweed. They smelt so heavy and musky, not for the trendy young whippersnapper like me who desperately wanted a bottle of Body Shop Dewberry or a White Musk.
It's a fashion thing.

nNina22 · 01/10/2017 23:26

I lovr Youth Dew by Este Lauder ass it reminds me of my mother. I've also got a very old bottle of l'aiment by cote that my mother wore. I can still smell it on her

Floisme · 01/10/2017 23:32

I don't think the elasticated trouser analogy holds up if you'll pardon the pun. These perfumes that posters really do like but they're all of a tizz in case an old lady might like them too.

So what else should one avoid in case old ladies might like it? Obviously I know that comfy shoes are very dangerous indeed but what about ice cream?
Or chocolate biscuits?
Or gin?

I didn't think the thread was about avoiding scents but smells that you would normally associate with an older person that are nice.. For example I would associate youth dew with my nan but wouldn't imagine her or her friends wearing Glam X by Christina Aguilera.

Floisme · 01/10/2017 23:43

Do you think so?

AbsentmindedWoman · 02/10/2017 00:51

My favourite scents are Chanel No 5 and Miss Dior, I don't care if they are old fashioned or not. They are beautiful.

However - I don't know if the Miss Dior I like is a modern version?

Paintbox · 02/10/2017 08:09

I think the points made by flo and others do stand up, why is there a need to avoid a scent (or anything else) if it suggests old lady? I guess because people in the main want to be young and or be seen as young and so wearing something associated with someone older does the opposite. Sadly this perpetuates the cycle, and no one younger will wear scent ( or anything else) which they actually like, because they are afraid of it being an old ladies thing

PerfumeIsAMessage · 02/10/2017 08:13

Absent- no, it won't be. (the Miss Dior) You need to buy Miss Dior Originale. The eleventy billion new perfumes with the "Miss Dior" name are not she, but are being churned out (on a seemingly weekly basis) to the (dare I say) young women market. Be wary of Dior salespeople as well, I have had to be very firm and say "no, that is NOT MD originale" when they've sworn blind one of the dreadful new things is it.

Roma and Venezia are both available all over the place, cheap as chips nowadays- not much changed from the originals. Roma was directly inspired (some may say copied from) Obsession of course, so you could always buy a cheap bottle of that instead. (Obsession is another one though which is so reformulated as to be almost unrecognisable from the sexy skankfest of the mid 80s)

Givenchy III available also - try ebay if you want original non-reformulated Giv III. You can often pick up the 3 bottle miniatures for next to nothing- I got a Giv III/Eau de Giv/Monsieur Giv for £4.99, sealed and pristine.

AgSiopadoireachtAris · 02/10/2017 08:16

So why aren't we all wearing polyester disposable fashion in our late forties then?
We're none of us afraid to embrace better fabrics and cuts. Just wondering out loud.

I hate young young fashion and scent tbh.
Give me a classic any day

PerfumeIsAMessage · 02/10/2017 08:18

PS If someone tells me a perfume is "old lady" then I know I'll love it. Likewise if someone tells me a perfume is a "pink minger" (looking atcha Flowerbomb and your monstrous derivatives) I know to swerve.

AdoraBell · 02/10/2017 08:41

That could be it onthehighseas although the packaging is different.

Thank you for the link.

AdoraBell · 02/10/2017 08:49

Thank you PerfumeIsAMessage, I missed your post. I’ll have a look on eBay.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 02/10/2017 09:00

I find ebay.de and ebay.it are better for old perfumes- you can often pick up some fantastic bargains.

notacooldad · 02/10/2017 09:01

When I've described old lady style and mentioned polyester and the like the old I was referring to was late 80s to mid 90s ( well to death I guess) as that is the style that my Ann's and great aunties wear and therefore the perfume they wear is what I would associate with them.
I wouldn't describe Lancomes 'miracle' as old lady OP!

I've some unopened Anais Anais. Should I open it or gift it forward?

If I was you I would try some on at a department store to see if it suits you, then you can decide if you keep or regift!

So much angst around styles being too old or too young, whether it's clothes , haircuts, perfumes etc.

Why burden yourself with something else too worry about.
The question should be 'do I like it, if yes does it suit me?
That's it!

Floisme · 02/10/2017 09:14

Ag I think you have missed the op's point. She loved the perfume but she was 'questioning' - her word - her choices and asking for other recommendations because she feared the 'old lady'.

Another poster on the same page blushed - blushed I tell you - because she liked it too. Another asked if she should give her perfume away. To be fair, some posters did say it shouldn't matter but then a poster reassured everyone it was ok, that they liked it and they were young. Cue relief all round and everything would have been just fine if those nasty professionally offended types hadn't shown up.

It's one thing to ask for opinions because you've just bought something and you're not sure if you like it, or because you like it but you're worried other people won't. But to love something, really love it but be afraid that the wrong kind of people might like it too; and for everyone to then get all flustered and huffy when questioned about it - well that is pretty comical.

ferrier · 02/10/2017 09:21

4711 - that takes me right back!
Bit disappointed that Estee Lauder Beautiful is described as grannychic though Confused It's my favourite day perfume and I often get compliments for it.
I wouldn't want 'teen' marketed fragrances though - usually too sweet for me. But what's the inbetween?

AdoraBell · 02/10/2017 09:36

Oddly, I found it on Amazon Grin, it didn’t show up before when I’ve searched. And they want less for it than eBay sellers Confused

Paintbox · 02/10/2017 09:37

Flo I think you've explained it very well there

Floisme · 02/10/2017 09:39

Thank you. I will leave you to discuss your favourite perfumes now.

Only1scoop · 02/10/2017 09:45

Op I absolutely love Miracle

I joke it's my old lady perfume too

Always get asked what it is though

Botanicbaby · 02/10/2017 13:26

Well said Floisme you have captured it in a nutshell.

My heart sinks every time I see an 'ageist' or 'sexist' thread title in S&B, or MN generally. If it suits you and you like it just wear it whether its perfume or clothes!
