So is my perfume for old ladies?

ferriswheel · 01/10/2017 08:43

Following on from the other perfume thread I'm now questioning how old-lady my perfume is.

I love wearing Miracle by Lancome.

I'm trying to get myself back after having three small babies under the age of five and going through a traumatic divorce with an abusive partner.

Any other recommendations?

Thank you for your comments Pig (Wilbur being the full username of someone who I think is a completely different MNer, so I contract from last part if name, following your example).

I didn't go looking. It was there, in Active Convos. I am (genuinely) interested in what ^ferriswheel* means by it, and if there can be any way that it's not ageism (none comes to my mind, which is why I asked)

Casual ageism is wrong.

A 'perfume for older ladies' is definitely ageist, as it stereotypes taste as age-related when it so clearly is not.

If it was however intended as way of referring to aldehydes, perhaps wheel could ask for the thread title to be edited?

AuntieStella · 01/10/2017 21:19

"I'm the wrong side of 35"

Which side is that? Could be either.

JanetStWalker · 01/10/2017 21:23

FFS, this place is impossible at times. Do you people nit pick like this in real life too? Must be exhausting living life waiting to be offended by the most benign, casual shit.

Downyonder · 01/10/2017 21:26

What she said ⬆️

LottieDoubtie · 01/10/2017 21:28

Surely 'old lady perfume' is one that puts you in mind of older ladies?

Nothing wrong with that, doesn't imply that said older ladies are inferior in some way, just that their tastes are offer different from someone several generations younger than them.

The tone of your post trojan suggested you were searching rather hard for offence.

Judydreamsofhorses · 01/10/2017 21:28

I think the thread refers to the fact that some perfumes are stereotypically associated with and marketed towards more mature women, trojan, in the same way some are associated with and marketed towards girls/young women. As with everything, it's very much personal taste, but I don't expect many 14 year olds would love Mitsouko, and I can't imagine wearing something "pink" like Miss Dior (the new versions, not the original in the houndstooth box) or La Vie et Belle at my age.

Wilburissomepig · 01/10/2017 21:31

Call me what you like, I'm not fussed, it would be a little silly to be offended by someone using part of a name that I actually chose myself, don't you think? I don't think there's another Wilburissomepig on here but sometimes people on here call me Wilbur, sometimes Pig, sometimes the whole shebang.

Anyway, I'm so tired of seeing someone post what is so 'obviously not in any way an 'ism' of any sort and someone rolling up to try to derail their thread and make it about something that everyone knows it isn't.

FannyWisdom · 01/10/2017 21:34

I can only wear my old lady scents.
New scents smell ok but as they dry I get a whiff of loo cleaner to me.
Tresor, lancome. Organza, givenchy. Chanel no5.
Now they are only stocked in larger stores.
Next step is only available from the special magazine.

Gertiegoolash · 01/10/2017 21:36

Wilburissomepig Venezia used to be my absolute favourite! Where did you find a bottle of it?! I too want to be transported back to 1997!!!

jelliedeel · 01/10/2017 21:37

So.....back to the perfumes.
Is Venezia 2011 the same as the nineties version Wilbur pig? It seems to have a different bottle top too? I am able to get some online and would love to know before I buy.
I don't know if old lady perfumes are seen as such because they have been around for decades (along with their original wearers). Would a new release ever be regarded like this due to it's composition?

squoosh · 01/10/2017 21:37

'perhaps wheel could ask for the thread title to be edited?'

Nah.

squoosh · 01/10/2017 21:38

Tresor I don't like as I accidentally sprayed myself in the eye with it once and flailed around boots like a loon, wailing in agony.

dementedma · 01/10/2017 21:40

Hell, I sometimes splash on 4711 in hot weather. I think thats about as old as it gets...

FabulouslyGlamorousFerret · 01/10/2017 21:40

judydreamsofhorses fab user name, ace song 👍🏻

SukiTheDog · 01/10/2017 21:41

I think you should wear what you love to wear. I tried Miss Dior Originale this weekend and am very tempted. I wore it many years ago and it’s lovely.

I also like Tresor 😉

Am all about Armani Si at the moment. Perfumes last ages for me because it’s not an everyday thing.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/10/2017 21:43

Are you worried someone might smell your perfume and think you're 85?

Exactly.

Trojan makes a very good point.

SureIusedtobetaller · 01/10/2017 21:44

O de Lancome is lovely, is it an "older" fragrance?! And I love the smell of that 4711 cologne too but that's because it actually reminds me of my grandmother.

BIWI · 01/10/2017 21:46

What the fuck is an 'old lady' perfume?!

All those of you trying to justify this statement, just have a think.

What on earth does that mean, beyond a simply offensive, ageist statement.

Please define, and give examples.

squoosh · 01/10/2017 21:48

Tweed - old lady perfume

Tommy Girl - teenage perfume

BIWI · 01/10/2017 21:49

FFS, this place is impossible at times. Do you people nit pick like this in real life too? Must be exhausting living life waiting to be offended by the most benign, casual shit.

I can only assume that you are young/younger then. Just wait until you're deemed 'old' and then tell me it's 'benign, casual shit'.

Why on earth should anyone be treated differently because of their age? Genuine question.

BIWI · 01/10/2017 21:50

But what if I, at my advanced age (clearly Hmm) like to wear Tommy Girl?

squoosh · 01/10/2017 21:51

I think that would be allowed. I'll need to check the perfume bylaws though...

LottieDoubtie · 01/10/2017 21:51

Er people have and it's totally reasonable.

'Reminds me of my grandmother'

'Marketed at young girls/more mature women'

Simply mentioning age and stating facts about target markets is not offensive.

No one is saying that you absolutely cannot wear a perfume not stereotypically associated with your own demographic.

In fact, of you read the thread it's the actual opposite in the main.

If you love it: wear it.

BIWI · 01/10/2017 21:51
Grin
CathyMedici · 01/10/2017 21:56

Op is not being ageism ffs! Surely we know what she means?

Clearly we don't.
