Whiffy armpit update

A brief new thread, just so anybody interested (I still can't believe how many of you were nice enough to post with advice!!) doesn't have to trawl through.

Staggeringly, it seems as if a mere switch to SOAP has pretty much done the trick Shock

I've not even broken out the new deodorant yet because I've washed with soap these past two mornings and even with my old deodorant I am fresher at 7.30pm than I was at 9.30am that morning I posted.

Only change - soap instead of shower gel.

I can't believe I have let my lovely tops get whiffy all these years when it was a simple a solution as that!!!

I will def try the new deodorants (Sure is my first one to try out) as the problem isn't TOTALLY solved (about 80% improved, though) and I've had relatively non-busy/running aorund days, so I would want a strong, reliable deodorant for a busy or warm day.

But really, for any other sufferers, I had to start a new thread just to say SOAP SOAP SOAP.

What the hell is (or is not) IN shower gel, that it does such a crap job?

Massive thanks again to everyone.

Yours un-whiffily Grin
Jessicake

On a cheapo note, Asda do an unscented soap with extra moisturisers labelled for sensitive skin. It's brilliant and costs just over £1 for 4 bars. I like it because I react to many perfumes in soap and shower gel (and to the SLS in shower gel - why do you use it, Simple?) and prefer to use a dab of proper (expensive!) perfume instead.

Waitrose essential bars are great and perfect for the face too.

Greenbucket · 17/09/2017 08:52

Love waitrose essential chamomile soap

Beautifullymixed · 17/09/2017 08:59

Lonicera the black African soap I linked to earlier, smells sort of pine fresh, woodlandly, and ultra clean. It's not the sort of smell I thought I'd go for (as I'm a floral fan), but the creamy lather, and clean, fresh feeling when you use it, it really is fab.

The only cons are that it runs out quite quickly, and makes a mess.
I had to buy a black soap dish for it, and it needs to dry out between uses, or it will just disintegrate, but the softness makes for lots of lather and bubbles, which I like.

My teenage ds smells scrumptious after a morning shower with the soap, and his fresh shirt (washed with bio powder at 60°).
No mustiness, and he even still smells fresh after school!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 17/09/2017 09:05

I switched to soap a while ago because I'm fed up with all the plastic tubes and soap usually comes in a nice paper wrapping.

LadyPenelope68 · 17/09/2017 09:05

Pears soap is the absolute best! No shower gels in this house anymore over the last couple of years and no more sweaty smelling teenagers!

Ktown · 17/09/2017 09:07

Greenbucket: agree the chamomile is the best and isn't too strongly perfumed.

Tantpoke · 17/09/2017 09:33

This definitely is a lightbulb moment, now where to keep a bar of soap in my shower? Confused

Funnily enough I did swap to soap for a while last year and had to lean out of the shower to get it from the sink, and on reflection my deodorant always worked better then.
I went back to shower gel for convenience but sometimes I do feel like it doesn't wash my armpits properly, and did I change back to soap like an intelligent person, no Blush

treaclesoda · 17/09/2017 09:36

Sainsbury's do a basics soap for something like 30p that smells lovely and lathers nicely. It smells a bit like Dove but without the greasy residue that Dove leaves behind.

woodhill · 17/09/2017 09:51

I always have soap in a dish and liquid soap at my sinks.

LadyPenelope68 · 17/09/2017 10:10

Soap dish like this means you never have soggy, slimed soap as it dries out easily.

As one or two others have asked.....is liquid soap any good?
I absolutely hate the feel of a slimey soap bar, almost to the point of a phobia, which is why I used shower gel.
So can I use liquid soap, or can anyone recommend a soap bar that doesn't feel slimey?

MrsSchadenfreude · 17/09/2017 11:15

Yes, use liquid soap - the French liquid savon de Marseille, which you can buy cheaply in TK Maxx and not the "handwash" that is in the supermarket or Boots.

PurplePillowCase · 17/09/2017 11:18

or a washing up liquid.
weirdly that's not as bad as liquid hand soap on my eczema.

FiveBoys · 17/09/2017 11:21

Thats the soap dish I have and I never have soggy soap.

Ollivander84 · 17/09/2017 11:27

Dr Bronner liquid soap is good and cheap

LoveVelo · 17/09/2017 11:40

Another soap convert here!
Usually like Nivea soap but 4711 and Roger & Gallet Jean-Marie Farina if feeling a bit decadent as love cologne type fragrances.
Just back from Olu Deniz in Turkey and stocked up at Soap Lady which is highly recommended, she is also online now. (soapladyoludeniz.com/) The bars are 11TL, which is about £2.30. I found out about her through Trip Adviser.
Thanks for the thread JessiCake, great to hear of the recommendations - Amazon cart filling up nicely!

LadyPenelope68 · 17/09/2017 11:54

Pears soap doesn't go slimey, particularly if you dab it in a flannel after you use it then leave it to dry. I also have a bit of a yuck thing about skinny soap and use Pears happily.

LadyPenelope68 · 17/09/2017 11:55

Haha slimey soap, not skinny soap! Grin

HappenstanceMarmite · 17/09/2017 15:19

I've been using Sanex non perfumed, non this, that or the other. With real soap bars, is there not a danger of Thrush?! 😱

HappenstanceMarmite · 17/09/2017 15:50

*Sanex Shower Gel

PurplePillowCase · 17/09/2017 15:50

danger of thrush? no.
if you get red irritated skin after washing it's probably because you didn't rinse if off. plus soap (and gels, shampoos should only be used on the outer bits and not on the sensitive inner labia etc.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 17/09/2017 16:03

Have bought organic oatmeal soap in Tesco to try this! Also intrigued by the idea that liquid washing stuff isn't as good as soap powder, I have already swapped to powder for the dishwasher as the tab things weren't dissolving properly, it's a half size one so I assumed the tabs were too big. It's getting harder to find though, in the big Tesco near me there is only one type I can buy, everything else is liquid tabs or pressed powder tablets.

LoniceraJaponica · 17/09/2017 16:13

"With real soap bars, is there not a danger of Thrush?!"

Nope. I would have though less than with shower gel.

MaryLennox are you sure the advice isn't for your washine machine, not your dishwasher? I only use dishwasher tablets in my dishwasher and have never had a problem.

Laundry liquid is horrible stuff.
