Also, please, some flat black ankle boot recs?

MrsW, are you bidding farewell to dd3 this w/e?

MsMartini · 17/09/2017 21:02

Me too MrsS - and we all like going there. They cut and fitted a new tent pole for an elderly tent that wasn't even from there - for free! And if you have a nice lie down on the fishing loungers they ignore you

addle · 17/09/2017 21:43

Shame about the walking boots Mrs S. I bragged to DH that I'd had my decathlon walking sandals for decades when we were in Vigo. They fell apart approx. 12 hours later but they had done v good service.Love Decathlon. Bit like hardware stores, always find something useful I didn't know existed.

Mrs W - if dropping off dd3, hope it's going well.

DH and I sitting over a drink and thinking about DS ... who may or may not be attending the welcome party in his halls. DH has lost his match of the day companion so is particularly wistful.

MrsWobble3 · 18/09/2017 06:55

Thanks for asking about dd3 - as she's gone over the border she had an early start to term so last weekend was the Great Trek North. Lectures begin 9am today and I think she is looking forward to starting work - she's been at a bit of a loose end during Freshers and whilst she has enjoyed it the constant socialising with new people is not her natural milieu and probably harder work than work.

The Circle of Life continues in the Wobble house though - this weekend was spent assisting dd1 with grad scheme applications. I assume at some point they won't want our help - but I don't think I'I quite ready for that yet even if they are.

We also contribute to the financial success of Decathalon - 3 x DoE plus holidays plus gym/sports kit has all been kitted out there.

MsMartini · 18/09/2017 08:42

Good luck to dd3, MrsW! My dd didn't liked freshers at all.

I dunno - maybe job applications, like important doctors' appointments, something sensible adults benefit from help/another pair of eyes or ears with too - seems sometimes a sign of maturity?

motherinferior · 18/09/2017 10:34

I've just been on a press weekend and found socialising a Bit Stressful, it must be said. I am v sociable but usually pick the people I'm out with!

hattymattie · 18/09/2017 11:30

SmileMrs W "the great trek north" sounds like something from Game of Thrones.

Re - grad scheme apps - I found mine had no idea how to complete applications - it really is something they could usefully be taught. I don't know how those whose parents cannot help them manage.

MI - I hate and am basically crap at small talk.

MsMartini · 18/09/2017 14:50

I find small talk really dull too, especially these days when I don't drink as much. I like either proper conversations about proper stuff (like wot we have Smile), or playing a game or a quiz or sport or walking or something. Not that interested holidays of people I don't know, or whatever curmudgeonly old git.

Blackduck · 18/09/2017 20:07

I hated freshers too - I am an introvert so too much socialising saps me...

Have just brained self on sloping bedroom ceiling.... Ouch.

bigTillyMint · 18/09/2017 20:19

I loved Freshers (though it was called Intro week at mine, back in the day!) And surprise, surprise, DD seems to be enjoying it too Grin

Cremolafoam · 19/09/2017 07:46

I was a wild socialiser back in uni days. Now not so much. As MsM says, I'm not that fascinated by other people's hols. I always struggle in the hairdressers with chit chat.
Glad to hear dd3 got a good send off Mrs W. have a completely empty house now ?

Rosenspants · 19/09/2017 08:24

I'm good at small talk but I find it exhausting, and if standing, my knees start to ache! I think a lot of new students tire of Freshers after a bit and want to get onto a normal timetable. I missed a lot of mine owing to my Parents insisting I came home for the religious festivals. I have always carried a huge chip on my shoulder because of it.

Good luck to DD3, MrsW!

I have bought a couple of items from Biba at HoF....attracted by the slightly hippyish, eccentric vibe. I am not keen that they are polyester but they actually fit quite well!

brilliant for covering up stomach roll

rarely wear anything with gold detail but love the sleeves

MrsWobble3 · 19/09/2017 08:33

Dd3's uni start has coincided with her sisters' finishes so the house is actually fuller/noisier/messier than last year when they were all away at uni/school. It's different though - they are much more independent so I definitely feel I have graduated from the 'mummy drudge' role.

And they are good company so I'm enjoying the change. I'm sure we'll get fed up with each other at some point but for now life is fun.

motherinferior · 19/09/2017 08:37

Oh hurrah, MrsW.

I must sling words into the page.

MrsSchadenfreude · 19/09/2017 12:03

In S @ B news, I have ordered that no blow dry stuff and a very expensive eyeliner from Feelunique.

IDismyname · 20/09/2017 07:34

Now that I've finished my 2 days of college this week, I'm back into organising DSs trip to the Far West.

We did a mammoth shop online from Wilkos which I picked up last weekend.

I had a hilarious convo last week with a bunch of ex school mums (about half of whom had sons starting their second year at uni) about the colour of bed linen you should give them. I was eyeing up the 'denim' range, but was told in no uncertain terms to 'Go for grey'!

URGH.

I have also bought a clothes airer. Thought it would be useful for drying biking kit that can't be tumble dried. (It would melt)

The file paper and pencil cases are packed up, and all (I think) we now need to add to the list is clothing, food and bike bits.

Did you food shop when you got there? We'll be in the middle of a large city, on a Saturday afternoon, and I'll have DH with me who visibly recoils when food shopping is mentioned. I can't work out what to do...

We are miles from a Decathlon. Only been once, but remember its ability to empty my wallet with ease.

Rosen like the slightly sparkling jumper, but can't think I'd be doing much in those sleeves, unless I was holding a glass of champagne. I'd forgotten about Biba clothing. I'm off to check out their other stuff.

Great convo about Hotter shoes going on elsewhere on S&B

motherinferior · 20/09/2017 07:56

I saw that thread. I'm eyeing up some Hotter ankle biker boots...

BeachysFlipFlops · 20/09/2017 07:57

Shop when you get there, I think. I would move stuff in, make up bed, check communal kitchen for availability of cupboards and fridge space, then shop.... we bought lots of freezer bags and split packs of sausages etc for the freezer.....

Send dh off on a 'job', sussing distance from halls to library, buying suitable bike lock etc etc Smile

bigTillyMint · 20/09/2017 08:53

Cloud, we just took some pasta and sauces, rice and a few other store-cupboard things. Left it to her to sort out buying fresh food, paper, etc! There were hordes of teens wandering about with clothes airers when we got there Grin

motherinferior · 20/09/2017 10:19

Friend of mine actually did all the bedding etc shop when they got there.

MsMartini · 20/09/2017 10:43

Cloud, we did the same as BTM - both times with ours they didn't want us to stay long enough for a food shop as they wanted to start getting to know flatmates and were not thinking about egg requirements! - took some basics with them. Also, they probably don't know what they will eat in first few days as depends what events etc they go to. On subsequent visits, we'd sometimes get some food in. Yes to clothes airers!

MsMartini · 20/09/2017 10:50

Oooh which ones, MI?

I want to buy myself new boots for my mother to give me for my birthday (not imminent) - am thinking Hotter, Moshulu, Fly....any thoughts? Have stumpy calves, sturdy legs, skirts mostly to knee or a bit above. Or to go with jeans.

motherinferior · 20/09/2017 11:00

these

MsMartini · 20/09/2017 11:01

Do it! Really nice with jeans?

MrsWobble3 · 20/09/2017 11:22

Cloud, we did a supermarket trip on arrival with the dds. It's worth checking storage capacity though. Dd2's first year self catering I sent her with a large pack of toilet rolls - as did the mother of every one of her 4 housemates. Those initial supplies lasted them through the next year as well!
