Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEW ADDITIONS since last thread:

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

AUGUST 2017: Sunscreen is pretty much non-negotiable at the moment (not that it’s ever not Wink), RL bumps have been met in the road for some, unfortunately. Grief sucks but we do our best to offer a bit of comfort even if it is just something as inane as skincare chat Smile. Some of us are lucky enough to be nerding out in French pharmacies whilst pretending to do that holiday thing, the Shelf Porn Off is still on…

I can't believe we're on thread 9 Shock

Technically the grey isn't facing anything so I should be ok Grin no windows in the hallway

My living room and kitchen is done in polished pebble which I was hoping would be darker, it's nice but I wanted a darker grey hence the chic shadow for the hall

botemp · 23/08/2017 22:38

I really need to turn in now, lacking but if you can lay out your routine and describe your skin type/condition and issues like Milford has upthread than it's probably easier to advise and I'll take a look tomorrow.

Hmm yes, that muted pebble is definitely more timid, Olli. It's a bit of a chameleon though, looks very light blue in some pics, light greenish in others and completely lilac in some Confused. It's about as rogue as grey gets.

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 23/08/2017 22:44

Yes it definitely is! It's almost white grey in the living room, and a definite hint of blue in the kitchen - strange as it's all open plan. I quite like how it changes though. But the hallway I have set on a definite grey (to tone with my white ikea unit)

Tantpoke · 23/08/2017 22:56

Because I've got a bit of a tan my skin looks great as it blends in perfectly with my rosy cheeks, however I'm too scared to use many products in case I take that lovely layer of tan off.

So I'm currently just applying TO Vit C 23% and a squirt of Rodial dragons blood hyaluronic acid (I just love this stuff) it came with an M&S summer box (I bought 4 last year or the year before)

I'm wondering would the TO azaelic acid strip my skin?
The TO buffet seems to bring me out in small pimples, The Hylamide used to do the same although it still works at hydrating my skin.

I have however just received in the post my gorgeous Niod box set from QVC, I forgot I pre ordered it a while ago. Has anyone ever used the mastic must? It says a beneficial but unnecessary step is to blow dry your face after use for 15 seconds sounds scary Confused

I'm sorry I'm so out of the loop! Can't seem to focus on anything much st the moment.

Just popped into say my local chemist says they are not aware of TF being discontinued Shock and there it was on their shelf!!! Have 3 bottles now as back up Grin It's part of a biggish chain here in Ireland, so I'd expect them to be aware. Maybe? Hopefully!!

Otherwise my new cleansers are going a treat. I've the niod ester and ren evercalm gel; I do find I have to rinse before flanneling or I get tiny reactive forehead spots. Hmm but all the nasty lumpy spots under my jaw are gone Smile

Ollivander84 · 24/08/2017 02:08

Two things I have been using and liked this month and would repurchase

Yes to cucumbers calming moisturiser. Pump bottle, smells of cucumbers, doesn't make me break out and is lightweight. Nice over a serum. Cheap and does what it says!

Sports FX recovery primer. Came in a beauty box (full size bottle), and is meant to have a cooling effect. It does, and it doesn't feel silicone like. V lightweight and easy to apply, no rolling or peeling. Foundation applies well over it

JDSTER · 24/08/2017 15:58

Hi Tant yep I've got NIOD mastic mud. It's a nice mask actually. It sort of makes a satisfying bubbling noise as you squeeze it out of the tube. I've tried the blow dry of the face thing HmmGrin ......

yongnian · 24/08/2017 16:52

milford is the skin around your eyes just dry or is it also sore and/or itchy or in some way irritated?

yongnian · 24/08/2017 16:58

And olli have you encountered Huda Beauty at all? (The palettes look vaguely familiar from one of your posts, but could be making that up)

Ollivander84 · 24/08/2017 18:14

I have but haven't tried Huda

botemp · 24/08/2017 18:32

Are we now turning this into torture Olli with things for her wishlist now Grin saw Viseart have come up with a new warm mattes palette

userallusedup · 24/08/2017 18:32

Thanks for mentioning the Eucerin Bo I've got a 5% urea body moisturiser from them but it's quite sticky and takes a while to absorb, hopefully the face one will do the trick for my neck & chest.

I like the look of that NIOD kit Tant I'm a sucker for a nice box of skin care goodies, I'm sitting in my hands though as have just ordered:

Hand chemistry pro-repair and retinoil (might risk trying that on my neck and chest as reviews say it's suitable for face and body).
Eucerin 5% urea face moisturiser
Cicaplast pro recovery balm (meant to be good for using after peels, so thought I'd use it if I get peely after TO 1% ret again)

Not skincare but also just ordered the Tarte Make Believe eye shadow palette which has just landed on QVC.

Ollivander84 · 24/08/2017 18:43

botemp AngrySadGrin
I've ordered LRP makeup remover milk as had run out and some eyebrow gel. Very restrained

mintmagnummm · 24/08/2017 19:53

Anyone know an eye cream for dehydration, fine lines and dark circles??

mintmagnummm · 24/08/2017 19:59

I'm currently trialling a new day and night cream and will report back in a few weeks if using, if anyone cares? Lol

Tantpoke · 24/08/2017 20:34

JD im really looking forward to using the mask now

user I've used the copper stuff and MMHC before which I liked but it's quite pricey so when it was on offer at QVC I just couldn't resist, it's gone up now to more than double the price.

I don't want to use any of it yet because once opened it only last 6 months and winter is going to be dedicated to retinoids, acids and general hardcore skincare I've avoided during the summer months.

I need to plan my routine properly, it's very basic right now as it's summer. But my skin will soon go to pot once I'm back at work, the kids are back at school, the sun disappears and I'm drinking more booze and eating crap food so I don't pass out Grin from exhaustion.

EnidButton · 25/08/2017 00:30

bo I really love All White. Most perfect white white I've ever found. Zero undertones.
Love the dressing table pics. There's something special about dressing tables and dressing rooms. Such a feminine thing. Wonder if Lisa Eldridge mentions dressing tables in her book? I'll check tomorrow. Haven't read it all yet. (Excellent book btw, for anyone interested in the history of make up. It's fascinating. www.amazon.co.uk/Face-Paint-Makeup-Lisa-Eldridge/dp/1419717960?tag=mumsnetforum-21 )

I haven't eaten very healthily lately and my skin has cleared up. Probably no connection but there you go. The weight I lost a couple of weeks ago is back and I look better for it. My too long fringe has settled down into something that looks intentional. (Have found a hair salon I'm going to try though.) And the best season for clothes is here and I'm finding a lot of things I want to buy. Hallelujah.

Ooh and the A/W make up palettes and Christmas stuff will be everywhere soon Olli. You'll have to start another list.

Arket looks very interesting. Hadn't heard of it before you said bo. Their website isn't live here yet but could be promising.

I am rambling, sorry. Went out for dinner and had a huge brownie with chocolate sauce earlier so blame the sugar.

EnidButton · 25/08/2017 00:30

What eyebrow gel do you use Olli my No7 one is looking a bit murky so time for a new one.

Ollivander84 · 25/08/2017 00:41

w7or rimmel. I do like the benefit gimme brow though. Gone with Barry M this time as an experiment!

botemp · 25/08/2017 10:40

Ooh, that Tarte Palette looks very pretty, user. I can finally use the Envy emoji without altering its meaning Grin

I keep meaning to get LE's book, not usually into 'celebrity' beauty books that can be a bit vacuous or a compilation of columns you've already read, but it really looked like she put a lot of research and effort into that one. I'd be curious about the history of it as well, it's a very Old Hollywood thing in my mind, women had dressers before of course but nothing as elaborate as how it's portrayed in those films and photographs. Not that wearing things like perfume, makeup, etc. was very common either but there must be some correlation. It is sort of the female equivalent of one of those very masculine heavy desks in a way, women 'owning' space within the home that isn't the kitchen is interesting, I'm off on a tangent... I do remember it being a bit more of a thing when I was younger (whereas now it seems more a focus on storage and dedicated rooms?), especially in my teens we all wanted the whole mirror and light bulb set up to be like proper adults.

Yes, all the new stuff for A/W appears to be dropping everywhere all at once. I'll miss the bronzer though, may just have to go looking for something that does similar complexion wise without reading as a traditional bronzer, thinking a cream or gel may work. Maybe that Chanel one if used underneath something but it always looks so orange to me, anyone use that, I know it's a bit of a cult product?

Yes, also am liking the A/W fashion offerings much better, having a bit of a trouser obsession lately. Apols, the Arket stuff was just in a preview mode that not everyone could access (didn't realise) but it's opening in London today so think should be accessible to all now.

mint I've seen people recommend Kiehl's Avocado Eye Cream and also Hylamide SubQ Eyes, which is on offer at Boots atm Smile.

mintmagnummm · 25/08/2017 12:04

Thanks bagel I looked at the kiehls one yesterday but I think it will be a bit rich for me (better for dryness rather than dehydration) and unfortunately the subq eyes irritated me :-(

JDSTER · 25/08/2017 16:18

Tant same as you I've used NIOD copper and HA and have some unopened that I got in a set a bit like yours. I also need to get back on the retinoid once I'm back from holiday. I think I might have asked this before but how are you finding azelaic? I've got some but not tried yet.

My skin seems ok, despite two weeks of a slightly iffy skin care regime-cleansing with miceller then a decleor wash off cleanser at night followed by EL night repair (sample sized bottle I had hanging around). Using TO Vit C in the morning and LRP SPF.

mint have you tried any dermalogica eye cream? I know you like their cleanser.

Enid I hope you like your new hairdresser!

botemp · 25/08/2017 16:28

I've had dreadful experiences with the Dermalogica eye creams, but that's just me I'm sure.

You could consider the Bioderma Sensibio Eye Gel (or named something along those lines). Most eye creams don't really tackle dehydration as it can cause puffiness along with the heavy occlusive quality of eye creams. A gel or serum may be a better fit in that sense. Can't tell you the INCI from memory, there may be dimeticone in it.
