Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEW ADDITIONS since last thread:

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

AUGUST 2017: Sunscreen is pretty much non-negotiable at the moment (not that it’s ever not Wink), RL bumps have been met in the road for some, unfortunately. Grief sucks but we do our best to offer a bit of comfort even if it is just something as inane as skincare chat Smile. Some of us are lucky enough to be nerding out in French pharmacies whilst pretending to do that holiday thing, the Shelf Porn Off is still on…

I can't believe we're on thread 9 Shock

JDSTER yes I've tried dermalogica eye creams, I actually quite liked their total eye care but it's £££ and although I liked it I didn't think the results warranted the price of it. Thanks bo I'll check out the bioderma one

Tantpoke · 25/08/2017 17:51

JD I really like TO azaelic acid, it seems to work for me. Takes down my redness and doesn't cause any reaction. Although I haven't touched it for a couple of weeks or so.

Today Ive just got on TO niacimide and LRP toleraine fluide.
Yesterday I wore TO Vit C 23% and TO Natural moisturing with HA.

Olli I suddenly realised I needed more ankle boots and remembered the lovely ones you bought (although the heel is a bit high for me) anyway they sold out but I bought the boots they have left in the sale in a wine colour with a lower heel so I'm happy, although sadly they weren't as bargainous as yours.

Bo lovely Bo what can I say I've just spent a small fortune on clothes from websites you recommended on the Arket post that I thought I'd casually browse till I realised they actually had loads of stuff in the sale that are just up my street. I've gone online shopping crazy although I didn't actually find anything I wanted on the Arket site itself.

so fingers crossed some of it fits

Ollivander84 · 25/08/2017 17:57

Yay! I was eyeing up the other colours Blush
They're higher than I usually wear every day but I'm amazed how comfy they are

EnidButton · 25/08/2017 18:10

Thanks JD

bo Can you remember the name of the drag artist on YouTube? I remember really enjoying that video you linked to ages ago. I should subscribe to him.

JDSTER · 25/08/2017 18:45

mint I think I've got a sample of deramogica eye cream at home (although I can't remember which one) I'll have a look when I'm back but you're welcome to it if you think it's any good.
tant have you stocked ul on LRP toleriane? I think I've got at least half a dozen bottles although I don't find it lasts long. I don't think TO niacinamide does much for my skin so I won't repurchase when it's finished.

botemp · 25/08/2017 19:37

Oh dear Tant, how much damage did I do Grin Can't remember reccing other shops on there though, what did you buy?

Kimberly Clark, Enid. Can't link as on phone and it keeps prompting the app to open but the tutorial for the inserts is one of his/her most recent videos.

Ah yes, the quest for the perfect bronzer...not too glittery, not too orangey, not too....well it's a long list.
I've always liked them but gasp currently don't have one..
Have we had this conversation before....? Anyway, lets have it again! I'm hanging on to the remnants of a tan and steadfastly refusing to admit autumn could be near....
So, dear colleagues, which bronzers float your boats??

botemp · 25/08/2017 20:12

Has it been earlier in the reason I would be seriously considering the Sisley one. It has this lovely gel like texture but is still a powder that is extremely flattering despite containing the detested sparkles. It really needs a good tan to go with it -has that rich lady 'we summer in xyz' endless tan feel to it- and whilst I've coloured a bit (it's inevitable despite diligent SPF use) it would probably look off as soon as the sun is gone. For my current woes of replacing my nearly finished Charlotte Tilbury beach stick beyond Chanel I'm also contemplating the Sensai bronzing gel (I think it's marketed to men Confused). I just want something light and undetectable to wear as a base to layer under powder or nothing at all to give a bit of healthy sun kissed glow that isn't obvious. Moon on a stick basically Grin

OP posts:
EnidButton · 25/08/2017 20:38

Oh yes bo like the loo roll makers! Grin I'll do a search for him now.

yongnian · 25/08/2017 20:40

Haha yeah but of course moonbronzer-on-a-stick!!!
Has your Charlotte tilbury been discontinued or something?
What about going old-school i.e. Geurlain?
I've been enjoying this picture of various bronzers in Huda Kattan's After Dark routine on Into The Gloss, but maddeningly, it doesn't say what any of them are....
intothegloss.com/2017/08/huda-kattan-makeup-routine/

EnidButton · 25/08/2017 20:41

I'm a bronzer free zone but I had a sample of a powder one from Guerlain which seemed to fit your criteria Yong. Zero glitter or shimmer, pigmented, felt very soft and like it'd be easy to blend. No idea about shade range or price but might be worth a look. Although I'm probably the last person who should be advising on bronzers. Grin

MilfordFound · 25/08/2017 20:58

The hadalabo premium lotion arrived yesterday and the Cosrx snail cream today.

Used the snail cream for the first time after double cleansing and BHA. er... I think it's my favourite thing ever! I'm not sure what wizardry is happening, but it melted into my skin and has left it soft and supple and not oily and not dry (apart from the dark circles). I can't stop touching my face!

@botemps Kiehls Creamy Eye Treatment is about £20 for 14g or over £30 for 28g. Not a huge amount and I would probably stretch to that for a really great product but it wouldn't be my first choice for tackling the under eye dehydration.

@yongian Nope no irritation under my eyes, just dehydrated and crepey. So much so that I don't wear foundation or concealer over my dark circles because it accentuates the wrinkles. So I put my foundation on all over my face except the dark circle area. Makes me look stupidly tired, not the look I'm going for!

Ohh I like the talk of make up storage. I keep mine in a mini set of drawers from Ikea
Moppe
I used a dark woodstain and turned the drawers round (so the little pull gaps at the top are facing in) and added drawer knobs. Lined with felt. I've also got some mini plastic crates with lids that clip down. My rampaging toddler hasn't yet figured out how to open the crates so I might be switching the stuff out the drawers into crates in the near future.

I'm due to move house soon if my house purchase ever goes through. Our bathroom is currently downstairs off the kitchen, new house has lovely bathroom upstairs. I'm SO looking forward to having an upstairs bathroom again. My products are stored in a tiny cabinet in the downstairs bathroom as it's easier to do my face down there as no sink upstairs. Can't wait to be able to wash my face and wander into the bedroom to do the rest Smile I'll need new storage in the bedroom for it all...

Anyone tried Rapid Lash or something similar? Does it really work? My lashes are a good length but not many of them and can look a bit sparse some times.

mintmagnummm · 25/08/2017 21:11

JDSTER Thank you that's really lovely of you x

Tantpoke · 25/08/2017 21:26

JD I did stock up with 3 a while ago (which I thought was extravagant) (clearly not) but I should get some more really. Which I will do right now before it all disappears

Olli I got these as they're the only ones left but do have a low heel plus i bought a random dress in the sale.

Bo I was suckered in by weekender and Monki the former had tons of basics in that I needed -wanted- Grin

Hmm there is a Korean makeup brand called Moonshot, perhaps they do bronzer on a stick Grin

< Do you mean this pic, yong? From top to bottom, I think the heart is TooFaced, the square compact is Victoria Beckham for EL should probably go have a look at that (it looks like Tom Ford too but I think it's VB), the NUDE is by Dior should probably have a look at that too and the bottom terracotta one is Guerlain. I like Guerlain a lot, especially since they have so much choice in colours and finishes but they're very heavily fragranced so I've never dared risk it.

No, the CT isn't terrible, I kind of like it but I'm boycotting the brand both on the basis of cost for what it is (in Europe it's heavily overpriced in comparison to the direct competition, eg. Chanel and Dior come in cheaper most of the time) and I hate the way they conduct themselves on SM using influencers and actively pursuing them not to disclose paid relationships, etc. The latter is more rumour where certain patterns are pointed out that leaves little to doubt it as anything but true but it's still idle gossip in the end. I can't really keep up with all that beauty gossip, I can just about manage to remember some indie US brand dressed up as a Nazi for Halloween, can't remember if it was Too Faced or Tarte but their owner was being a massive arse on twitter as well I believe, and Z-Palettes are now persona non grata but I have no idea why, something involving a hot plate I believe Confused.

I do have two other powder bronzers I like, one from Givenchy which is one of those quad ones so it's quite versatile. They've recently reformulated though so won't be able to RP as it's a bit heavier now (nice for if you're a bit more mature and need something to smooth over but it doesn't feel as nice to me) and I still have a bit of the now discontinued Aerin bronzer which is perfect for paler times but I'm rationing accordingly.

No longer on phone so can easily link now since we're still on makeup storage talk, so courtesy of the Loo Roll Queen Grin:

Weekender Grin, they really should change their name to that, for whatever reason Weekday always morphs into something else with me. I like them for basics t-shirts, jeans, sweaters, dresses, the odd skirt or shirt. I should probably have sale browse too as everything is probably dead cheap now, I usually end up ordering twenty pieces to get to the free shipping threshold and am always amazed at the bounty that arrives. Most of it gets sent back, strangely enough, the quirky impulse buys usually end up surprising me the most.

Tantpoke · 25/08/2017 21:48

yong the bronzer I use practically everyday is from Superdrug by makeup revolution and called ultra bronze. I love it because it's matte and a great shade for me.

Before that I used hoola then Dallas by benefit for years.

There is a matte one by bourjois I'd probably try but the one I would buy if I was feeling generous is the Chanel one that people rave about called Soleil Tan.

Tantpoke · 25/08/2017 21:55

Bo Grin hee hee oops yes weekday

I bought so many items, also bizarrely quite a few men's long sleeve t shirts and jumpers in the sale and a men's Trenchcoat (all for me) which were dirt cheap and a bit quirky (the men's sales stuff was quite girly i.e. had a lot of pink in it.

Also dresses and women's clothes. I can't even remember now.
I think the returns policy is easy and free which is why I went for it.

EnidButton · 25/08/2017 22:36

Milford I have a set of those drawers with craft inks and ink stamps in them. I just painted them white but your revamp of them sounds wonderful. They're very versatile.

I use Rapidlash. It definitely works. People have asked if I have lash extensions and I can tell they're also thicker and seem darker. It takes a few weeks to make any difference at first, (about 5-6 wks I seem to remember), and after that it's a maintenance thing. But you do have to keep using it. It basically works by prolonging the life of your lashes so they grow to their full length and stick around rather than dropping out as they should. So if you stop they will fall out (Not all at once, you don't go bald) and your lashes go back to their usual state. So it can be costly. Also they reach a point where they don't lie quite as nicely as they should do you do really need a break from it now and then.

So it does definitely work and the results have been impressive for me personally. But you need patience and to know that you'll need to keep buying it every couple of months, if you want your lashes long all the time.

yongnian · 25/08/2017 23:05

Hmm enid that sounds promising...
Yes bo that is indeed the pic and who needs precise editorial when we can play name-that-bronzer? Grin. Full points! I remember now you said about your one-woman CT boycott...
tant ultrabronze sounds good...but now you've mentioned Chanel....sigh bo is this the one you mentioned up thread?
See, formulation is another issue isn't it...I like the big fat kabuki brush swirl for a bronzer but on the other hand, unless a powder is somehow not totally matte in texture, these days I'm finding it too dry...so a sheeny powder...but on the other, other hand, I love me a cream blush...so it would have to be a sheeny-powder-to-cream formulation that probably doesn't exist yet and likely never would because it defies the laws of physics...or something.
So yeah, moonbronzeronastick much....also known as the holy grail which-was-really-made-of-bronze(r)

Tantpoke · 25/08/2017 23:08

Good lord what's wrong with me just bought loads of plain black t shirts from uniqlo (all women's i hasten to add) also all in the sale and dirt cheap

Tantpoke · 25/08/2017 23:30

So if you're vaguely intrigued as to what men's items I purchased in the sale for myself here are some pics (the random odd textured Trenchcoat I bought for £18 reduced from £135 is gone / sold out

Let me know what you think of these tops.

Yes, Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel is the one I meant upthread yong. Supposedly you can also mix it with a bit of moisturiser to thin it out, it kind of sounds close to moon on a stick potential. Also, for Chanel not crazy money as it supposedly will last for years.

Did you get it all in pink Tant Grin Those men's clothes look perfectly wearable though would be dresses on me probably at my height. Hope they suit you well. It's kind of odd, there used to be plenty of clothes like that for women, it wasn't really a trend thing but it wasn't purposely feminine or masculine, just basic. It's odd how that's fallen out of favour as it's just comfy everyday wear. Is this why everyone is always walking around like they're permanently heading to the gym the now?

OP posts:
userallusedup · 26/08/2017 13:58

I like those tops Tant they look nice and comfortable too. Men's tops unfortunately don't work well for me as I'm pear shaped so tend to be too big on the shoulders and\or too small round the hips.

I'm no help with bronzer as I don't wear it, I'm not pale but have tried in the past to find one that made me look a bit less yellow/sallow and more heathy. I've never had any joy though as they all looked either a bit dull and muddy or too shiny. That was years ago though so maybe I should try again especially as Winter Is Coming.

I'm now eyeing up more makeup storage but need really to do a cull first, once I've pared my collection down a bit I'm probably OK with what I've got.

Enid I've used rapid lash and it did work - I have thick, dark lashes but they're short and stumpy - rapid lash increased the length but the 'tips' that grew were much paler and only noticeable when I put mascara on. I gave up though as found I was getting odd little hairs growing at the sides of and underneath my eyes and they WERE black so not a good look Shock I've just gone back to just using a good lengthening mascara - benefit roller lash is my favourite.

EnidButton · 26/08/2017 15:28

user Shock at hairy cheekbones! I haven't had that (I've checked Grin) and lashes dark to tips but it does seem to be one of those things that works differently for people. I like the rapidbrow too.

Having a poorly day and I just caught sight of myself in the iPad screen...😱. Think a hair treatment (ok Elasticizer) and some veggies are in order. Going to have at least two weeks of no sugar or wheat and lots of healthy food. Get some glow back.
