Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEW ADDITIONS since last thread:

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

AUGUST 2017: Sunscreen is pretty much non-negotiable at the moment (not that it’s ever not Wink), RL bumps have been met in the road for some, unfortunately. Grief sucks but we do our best to offer a bit of comfort even if it is just something as inane as skincare chat Smile. Some of us are lucky enough to be nerding out in French pharmacies whilst pretending to do that holiday thing, the Shelf Porn Off is still on…

I can't believe we're on thread 9 Shock

Olli is the rest of your skin like that or just forehead?

Ollivander84 · 08/09/2017 19:01

Forehead and chin

Ollivander84 · 08/09/2017 19:03

Have raided my stash. Now look slightly less flaky
Cleansed with LRP dermo
Wiped with an oil essence
Used REN omega 3 serum oil
Moisturiser - yes to carrot calming cucumber
Sprayed hydrogel sleeping mask pack on

If that doesn't work by tomorrow I think I need chip fat Grin

Tantpoke · 08/09/2017 20:09

Olli Try good old fashioned Vaseline maybe?

I used vaseline a couple of years ago or so on my DS when he got flaky skin on his face from a strong zinc based Kids 50 spf and no moisturiser worked so when we arrived back home I slapped on some vaseline and it was gone by the morning.

EnidButton · 08/09/2017 20:18

Cicaplast!

Grin They need to start giving me commission. Seriously though, it might help.

botemp · 08/09/2017 20:47

How's your skin doing now Pupsie? Haven't tried the Turmeric mask, it's really easy to make one at home, provided you don't have a staining kind. Just chickpea flour, turmeric then mixed with either yoghurt or water. Speaking of Kiehl's I walked past it last night only to be greeted by Matthew McConaughey's extremely airbrushed face (the man loves the sun and I'm pretty sure anyone attempting to apply some sunscreen to it got lost in dreamy eyes or a smile or something) who apparently designed Hmm a moisturiser for them (it's just the ordinary Ultra Facial Moisturiser). Can't be too nasty about it as proceeds go to an autism charity but FFS designer!

Olli, it may be because I've been working on the brand new A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What? sheet (which I created because it appears to be the most common issue on here), but it sounds like you're in that territory and need to strip down your routine and possibly do a highly occlusive layer on top up at night. And yes, you studious lot will see that Squalane, Vaseline and Shea Butter heavy Cicaplast are all good options for that.

You could also attempt the 7 skin Korean method if you have anything that would work for that.

Yes, that's what I always thought, Tsmummy08, that certain vegetables benefitted from cooking, fermenting, etc. but that article makes it seem like it's all vegetables are better raw (but it may just be my interpretation of a poor summary).

I don't see it improving much either, my cousin proclaimed at 4 yrs old her thighs were too fat Sad .I remember healthy eating was all very niche when I was growing up and I was only aware because my mother was a health food nut, albeit a very contractarian one. Macrobiotic food/diet was the big thing among vegetarians then, vegans a relative rarity. I don't know why it was relatively popular here, possibly some spiritual/religious movement was attached to it. It really didn't exist outside of health food stores though and having to explain your dietary restrictions was a pain.

As for the new thing, not exactly in terms of food movement but in cookbookery realm, this post on 101 cookbooks came up quite recently and it's from someone who turned their Gran's recipe files into a cookbook. I think we'll definitely see more of that as it combines simple honest ingredients along with (borrowed) nostalgia that will appeal to what are relatively restless times. I think it's also a thing many people have contemplated publishing themselves, I've certainly considered it with my grandmother's, even though she was a self-confessed abysmal cook and my grandfather did all the cooking. They owned restaurants and delis though, so she knew very well how everything should taste and she had the uncanny ability to unravel people's best recipes that were many a housewife's pride and fame. So I have a boatload of those, always thought it had potential and my grandparents have an interesting background.

Thanks - it's so odd, it just started after riding. Cheeks are fine as is nose Confused
Feels better now, I sort of sealed my oil and moisturiser in with a spray sleep mask so will see how that goes
Not been using acnecide anywhere near my forehead and no retinol for days which makes it ever stranger. Maybe irritation after a sweaty hat for 4hrs?

Routine when skin is normal

Am - lotion cleanse, HA, moisturiser
pm - LRP dermo, occasional acid, then either retinol or HA + niaci + az acid, always moisturiser

botemp · 08/09/2017 20:53

Sorry mind still somewhat sieve-like, contradictory not contractarian.

OP posts:
EnidButton · 08/09/2017 20:53

Have you wiped the inside of your helmet with anything new?

Ollivander84 · 08/09/2017 20:54

Nope!
I can't tolerate mineral oil, Shea or high levels of silicone or I break out, which is helpful when my face wants to fall off

It literally went bright red, tight and sore like sunburn then the redness went and the peeling started

botemp · 08/09/2017 20:56

Are you still on a diet Olli? If it's low in fats it could be causing it, I know you're taking the omega supplements but I'm not sure how well that covers all fatty acid needs. Not doing a lot of night shifts and compensating with a lot of caffeinated drinks? Otherwise, it may just be an accumulation or a delayed response.

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 08/09/2017 21:00

29lbs lost so far. Omega one is fairly decent, it says 1400mg of omega 3 fatty acids
I'm also taking conjugated linoleic acid plus a multi vitamin plus a really good greens powder supplement

Ollivander84 · 08/09/2017 21:02

And the greens powder is
Spirulina 0.9g, Oat fibre 0.8g (Gluten), Spinach 0.7g, Broccoli 0.7g. Kale 0.7g, Wheat Grass 0.6g (Gluten), Barley Grass 0.6g, Watercress 0.5g, Tomato 0.5g, Carrot 0.5g, Golden Flaxseed 0.5g, Chlorella (Broken Cell Wall) 0.35g, Oregano 0.35g, Yucca root 0.3g, Beetroot (0.8% Nitrates) 0.25g, Rosemary 0.25g, Thyme 0.2g, Avocado Juice Powder 0.2g, Alfalfa Sprouts 0.2g, SoySprout 0.2g, Parsley 0.2g, Basil 0.2g, Sumac Bran (96% tannin) 0.15g, Kelp 0.01g .

botemp · 08/09/2017 21:16

I don't really speak lbs, but that's a lot in a short amount of time, isn't it? More than the recommended 0,5kg-1kg p/w. Or I've lost track of the weeks, also possible.

OP posts:
Tantpoke · 08/09/2017 21:20

Maybe just wipe, clean, wash the inside of your helmet when it touches your forehead, there's probably loads of bacteria in there, sorry.

It's not something we always think of washing or cleaning our head gear.

Clean it with something you know get on with i.e. won't cause a rash like a specific face wash etc

Ollivander84 · 08/09/2017 21:20

About 13kg the converter says! Started at the beginning of June

Tantpoke · 08/09/2017 21:21

*where

Ollivander84 · 08/09/2017 21:22

Yeah I have some water wipes actually so will take them up and attack it, and check the lining to make sure there's nothing irritating. I guess any sweaty fabric against skin for 4hrs is going to irritate

Tantpoke · 08/09/2017 21:27

I would suggest clean with dettol wipes first (to kill the bacteria) let it dry then wipe with your water wipes after so it won't irritate your skin.

Like a double cleanse for your hat.

Ollivander84 · 08/09/2017 21:29

Grin I can do that. Might get some odd looks if I announce double cleansing. No dettol.... I have anti bac gel or hydrogen peroxide 🤔

userallusedup · 08/09/2017 21:30

Olli I know you're not using it right now but that's almost exactly how my skin is reacting to TO ret 1%, mine is forehead and chin. I found LRP cicaplast Pro-Recovery really helps - it's different from the cicaplast balm that's always talked about on here and is specifically for chapped, flaking skin or post cosmetic peels. And a work colleague gave me some paw paw balm that I used on the worst of it and that helped too, and very surprisingly didn't make me spotty.

My sheeple TO purchases have arrived, haven't tested (or sniff tested) yet, will be doing so over the weekend.

botemp · 08/09/2017 21:36

Oh, I'm liking the not smelly at all smelly ass from TO. It plays really well with P50 for some reason. Haven't tried with Vit C yet as still on the CE-Tetra.

Mind still like a sieve, but didn't we have the riding hat and hygiene conversation a few weeks ago too Olli? Your forehead was really red and sensitive then too.

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 08/09/2017 21:45

Yep, I cleaned it then too, and wiped my face after riding which is why it's so puzzling. I've always worn that hat and never had an issue

EnidButton · 08/09/2017 23:03

Was it sunny at all during your long ride? The weather Up North has been all over the place lately. Is there a chance it's sunburn? But then you'd have it elsewhere surely?

Ollivander84 · 09/09/2017 06:09

Baffled here too! My million layers seem t have worked as I no longer look like coconut Grin
