Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEW ADDITIONS since last thread:

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

AUGUST 2017: Sunscreen is pretty much non-negotiable at the moment (not that it’s ever not Wink), RL bumps have been met in the road for some, unfortunately. Grief sucks but we do our best to offer a bit of comfort even if it is just something as inane as skincare chat Smile. Some of us are lucky enough to be nerding out in French pharmacies whilst pretending to do that holiday thing, the Shelf Porn Off is still on…

I can't believe we're on thread 9 Shock

Thanks so much bo I'll definitely check this out, I have a kiko in my local shopping centre Grin

mintmagnummm · 06/09/2017 13:42

Just looked at it online bo and it contains fragrance AngrySad not sure how my skin would tolerate it Hmm

Tsmummy08 · 06/09/2017 14:20

Miffy initially from Sephora in Spain and then from Amazon - seems a completely genuine product, sold by an Asian seller IIRC

miffy2 · 06/09/2017 19:26

Thanks, Tsmummy and also Bo for earlier confirmation of serum.

I need to decide on which Vitamin C I will try next.

I have narrowed it down to:
Medik8 CE Tetra or Thione
TO one of the new ones (I have only tried MAP so far)
Timeless (RP - can't remember if I love it enough or not)
Or another...by the time I make up my mind I will have seen or heard of at least another few. Oh dear.

Part of me wants to return to LRP Redermic C10 as I loved it but I need something stronger.

Pupsiecola · 06/09/2017 22:11

I remember watching a documentary about it some years ago bo:-

www.bbc.co.uk/sn/humanbody/truthaboutfood/young/tomatoes.shtml

I don't know why tomatoes, but yes, the red seems to be a theme!

My Vit C arrived today. Wasn't so keen on the excessive packaging, but then I'm someone who always refused any tissue paper/fancy paper bag wrapping from shops such as The White Stuff. It always ends up straight in the recycling bin anyway.

I shall start with it tomorrow. I am also going to London tomorrow to have red vein treatment...

botemp · 06/09/2017 22:22

55g of tomato paste everyday Shock I think I'll stick with sunscreen.

Good luck with the vein treatment tomorrow, will be curious to hear of your experience.

Sorry mint, it must be a masking fragrance as it has no discernible scent to me. I was also under the impression Kiko was predominantly fragrance free. Thankfully I've had no reaction with it.

DH takes lycopene on advice of our ivf consultants. No relevance here but thought I'd throw that in there. Grin

EnidButton · 06/09/2017 22:27

(Amongst other advised amino acids and vitamins I should add.)

botemp · 06/09/2017 22:37

Right, you know when it's time for bed when you start contemplating thoughts of bright red sperm Blush

But before I do since I keep forgetting, brain's a bit of a sieve as I'm not sleeping properly so in my hazy state I accidentally used the Avene cleansing oil as my shampoo the other morning which turns out to be quite a decent clarifying shampoo as I had quite a bit of dry shampoo and other styling products in it. Despite forgetting to use conditioner in my befuddlement it wasn't super static dry. Think I might try it again as a sort of precleanse.

Interesting bo.

I forgot to say, I ordered some of those mini bamboo 'flannels' - thanks to whoever recommended them. I really like bamboo and have a couple of base layers in it. Anyway, the cloths arrived today. Already been washed and used. Really like them.

Ollivander84 · 06/09/2017 23:02

Still here, still spotty Grin
V v basic routine at the minute, cleanse, acnecide, moisturise. Hopefully it will clear soon!
Did a 22km horse ride today that took about 4hrs so I'm a little stiff and achy now

mintmagnummm · 07/09/2017 06:43

Bo I might pop into the store and check it out anyway, it's possible the ingredients listed are wrong so I will double check. I really want to try the bye bye undereye by it cosmetics but it's not readily available to buy in shops and qvc is out of stock in the one I want.

Pupsiecola · 07/09/2017 12:12

So I've had my veins treated. What I didn't tell you guys was that it was free, because they are training a new doctor. Not new as in newly qualified, but new to this procedure. So I wasn't worried. It was completely supervised at all times by another doctor. I happened to email this Harley Street Clinic last week and they wrote back with their prices (about £600 for first consult + treatment). Five minutes later she emailed to say they were having this training day and I could get treated foc. So worth the 4 hour round trip to London!!

I got brownie points from the doctor about my skincare understanding and routine, and he said I have good skin :)

Will report back on results later. Have some localised redness. It wasn't very painful either. Currently in a cab and off to meet a chum.

Pupsiecola · 07/09/2017 12:13

PS I got the last appointment otherwise I'd have mentioned it here.

EnidButton · 07/09/2017 14:24

but new to this procedure. So I wasn't worried.

😳 Brace woman! Glad it went well. Sounds very positive. Is it a one off thing or do you go for more or top ups?

EnidButton · 07/09/2017 14:24

*Brave

Pupsiecola · 07/09/2017 14:48

Lol Enid. I did lots of research into the procedure and the clinic, so I wasn't as gung ho as it sounds. He even thought I worked in the medicine because of my understanding of the procedure and other expressions I had used during our pre treatment consultation.

I shouldn't need to go back. Unlike lasering it's pretty much a one treatment fix.

EnidButton · 07/09/2017 16:00

Let us know how it's looking once the redness has calmed down although it doesn't sound that bad now.

Pupsiecola · 07/09/2017 16:54

I've just got home. Hardly any redness. Any redness is localised. There is definitely a marked improvement in overall redness. I only had 3 highly visible, defined veins; two around my nose and one about half an inch under one eye. But he also treated lots of just- under-the-surface, small broken veins that alone weren't really noticeable but that did add to a slightly red complexion on my cheeks. He actually said from normal distance he wouldn't have said I had Rosacea. He was fascinating actually. He said a lot of TV stars get sent in to have nasal veins sorted, and he often does their make up artists whist they're there with them.

My DH has messaged to say he can't find the LRP cream I asked him to get in NYC (the one with probiotic). Bless him, he's been wondering around Sephora looking for it. I've told him to find a chemist (I did tell him that! But thinking about it, do they sell LRP in chemists in the US or am I sending him on a wild goose chase?). He has the leave-in conditioner I want to try, which had arrived at his hotel by the time he got there.

Oh, I tried the Vit C this morning. Liking it very much so far. Two bottles is a fab idea. I'm keeping the open one in the fridge. It doesn't sting or anything, and it felt really good on my skin. I used 5 drops as per the instructions and it felt enough, just. Might use 6 as I like to take it down to the top of my bra. But I don't want to waste a single drop on accounk of the £££. I think I'm going to like it.

Finally, whilst at Waterloo I popped into Kielh's. Has anyone tried their face mask with Turmeric? The assistant lost me at "... and it has cranberry seeds in it, which when you wash it off act like an exfoliator".

Mask

EnidButton · 07/09/2017 20:31

You could suggest he looks in Walgreen's as they half own Boots now. They stock No.7 products and Boots stock some American stuff now so maybe the French products are more likely to be there now too? Grin

EnidButton · 07/09/2017 20:34

Thanks for the update btw. I have a couple in a cluster on one of my thighs and it stops me wearing shorts etc, so I'm very interested.

Ollivander84 · 08/09/2017 12:06

Help Grin I am flaking to death
I've tried acid pads, HA, serum, more moisturiser etc etc. Not sure if it's the acnecide or retinol (I use them both very sparingly) but my makeup is patchy and settling to the bloody flakes
Bright ideas? I'm drinking loads of water and take high dose omega 3 every day

Shop · 08/09/2017 15:17

I flake from benzoyl peroxide sometimes and find TO squalane quite good 😊

Tsmummy08 · 08/09/2017 18:08

Bo interesting article - yes some vegetables become more nutritious when cooked as some nutrients like lycopene are more bio-available after cooking - and certain nutrients need to be eaten with fat for optimal absorption.

I'm not sure what the next food movement will be - for me personally, "clean eating" is not a new thing. That ethos was part of my life back in the 90s, it's just mainstream now. Perhaps we'll be seeing a more balanced approach to food with an emphasis on enjoyment and nourishment (of the body AND soul). As for our relationship with food, I (sadly) rarely come across a woman who has a completely rational relationship with food (but of course this only comes to light after some time so I'm not talking about casual acquaintances), and sub-clinical eating disorders are quite common. It's a function of our society and culture, so until that changes, I can't see the prevalence of disordered eating changing either :(
