Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEW ADDITIONS since last thread:

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

AUGUST 2017: Sunscreen is pretty much non-negotiable at the moment (not that it’s ever not Wink), RL bumps have been met in the road for some, unfortunately. Grief sucks but we do our best to offer a bit of comfort even if it is just something as inane as skincare chat Smile. Some of us are lucky enough to be nerding out in French pharmacies whilst pretending to do that holiday thing, the Shelf Porn Off is still on…

I can't believe we're on thread 9 Shock

Hello Thanks for all your advice regarding the
La Roche Posay Dermo Cleanser. I have just ordered from Easyparapharmay for a really good price.

I have just been on The Ordinary to order (repurchase) my vitamin C.

I was going to try the 30%
Just unsure about the bit that says its silicone.

My skin has been looking really good and I have been using the 23%

JDSTER · 27/08/2017 19:53

purple I've been using 30% TO Vit C for a couple of weeks now and at the risk of repeating myself, I really like it. It's silicone based like a primer so a dry texture that leaves skin quite matte looking. It will depend in skin type I think as to whether people like it. Great for my oily skin type. I'm sat here at the airport waiting to return to home. Back on the hot cloth cleansing and retinoid when I get home Smile.

botemp · 27/08/2017 20:04

Did you manage to enjoy your holiday, JDSTER? How tan are you really? Grin

purple, it's highly individual if you like the 23% and have none of the sensorial/textural issues you can stick with it. Silicones aren't terrible, but not everyone gets on well with them so it's really up to you what you'd prefer.

Ok, pity my first world problems please or just laugh maniacally instead. I went on bronzing research expedition number 2 and discovered bleeding buggering hell that Sisley have a bronzing gel... a matte and a sparkly one... the matte one is bloody perfection. I've been staring at my arm all day now whimpering about how I want it despite its stupid price but it's a tiny tube and I'd be way too tempted to just smear it all over my body because it's so damn pretty. I thought it was too dark at first but once it dried down it was just the perfect amount of warmth and reflection without shimmery shit, knocking out any sallowness. Bugger it, why oh why is Sisley becoming my go to brand? My other hobbies do not, in fact, include burning money for shits and giggles...

Agghh olli eek!! How did your mare react?? Judging by the way mine was this aft, I'm vastly relieved this didn't happen to me - I was out for a quiet pootle too, with the tiny (3 and a half) on board her sec a when Madam decided she'd be quite up for tanking up a steep stone track homeward bound....we had to have words....
tant sorry not sure what the numbers mean shade-wise but guessing you're fair-skinned and possibly pink-toned? Correct me if I've got that wildly wrong!
bo oh bugger oh bugger oh bugger, you had to try Sisley didn't you???!

yongnian · 27/08/2017 20:15

grim sum37 rose soap stick....? Tell me more...what is that?

botemp · 27/08/2017 20:21

You're right, Yong, I have no one but myself to blame, I knew it was a bad idea from the moment I opened that tube... sorely tempted as I've just had a 30% off offer pop in my inbox since the Dutch women's team won some Hockey match... argh it's time limited until midnight and I also discovered they do a body version but it's only the glittery one but that's kind of nice on the body and the Chanel one is silly money too now with the discount aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh

OP posts:
botemp · 27/08/2017 20:24

The sum37 stick was the 'it' product when I got into AB. It looks like a giant Pritt stick but it's basically a bar of soap with rose petals in it (but it's not a soap-soap) that you rub on your face directly and it lathers up a bit. It was one of the first Low pH ones and smells really nice. It used to be crazy money but the price has dropped significantly since the hype died down. Think Gothamista is a big fan of it too.

Good holiday thanks Bo. Some mixed emotions following recent events but to be expected.

I'm utterly pale. I don't tan at all so I just keep in the shade. LRP facial sunscreen which is terrible for me day to day (grease ball) but works a treat on holiday and fully waterproof. Used LRP sunscreen for kids which was great. Days I used amber solaire on them they caught the sun much more. About to take off soon so see you all soon Smile

Ollivander84 · 27/08/2017 20:30

Yong - the first few minutes were slightly scary as they were coming down the road! We had just done 20km so I was hoping being a veteran she would be calm. Oh no Hmm
So what else could we do but join in! And she adored it Grin

yongnian · 27/08/2017 20:47

Shock Shock
How far did you go with them?? Did you jump?? (You do jump with your mare anyway, don't you?) I'm picturing enormous spread hedges with ditches and everything. Fair play, your mare is in super good condition for 22 to be up for doing that after 20k Grin. Bet the field were aghast at your hi viz!!
Yes bo well you might....wags finger sternly...
I like the sound of a rose petal low-soap stick...

Ollivander84 · 27/08/2017 20:58

Not far luckily! Joined in for about 25 mins, and yes she was cantering sideways up the road at first Blush despite having been out for 3hrs. They were lovely and shouted to me was I joining in and as we were spinning in excitement we didn't really have a choice Grin
I got this little video to prove how bloody amazing she was (I love the sound, nothing like hooves all together) https://instagram.com/p/BYTFVbfhyep/

botemp · 27/08/2017 21:06

I've just looked up the MakeupAlley reviews (4.7 out of 5 for anyone that care). It's full of other saddos geeking out over the Sisley gel bronzer so I feel slightly less bad about it all now especially since they're paying US and AUS prices that are even more insane Halo Stupid code doesn't seem to work but I found it cheaper anyway with Allbeauty, thanks again Olli that place is brilliant for my Sisley addiction.

I do love that allbeauty! They seem to have good niche perfumes on there too. I'm covering a perfume at the minute but it's £95 for 30mls!

mintmagnummm · 27/08/2017 21:11

I love allbeauty too

botemp · 27/08/2017 21:12

It's a good thing they didn't have the body version.

Have you finished painting yet, Olli?

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 27/08/2017 21:15

No, only started today as was waiting for brushes to arrive! I've done some of the cutting in but the hallway is such a weird shape I have LOADS to do
This is some of the colour on, done today

It's a proper grey, none of this finding its lilac/blue/brown on the wall! My dad said it looked like concrete Hmm he has no taste

yongnian · 27/08/2017 21:53

She looks like she's been doing it all her life! Grin.
Nice paint colour btw

Skinfulnappies46 · 28/08/2017 19:18

What serum should I use?
Does this seem ok?

botemp · 28/08/2017 19:51

Something with HA maybe? I was distracted (but thankfully sensible enough not to buy) by The Hero Project's Hyasoft when browsing Allbeauty last night like I needed to spend more money. Anyhow most of THP stuff hasn't interested me due to the inclusion of essential oils (specifically the citrus ones) but this has a really appealing short INCI:

Aqua (Water), Sodium Hyaluronate, Panthenol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Hydroxide.

It promises a great moisture boost, I'm not all that convinced on that (in comparison to other HA serums) but I do like that it's in gel form for a change. Seems a nice alternative to TO HA + B5 that not many get on with well.

Have you considered a retinol/retinoid yet? Also, think a bit of Nia may be good for the redness, so Cerave PM would be a good one to look at if the TBS Vit E runs out.

Ollivander84 · 28/08/2017 19:59

Nothing to report. Skin still shite, still painting walls Grin

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 28/08/2017 20:25

Have you tried The Hero Projects C serum botemp? It is very satisfying to use, delightfully stingy.

Skinfulnappies46 · 28/08/2017 20:47

Thanks Bo

Can you recommend a HA and a retinol/retinoid please?

botemp · 28/08/2017 20:51

No, that's one of the ones that's heavy on citrus essential oils, which would explain the sting possibly. Which one have you used Damn, the Ethylated one or the Glow Drops? The hand cream with SPF20 looks interesting too, it sounds like a hybrid scrub/moisturiser.
