Are skinny jeans going to be "in" forever?

tobee · 13/07/2017 16:09

Are they still in? I quite like them and they suit me ok but they seem to have been in forever! I'm sure I heard about 5/6 years ago they were out, but they don't seem to be. Just idly wondering.

Also cold shoulder tops, dresses etc have been around for a while but now they are here with a vengeance. Feels like designers are in a bit of a rut. I suppose I mean high street rather than Paris/Milan etc catwalk.

I don't wear super skinny anymore - I now tend to wear straight cut or the new mum jeans (which reminds me of when I wore levi 501s 25 years ago).

picklemepopcorn · 13/07/2017 21:07

I'm shocked to find myself wearing skinnies for the first time. I've avoided them as my legs are like a rugby player. However, friend says the wrinkles in them disguise my wobbly knees so I'm sticking with them!

yourerubberimglue · 13/07/2017 21:19

They're basics now ... but mid-high rose never low rise.
Flares, boot cut, straight leg, boyfriend and mum jeans variously move in and out of style again ... but skinnies are always in.

yourerubberimglue · 13/07/2017 21:21

Then again maybe I'm biased seen as they've been in since I was 5ish years old

Flofferton · 13/07/2017 21:22

The problem so far has been that the shops haven't pushed a trend that is flattering to the average woman to replace them

Tbh I'm not sure flattering has a whole lot to do with it. skinny jeans themselves have to be one of the most unflattering garments people can wear. Great on the very slim but pretty unforgiving otherwise.

needastrongone · 13/07/2017 21:25

Being skinny and petite, I may be the only person in the world who wishes the trend to continue for everGrin.

Picked up a pair of Guess skinnies for £20 only yesterday, on sale.

Flofferton · 13/07/2017 21:25

You're v young so it's understandable you think skinnies are always in style but up until Kate Moss started wearing them they were firmly out in the fashion wilderness and had been for s long, long time. The only people who wore were deeply unfashionable Iron Maiden fans.

inaclearingstandsaboxer · 13/07/2017 21:27

I hate skinny jeans - I am a 50 yr old mother of two. I have a fat arse and chunky thighs

I last wore skinny jeans in my punk years in the late 1970s and early 80s

I look like Max Wall in skinny jeans....

EccentricPickle · 13/07/2017 21:31

I live in skinny jeans when I'm not at work, it's like my uniform!

welshgirlwannabe · 13/07/2017 21:35

I bought my first pair of skinny jeans this year. I think it's safe to say they'll be on their way out now...

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 13/07/2017 21:35

They will definitely go eventually. Bootlegs had a similar longevity, to be replaced by skinnies. They keep trying to bring bootlegs back but it never really takes off.

I have to lecture in fashion history, most things work on a twenty year or so cycle, give or take a few years. They've been around for ages, so will be on the way out.

The one thing l don't get is the ballerina shoe. For me, this had a burst of popularity a few years ago, but is well past it's sell by date now. I think loafers and brogues replaced ballerinas .

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 13/07/2017 21:36

Or flatform type things

needastrongone · 13/07/2017 21:36

I'm 45 btwSmile

DD loves mom jeans, she's 16, they seems to be the style of choice for me, her mates alternative between these and skinnies.

ShimmeringIce · 13/07/2017 21:43

Floisme lightbulb moment! Thank you!

I'm getting tired of skinnies and have bought cropped boot cut jeans and some cropped wide leg trousers, but they just don't look right, and it's my top half that's the problem Shock Everything's just too wide! What tops are you supposed to wear with not-skinnies???

needastrongone · 13/07/2017 21:43

*her

Whisky2014 · 13/07/2017 21:44

I always wore boot cut jeans. But now everyone wears skinny and so do I. I tried on a pair of boot cut jeans not long ago and I felt massive in them. Because they aren't skin tight I think it now just feels like extra baggage? :(

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 13/07/2017 21:45

It's about balance. Mom jeans look better with a shorter top. Skinnies look better with volume on the top half

Flofferton · 13/07/2017 21:45

Yeah bootcut jeans had a long old stay last time around and were still widely worn when skinny jeans came in. There's always an overlap of a few years until the masses start copying what the trend setters are wearing. Although maybe a klaxon would be good, town cryers would wander the streets yelling 'skinny jeans are over. I repeat, skinny jeans are now over' 😀

Sunnie1984 · 13/07/2017 21:48

Thankfully they seem to be slowly on the way out.

I can finally but BootCut jeans again, they disappeared for about 5 years and they are the best cut for me!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 13/07/2017 21:57

There's a chick lit novel (can't for the life of me remember the title) when the main character wakes up from a coma after a few years and her best mate brings her in some skinny jeans to go home in and she's 'wtf are these and where do my boots go?' Which always makes me laugh when this discussion comes up.

They will go out soon I think. But I hope it's not boot cuts that will replace them.

Mamia15 · 13/07/2017 21:59

With mum jeans I wear tops partially tucked in with a decent belt, the bottoms slightly rolled up to show my ankles.

BuzzKillington · 13/07/2017 22:03

I cant see them being 'out' for a long time yet.

My friend wore boot cuts with heels on a night out last week. She's tall and slim, but they looked so wrong and monumentally unflattering.

Judydreamsofhorses · 13/07/2017 22:11

I think on them as a basic now. I like black ones for work with a blouse, but for casual prefer a mom jean or more recently a slightly cropped wide leg (which I know is hated on here).

VanillaSugar · 13/07/2017 22:12

I thought was the only one who remembered Max Wall! My people, do the Professor walk right now!

Therealslimshady1 · 13/07/2017 22:15

I am done with skinnies now!

I can't just wear my Hush harem trousers every day though. I need a new kind of trouser!
