Are skinny jeans going to be "in" forever?

Are they still in? I quite like them and they suit me ok but they seem to have been in forever! I'm sure I heard about 5/6 years ago they were out, but they don't seem to be. Just idly wondering.

Also cold shoulder tops, dresses etc have been around for a while but now they are here with a vengeance. Feels like designers are in a bit of a rut. I suppose I mean high street rather than Paris/Milan etc catwalk.

Actually, I think skinnies look pretty good on most people, which you wouldn't have thought. if someone tried to tell you about them if you'd never seen them, you'd think only for 6 footers of size 0 proportions.

I always used to like boot cuts but was always catching my heal in them and falling over when standing up.

I love skinnies- I'm slim with long legs (don't worry- bad face) and I hope they never go out of fashion! I love the unfussyness of them, the warmth (no draughts up your leg), the way you can show off your footwear.

Bootcuts were heavy, draughty and usually needed a belt. I hate belts.

SunshineOutdoors · 13/07/2017 22:18

I used to live in tight tops and flares and now it's skinnies, but I'm glad as my stomach is a lot easier to hide now. Resisted skinnies for ages because your feet look fucking massive when you're used to a wide leg. Much happier now as all my jeans used to get chewed up at the back and I got the candle wick effect when I thought rained, damp up to my knees.

SunshineOutdoors · 13/07/2017 22:19

Meant now it's skinnies and looser tops

Flofferton · 13/07/2017 22:22

They really don't. But we're so acclimatised to the look of skinny jeans so that even if they don't suit someone's shape it doesn't seem to stand out so much.

And this goes for men in skinny jeans as well as women. I know a rugby player with massive big thighs who just loves his skinny jeans but he'd really look better in a slightly looser fit!

PantPlot · 13/07/2017 22:28

I remember when they were called drainpipes. Extra fashion kudos if they were pinstriped drainpipes.

And yes, they were deeply, deeply unfashionable for quite some time.

KnitFastDieWarm · 13/07/2017 23:05

Ooh this brings back memories of buying my first pair of skinnies and also my first pair of leggings back in 2006. I felt wildly avant garde! Grin

Madeyemoodysmum · 13/07/2017 23:11

Sorry but what are mom jeans? Do u mean high waisted.

BeyonceZ · 13/07/2017 23:35

Yes, mom jeans are high-waisted, sort of straightish cut jeans. They've been popular for a year now.

OhWellNeverMindEh · 14/07/2017 07:10

I bought a pair of super-skinny, dark blue skinniest in 2001 and have been wearing them (many more pairs later) since.

I don't think they are a feature item, more of a staple, I buy fab tops and shoe/boots instead and the jeans just anchor the outfit.

If they go out of fashion I'll lose 3/4 of my wardrobe Shock

lasttimeround · 14/07/2017 07:14

I thought in fashion terms skinnier are basically done. Still totally fine to wear but new shapes are about.

PossumInAPearTree · 14/07/2017 07:35

Teen Dd bought "mom jeans" the other day and I see lots of uni students round town wearing the same sort of style. Looser, straight cut.

Shenanagins · 14/07/2017 07:38

Had a quick look on topshop to see what mom jeans are and they appear to be similar to the style we wore in the late '80's/ early 90's.

PossumInAPearTree · 14/07/2017 07:42

Yes, very similar. And the lighter blue shades which were more popular in the late 80s, early 90s seem to be more popular rather than darker, indigo type denim.

picklemepopcorn · 14/07/2017 08:40

I'd better get some more before they go...
I hate boot cuts and low waist jeans.

Best ever were a straight wide leg that sucked in my tummy. Wore them through, sadly, and have never found any since.

PNGirl · 14/07/2017 10:03

I miss Topshop Mooch jeans. They were like slightly flared boyfriend jeans and they looked awesome on everyone.

But yes, I think skinnies are going to be around for a long time because they go with any shoe with no worries about length for heels v flats like there were with bootcuts, and they're literally just like a leg covering rather than a style. Like denim leggings.

Floisme · 14/07/2017 10:13

I agree that skinnies are more practical, especially in rainy UK. That's extending their life but it won't save them forever. If practicality was all that mattered then cagoules would be in fashion forever.

picklemepopcorn · 14/07/2017 10:21

You could argue that people keep wearing cagoules even though they aren't in fashion...

Floisme · 14/07/2017 10:24

Yes that's my point - we wear them but they're not considered stylish.

Flofferton · 14/07/2017 10:25

And some people will continue to wear skinny jeans long after they've gone out of fashion. As the Iron Maiden fans did in the 80s. They laughed in the face of fashion and good luck to them!

Floisme · 14/07/2017 10:28

Of course they will wear them (or at least for as long as the shops still sell them) but the op was asking whether they will be in fashion forever and my personal view is no.

PNGirl · 14/07/2017 10:29

There's a difference between "in fashion" and " still available in the shops when your current pair wear through at the thighs" I suppose. Eventually the former catches up with the latter!

tobee · 14/07/2017 11:17

Floff you're probably quite right.

That's been my view too.

Floisme · 14/07/2017 11:24

Dammit we agree then Grin
Maybe I should take myself off to AIBU - I'm feeling a bit argumentative for Style and Beauty today.
