Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. If you wish join us on this thread I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

MAY/JUNE 2017: It’s summer and some of us are hourglasses (and otherwise beautifully shaped) that desperately need to bitch and moan about the severe lack of clothes available to us. Also, some of us are recovering from a ‘fine’ butchering to our hair. Don’t ask. Some of us suffer from all of the above. At least the weather is good, wear sunscreen.

Slowly catching up...

Glad to hear all ok Bo but sorry to hear about your horse Yong

Saw your scans Olli bloody hell!! And I'm also drawn to the same shades of eyeshadow but am getting more and more frustrated with my ever-more hooded eyes which mean my best efforts at creating depth/illusion of a socket just look shit :(

On the same theme has anyone tried these things for saggy eyelids?:
www.amazon.co.uk/Lids-Design-Medical-Instant-Correcting/dp/B018EHOJ2K?tag=mumsnetforum-21

I've tried cheap double eyelid tape but didn't get a great result - these things above look v similar but are much more expensive. I'm wondering whether I should persist with the asian products...

Vitamin C products: I'm sticking with my Active Formulas one which seems to do the job - I can't see that it's made any difference to a few age spots I've got but I see it more as an anti-oxidant and collagen boosting thing for me.

Also loving my BareMinerals physical SPF 50, highly recommended for drier skinned types looking for a physical block. It has a white cast but this goes away when rubbed in and evens out my skin tone a little.

I think Cinders? liked the Skinceuticals sheer mineral spf 50 but wasn't it the tinted one? Can't remember, but the untinted one I got is VERY white and requires makeup to avoid the zombie look and has an odd greasy but chalky texture!! Not sure if anyone here would like it but if may try putting it on a selling group or possibly using on my or DDs body.

EnidButton · 17/07/2017 16:50

Any more loose powder suggestions please? Something very very fine and white. The Lancôme one I got is too greasy.

I really liked the Eshiko hd powder but guru emporium stopped stocking it. Really wish they hadn't.

That mint coloured one was an odd shade on me.

Ollivander84 · 17/07/2017 16:57

NYX HD powder?

Tsmummy08 · 17/07/2017 18:19

Enid I like ByTerry Hyaluronic Hydra Powder - bit pricey but not drying and starts out white but sort of blends into skin... not sure of your skin type?

yongnian · 17/07/2017 20:55

Thank you tsmummy and thanks for response on vit c. I've got a similar eyelid issue to you developing...bit of creping going on too...looks crap under certain eyeshadows now... Sad - I have always been a big eyeshadow wearer....was admiring that shade you and olli are talking about on someone just the other day but think it would probably enhance only the crepe...rats!!!!!

EnidButton · 17/07/2017 21:30

Olli Had that one behire in pressed and I think I liked it. It's top of the list.

TS I can't have hyluronic anything unfortunately. It breaks me out but thank you for the suggestion. I'm very pale white with a t-zone that's prone to getting a bit oily by the end of the day. My foundation definitely needs a powder over the top.

EnidButton · 17/07/2017 21:31

Thanks Olli btw. I'd forgotten that one.

yongnian · 18/07/2017 10:23

Anyone know a good dupe for nars multiple....? Preferably in a non-sparkly bronzer shade, tone suitable for olive/tan...(yellow undertone).
I don't want much...Grin or should I just bite the bullet and buy nars.....

Pupsiecola · 18/07/2017 10:55

Very happy with my new Mac lip crayon. Thanks bo for the rec.

botemp · 18/07/2017 11:31

emma8t4, you're probably best off using the form in the OP then if you need specific product recs.

Enid, the Makeup Forever HD powder, maybe? Though the NYX is supposed to be a dupe for that, isn't it? My TKMaxx often has little MF intro sets with a travel size version of the powder included for not much money.

Yong, ehm, not sparkly-free (very faint shimmer but in a really flattering way- catching the light vs. glitter bomb iykwim) and probably about the same price but it's probably the only thing I've tried from Charlotte Tilbury and actually liked, the beach stick in Ibiza, that one definitely flatters us 'greenish yellow' toned people though I suspect I'm a shade or two lighter than you but I use very little of it. People always ask me if I just returned from holiday when I wear that as it gives that super healthy tan-ish glow. Thanks for reminding me to dig it out again Smile

Thinking about it I'm sure I saw dupes of the Nars multiples somewhere on the very cheap end of the scale, may have been Primark or Makeup Revolution. No idea what they're like though.

I don't remember reccing that Pupsie Blush but I'm glad you like it.

OP posts:
botemp · 18/07/2017 11:35

Bugger now I remember, it was at Kiko, yong, but by the looks of it, they only do blusher shades.

OP posts:
yongnian · 18/07/2017 11:52

Hmm, the Charlotte Tilbury sounds nice..I don't mind subtle shimmer, just now full on sparkly blah.....I saw loads of KIKO stuff at various markets in France at Christmas so might have a trawl and see if I can find one next week there...thankee!
pupsie lip crayon sounds nice, what shade did you go for? I'm currently tempted by nars powermatte in walk on the wild side but am a bit confused by the promo pic as it sounds like it will be ultra matte by the name, yet doesn't look it. I love a matte lip but think mouth is ageing slightly too much now for total matte...

EnidButton · 18/07/2017 12:24

bo I was just coming on to say it was the Make up Forever powder that I've had before not the Nyx. Similar packaging. Can't remember if I liked it that much but think it was better than the Lancôme one. Thank you.

emma8t4 · 18/07/2017 12:44

Thanks botemp I have an oil based cleanser for makeup, plus a cream cleanser that I can use (only sample sized but will do). I used to use the la roche posay effaclar and while I didn't have as many spots, I found it very drying and had dry patches around my eyebrows. I'm now using the decleor aroma cleanse 3 in 1 and my skin feels happier less tight/itchy/dry but my pores are bigger and I'm getting more spots. Should I ditch this?

I have a facial oil (decleor Neroli) which I use at night which I like, so I could do with recommendations for SPF, serum, acid toner? Which bit makes the difference to hydration? Product recommendations would be great.

Pupsiecola · 18/07/2017 13:22

You are quite right bo. No-one recommended it lol. I was interested in a NARS one but there is no NARS in my town. Anyway, I'm happy :-)

It's this one yong. It's not really a nude. TBH I have enough nudes already Blush. It's creamy with a bit of shine, comfy and lasts a good while. I can't do matte these days. I find this sort of MAC one much more flattering!

wiltingfast · 19/07/2017 08:31

Ahhh. Lippy chat Smile

Am v tempted to buy nars velvet lip glide in bound, looks like a nice neutral pink with a semi matte finish see it here

Any one used it?

Or what about mac twig? here

Ollivander84 · 19/07/2017 08:42

Mac twig is v v popular although I haven't used it personally. Nars I've only used the velvet lip pencil
Colourpop do good liquid lipsticks in various finishes (matte, metallic, satin etc)
La splash are my favourite matte ones as they last all day but some find them drying
The Jouer metallic in citronade rose is next on my list!

botemp · 19/07/2017 09:22

yong, I take it back on the CT Beach Stick. It's far lighter than I remember and whilst it's lovely and does give that healthy rested holiday glow it does so, strangely, without much detectable colour. I ended up using a powdered bronzer over it (a bit like Lisa Eldridge's most recent tutorial) that gave it a nicer depth without looking muddy or orange but I'm not sure if it would be any good for darker skin than mine on its own.

I never ended up buying it as the colours are quite strong and my counter only had a very small selection of them but will probably gravitate back to them come winter time, but I checked out the Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro liquid lipsticks (officially matte but more of a comfy semi-sheen) on Olli's rec and I was really impressed with them. I had also intended to get some of the very famous Peri Peri Airy Velvet ones from S. Korea but apparently they reak to the high heavens of perfume... just why does anyone want to taste old lady on their lips????

yongnian · 19/07/2017 10:01

Nice colour that pupsie.
I did find a good pink nude slick/barely there last year from an Elle counter in monoprix - it's good for that 'your lips but better' thing.
Did my decants for travelling, yesterday. Always a pleasing experience, in my book. I even have labels this year obsessive much
A few people were talking about Vichy upthread. Have been thinking about dipping a toe in there - it seems to have rebranded itself lately...though of course around forever. Is it still quite perfumed does anyone know...? I remember my mother using it years ago.
bo that Korean perfumed lip thing sounds horrific!! And hmm, so the quest for the perfect bronzer remains....also known as the bow to the inevitable of stumping up for the classic nars multiple.

Oh and everybody who wants to play
Inspired by the memory of Vichy, what's your earliest make up or skincare memory?
Aged about 6, playing with a very very old lipstick that was in a gold-y type tube...it came from my grandmother...lippie was bright orange and worn to a roundy stub. I still have it!!!!
And the other is a bright turquoise Almay eyeshadow of my mothers which I was fascinated by and plastered all over my eyelids...didn't quite have the effect I was hoping for...
Oh and two original Mary Quant lipsticks, one a really rather current brick red brown colour I'd still wear today...and the other a shade of..well grey. Which I wouldn't. Still remember the smell of these too.
Anyone else?

wiltingfast · 19/07/2017 10:49

My mum was a big fan of Estee Lauder. I remember being fascinated with a tub of loose powder! I remember the perfumes more though. White linen and youth dew. Also Chanel no 5 (of course)! And someone giving me a mini set of Elizabeth Arden perfume.

My first lippy was rimmel heather shimmer! Wore it for years. Grin

yongnian · 19/07/2017 12:04

Ooh I had rimmel heather shimmer too! Loved it....
I also had a prized make up bag from France, brought over for me by my godmother. And then my brother got a Saturday job at boots and bought me a boots 17 make up palette...ecstasy...

mintmagnummm · 19/07/2017 14:50

Does anyone here avoid wheat in their diet?

wiltingfast · 19/07/2017 15:59

No, I love wheat!

Pupsiecola · 19/07/2017 16:18

As a kid in the 80s my mum had two eye shadows; powders, in little bottles. One was bright blue, the other bright green. Both were Mary Quant, and from the 60s!!

Sainsburys own cleanser, toner and moisturiser. My first foray into skincare, circa 1986.

Ten-0-Six (I never used it as it was too smelly and stingy, but my friend did).

Flex shampoo and conditioner. Banana yellow coloured.

A vanity case for travelling.

An afro comb, for the perm.

Elnett, of course.

Banana clips.

I remember everyone obsessing over Miss Selfridge lipsticks; Iron Maiden and Iron Lady.

Roll on lip gloss, and the rollerball would often seize up.

Electric blue mascara.
