Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. If you wish join us on this thread I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

MAY/JUNE 2017: It’s summer and some of us are hourglasses (and otherwise beautifully shaped) that desperately need to bitch and moan about the severe lack of clothes available to us. Also, some of us are recovering from a ‘fine’ butchering to our hair. Don’t ask. Some of us suffer from all of the above. At least the weather is good, wear sunscreen.

Oh gosh JDSTER. I am so sorry for your loss. Have you got support?

JDSTER · 15/07/2017 10:28

I'm not at home because dad Didnt live close by. Husband had terrible job of telling the children this morning. Dads wife is here so I'm not completely on my own. Lots of messages from friends this morning and I've been talking to close friends yesterday as events were unfolding. I'll be home tomorrow afternoon. Only got a few hours sleep which doesn't help.

EnidButton · 15/07/2017 13:48

I'm so very sorry JD. Really sorry. FlowersFlowers

EnidButton · 15/07/2017 13:50

Please try to look after yourself. Get some sleep if you can. Force some water and a bit of food down. Bananas are easy to swallow if you're struggling.

yongnian · 15/07/2017 16:43

I'll be back home tomorrow night. I'm ready to get my feet on home ground and see the family.

EnidButton · 16/07/2017 00:15

A McDondalds is good. 💗 Been thinking about you. Safe journey home tomorrow.

BaliBound · 16/07/2017 13:26

I'm so sorry for your loss JDSTER.

Thanks for the HA info Bo, the Vichy Mineral 89 looks pretty ideal and exactly what I think I'm looking for and from what I can see online people are saying good things so I've ordered it. I've only used the TO HA to date so I'm really interested to see how this will compare, particularly how long it lasts. I seem to get through TO products quite quickly. I'll let you know how I find it.

ohgoonthenjustonemore · 16/07/2017 19:23

Hi, I've been lurking for a while and found some useful information but I'm after some advice.

I'm 32 and since turning 30 I've found my skin has just not been itself. I've always had combination skin but now my pores seem huge. They always had the tendency to look large around my nose but now it's my cheeks and forehead as well. I'm also having random spots where I've never had them before, my cheekbones and around my jawline, but they are red and under the skin not a head on as such. My skin just seems uneven and not as sooth as it used to be and the colour is uneven. It also seems to feel dry despite being oily in places.

Any advice??? I need a skincare overhaul....I've been browsing the ordinary and wondered if that's a good place to start? Thanks in advance

botemp · 17/07/2017 12:53

Good to hear you're settled back home, JDSTER.

Screamer1, sorry you got cut off at the end of the last thread there. Only a GP can diagnose or rule out rosacea. There are other diseases like lupus that show up as irritable redness in a certain formation on the cheeks but it could also be an allergy (usually one you've had all your life but pregnancy can resurge them, or bring them to prominence where it went unnoticed before). It does seem as if your skin issue is related to some type of internal inflammation rather than it being an isolated skin issue so from that perspective, it is worth seeking out a GP to rule anything out. In terms of actives, I'd heed caution for now (depending on whether you get it sorted with a GP or not), the only thing I'd be looking at is Niacinamide, a lower %BHA (like the PC Calm line) and a milder form of Vitamin C. Probably best to stick with mineral sunscreen so long as cheeks are irritable and avoid the more common irritants like fragrance, alcohol, colourants, essential oils, etc.

mint, it's the Ultra Facial Toner. Haven't checked the price yet but probably ridiculously expensive for what it is. It's basically Glycerin, Squalane, Phenoxyethanol, and a bit of HA and some nonsense extracts in minute amounts.

Bali, ooh exciting to get some feedback on the Vichy Mineral 89. I was planning to pick it up when I'm in Paris (provided it's cheaper or the same price as on EPP primo cheapskate here ). Have just seen Vichy is bringing out a new version of their Aqualia Thermal for extra sensitive skin. It's stripped from the common irritants that normal Aqualia was full off and promises to be chockful of Niacinamide. Unfortunately, it still has fragrance in it, so will have to see what it's like when I'm in France. I also recently added the Vichy thermal water on to an EPP order as I was a bit obsessed with the pretty packaging Blush and this is a bit like cursing in a church for me... but I think I like it better than the LRP thermal water Shock.

Welcome Emma8t4! It sounds like you're suffering from dehydration (hence the dry and oily all at once). It'll be exasperating the appearance of the pores as well. How big of an overhaul are we talking? Just adding products to an already well-established routine to target specific needs or is nothing really working for you? In either situation, you're best off adding a hydrating product and getting on the SPF train if you haven't yet. You can then consider further steps with other actives depending on how well your skin reacts to the added hydration.

emma8t4 · 17/07/2017 13:44

thanks botemp I'm thinking major overhaul. Full new regime current stuff is running out anyway. The only stuff I don't need is make up remover as the full is 3/4 full at the min.

BaliBound · 17/07/2017 14:24

I'm excited to try it, I've only got a couple of days left on my TO so I'm going to be getting stuck right in. I did notice the aqualia thermal sensitive when I was browsing. I nearly bought the light hydration but decided to be sensible, it's on my list for future purchase. It does have fragrance but I'm not sensitive to that so as long as it doesn't smell offensive or overpowering shouldn't be a problem for me.

I bought the 89 from look fantastic, they had a Vichy sale 25% off so that was what swung it. It was about a £1 more than EPP but faster postage with no additional charge.

Tsmummy08 · 17/07/2017 16:03

JDSTER so sorry to hear about your dad... but glad you were able to be with him at the end, which must have been a comfort Flowers losing a parent sucks xx
