Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. If you wish join us on this thread I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

MAY/JUNE 2017: It’s summer and some of us are hourglasses (and otherwise beautifully shaped) that desperately need to bitch and moan about the severe lack of clothes available to us. Also, some of us are recovering from a ‘fine’ butchering to our hair. Don’t ask. Some of us suffer from all of the above. At least the weather is good, wear sunscreen.

Blimey there are lots on Amazon! Can you remember which ones you like from there please JD?

Pupsiecola · 06/06/2017 09:08

A silly question. I can't remember who uses the NIOD copper peptide serum but it's an odd colour no? Blue/purple?

I bought the Clinique TTDO in 'duty free' and used it last night. I actually really like its simplicity. I have been wondering if the EH balm is a bit rich for me. Going to go with the Clinique for a while and see. The EH balm is probably 4 5ths gone anyway.

I've just gone through my stash, which to be fair is quite minimalist anyway, but I've taken out the stuff that's almost gone and I'm not repurchasing (mainly TO Buffet and Darphin). How does this look for a routine?

AM
LRP Toleriane cleanse
TO Vit C
NIOD copper peptide serum
Cosrx moisturiser or LRP Redermic or Bioderma (latter probably use in winter more although not sure I can give up my beloved Cosrx for a whole season)

PM
Clinique TTDO

Interchanging/not on the same night:-
Acid Tone (either P50 or PC, once/twice per week)
PC Azeliac Acid
Neostrata Retinol
Body Shop moisturiser or NY oil/balm

How does that look?

Pupsiecola · 06/06/2017 09:44

Knew I'd forgotten something. Niacinamide, to be added in before last stage PM.

mintmagnummm · 06/06/2017 11:49

The amazing people at face theory sent me a complimentary clarifying cleanser to try (can't get over how great their customer care is) I used it last night (planning to only use as second cleanse in pm) had very slight tingling sensation but no stinging and no reaction yet so will keep going and see as my skin can sometimes take a while to react to something. My skin can't handle acids left on so thought maybe a rinse off version would still have some of the benefits Hmm

JDSTER · 06/06/2017 13:17

Enid I got this one (still going strong after 18 months) www.amazon.co.uk/Jasmine-Momme-Charmeuse-Pillowcase-IVORY/dp/B001R8X2V8/ref=sr_1_5?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1496750890&sr=1-5&keywords=silk+pillowcase&tag=mumsnetforum-21

pupsie. Yes NIOD copper is blue once mixed. I'm not sure about using it after Vit C though. It's water based and Deciem suggest using before any 'thicker' type formulas, like Vit C. I would feel like the copper wouldn't absorb through the Vit C. That might be rubbish but I personally don't apply anything over TO Vit C (other than light moisturiser then spf a bit later)

EnidButton · 06/06/2017 14:22

Thank you JD Smile

olderthanyouthink · 06/06/2017 14:37

bo it was a "big" plugin that had a weakness, it should have been updated but that site is written so poorly that updates pose significant problems half the time so it got left until there was no choice.

enid I had some satin (def not silk) pillow cases to help stop my hair from fuzzing overnight, it works but obviously I sill got squashed curls. I stopped using them because they were crap quality but I might buy some nicer ones.

Also, ARGH, I need to get better at not leaving stuff to the last minute!!! I bought the Vichy SS on EPP on Saturday, express shipping said arriving 7th this morning I get a notification that it's arriving on the 8th which is the day I fly -_- because of a bank holiday in France no notice on the website. Called them to tell them the order was useless (they are French on the phone btw and my french isn't good enough to complain in so it took a while to explain) i think they are going to ask DHL to return it because I won't be around to reject it.
Now I've ordered it from Escentual (it wasn't in stock on the weekend) and it should arrive tomorrow.
I got the Dutch SS on eBay (seller sells loads of varying stuff) but only had one of the smaller bottles available.

I also only just did travel insurance today, holiday clothes shopping is mostly done, I got random stuff that I need delivered yesterday and some other stuff is coming tomorrow. And then I need to buy some stuff for family to take out with me, wash some stuff and pack tonight and tomorrow night.

I am truly channeling gen. rent this month, blowing all my money on stuff rather than saving Sad

Ollivander84 · 06/06/2017 14:38

26 days post surgery and did some physio/balance work/stretches in the gym. So frustrating, I just want to lift stuff!!!

olderthanyouthink · 06/06/2017 14:41

Ps I repurchased the Superdrug hydrating serum, my face is less flakey and tight now so something's working but my nose it's still a bit shit. I'll try to something to sort that when I get back (perhaps the rainforest will help my skin out).

Pupsiecola · 06/06/2017 15:08

Good point JDSTER. I feel I need to switch sth else to the morning though otherwise not evening for all other stuff!

EnidButton · 06/06/2017 15:19

Older Where are you going to? Sounds very exciting!

You're doing well Olli 💪🏻

I bought a few bits from Boots. £130 later...Confused Didn't even get anything exciting. Cicaplast (obviously), S&G body scrub, rapidbrow and rapidlash (they're overpriced), Dior lipglow in Berry, stuff like toothpaste and savlon, er...can't remember what else but boring things.

olderthanyouthink · 06/06/2017 15:32

Enid Dominica. All a bit last minute (2weeks ago I didn't have a passport), I'm mostly too stressed out to be that excited (never been in a plane, all holidays have been as a child with my parents, within the EU etc) but I'm looking forward to it.

You just reminded me I need to buy and decant toiletries and find some ziploc bags to put it in. 😩 Am going to leave work early today I think...

EnidButton · 06/06/2017 16:16

Once you're on the plane it'll all be fine. 🍸 Sounds gorgeous!

mintmagnummm · 06/06/2017 18:46

Does anyone here use aluminium salt free deodorant? My friend swears by the Vichy 24hr dry touch one but am reluctant to order it as ones I've tried in past have been completely ineffective

RubyGoat · 06/06/2017 20:12

Yes, I use one or other of the Bionsen range. I like their roll on, & the dry stick. I don't sweat much though, it might not be enough for someone who sweats a lot.

userallusedup · 06/06/2017 20:54

JDSTER I have that exact same pillowcase from Amazon Grin I wasn't getting creases as such but my face always looked puffy and a bit sort of crumpled in the morning and it's definitely helped with that. It hasn't done much for my hair though, I have to sleep with it up in a bun otherwise it's completely wild and tatty when I wake up. They do rip after a while but that brand has lasted me longer than other ones I've tried, I've had mine over a year.

Enid I've started using LRP redermic eye cream which has a small amount of retinol, it's nice enough but not seeing much in way of results yet but it's only been about three weeks.

Talking of retinol, I've used TO 1% a few times now (I was brave and went for every second night) and so far so.....nothing. No tingling, stinging, peeling, sensitivity, absolutely nothing. Now if it works and I get results like Olli obviously this will be very good thing but I've got a suspicion that if it was going to work I'd 'feel' it by now if that makes sense. Maybe I'm just being impatient and it will take a while to kick in, I'll probably be back on here next week crying that my face is falling off Shock

EnidButton · 06/06/2017 21:47

Thanks User. I eyed (!) that LRP one up during my Boots shop but left it. Will take another look next time I'm in. Could be a good one to start with. The pillowcase is in my basket ready Smile

Might be a coincidence but my hair is getting 'dirty' sooner than it did when it was bra strap length and without so many layers. Could be the lack of Pantene clarifying shampoo, (🖕🏻to all companies who discontinue amazing products), but also wondering if I'm accidentally gwtting conditioner on the roots now it's not as long. Very annoying as I have limited energy. A twice a week wash was manageable and it was always shiny and clean with that. Now it needs every other day really. Hmmm, I'll puzzle it out.

(By 'dirty' I mean oily roots and mussed up ends instead of light roots and shiny lengths.)

EnidButton · 06/06/2017 21:49

Ah! I might have used Toni & Giy shampoo last wash instead of the Redken. Could be that.

JDSTER · 06/06/2017 21:52

user I would be exactly like you, expecting a result by now. At least if your face does fall off you'll have a soft silk pillowcase to rest on Grin.

mint I haven't got round to doing a round up of products this month but I did want to make a special mention for an aluminium free deo. Let me start by saying I've been looking for a decent one for years. Work days I couldn't get away with only wearing deodorant and had to use antiperspirant. Anyway, I saw soft and gentle aluminium free on offer in supermarket on offer and thought I'd give it a go. Verdict- for me it is brilliant! I've tried all three fragrances 'clean' is the nicest. I've even been able to wear it for work with no smell at the end of the day. Highly impressed.

Another product I'm highly impressed with is Biore UV bright milk SPF 50. (Pink bottle). This was on a review of Biore milks that Bo posted, probably as SS a few weeks ago now.
The texture is quite different to my beloved Biore watery essence. It is a milk and when I first applied it I thought it felt a bit siliconey but after a minute or so it left my skin lovely and silky but matte. There's something about it that I can't put my finger on but it does seem to brighten my skin somewhat. I've had it a good week now. A definite recommendation and dare I say it, I prefer it to watery essence. I got it on Amazon from Japan for just under £7.

mintmagnummm · 06/06/2017 21:58

Thanks lego and JDSTER I'll check those out.

userallusedup · 06/06/2017 22:40

Enid the LRP redermic eye stuff is much cheaper on Easyparapharmacie, look fantastic have it on offer at the moment as well but EPP is still cheaper. I'll give it a chance & review it again in a few weeks but it's not doing much at the moment.

JDSTER I've now got nightmare visions of my face moulting on to my lovely silk pillowcase Grin Seriously the skin on my face must be tough as old boots but my scalp and my skin from the top of my neck down is quite sensitive/reactive Confused

I'm tempted to try that Biore bright milk now, I'm really happy with the bioderma stuff I'm using but a bit of added brightness would not go amiss.

EnidButton · 06/06/2017 23:12

User Thank you Smile

yongnian · 07/06/2017 10:06

Just popping in to say I've started using LRP serozinc again after not using it for ages. Since then, I've been using LRP Toleriane Dermo cleanser. The combo of the two makes whatever I sweep off afterwards with a cotton pad, be a dirtyish kind of pink colour. So weird. It used to happen with my Uriage cleanser and serozinc, but I put that down to the fact that the cleanser was light pinkish. The toleriane cleanser is white though! So it must be some kind of chemical reaction from the serozinc....hope it's a chem combo that's beneficial! Confused

mintmagnummm · 07/06/2017 12:49

JDSTER just bought the soft and gentle aluminium free deo (I got floral) thanks for the rec.

JDSTER · 07/06/2017 17:35

Hope you like it and more importantly it works mint
user I think for the price the Biore milk use worth a try (if you don't like it you can recycle it on over to me Grin)
