Little things that mean Style Death

I read the other day that one of the worst things you can do style-wise is to miss out a belt loop on your trousers. I've never done this, but I do permanently have a hair bobble around my wrist. This is apparently a big NO. What other little things should I not be doing?

Captain Anti Fashion actually sounds like half the hipsters round here at the moment!

Missingthesea · 25/05/2017 08:41

Why do you put a hair tie/bobble on your wrist? I've never heard of this before and would love to know Smile

PaleBluePigeon · 25/05/2017 08:41

zzzzz that's exactly what I thought.

LadyAlanPartridge · 25/05/2017 08:42

Kitten heel shoes

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 25/05/2017 08:45

When someone leaves the tag on the bottom of their heels and you can see it when they are walking....
Kills the whole look
It's all in the detail Wink

TheBenignSorceress · 25/05/2017 08:46

Kitten heels are back in high fashion big time this season. Dior have done some with a fabric heel strap embossed with Dior in pretty handwriting.

Maudlinmaud · 25/05/2017 08:48

I did not know about the jacket/coat stitch and it's a thing that has bugged me for years. You just can't get a full stride with a stitch. I will remove them now.

Looking lumpy-bumpy is the biggest killer for me, whether you're a size eight or a size 18. If your waistband or bra is too tight, go up a size and it will look far, far more attractive.

seoulsurvivor · 25/05/2017 08:56

What is interesting is that in Korea (where I live) proper socks on show is style death but trainer socks are a-ok.

Herebe that woman sounds like a hipster. She'd probably look quite cool in London.

n0ne · 25/05/2017 09:03

Tights under shorts? I love to wear brown wooly tights under tweed shorts in the winter - I thought it looked cute Blush

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 25/05/2017 09:04

YouSignUp Ofcourse I would be "that" friend. I would sit you down with a cuppa and very sensitively tell you because, otherwise, I'd be too embarrassed to walk down the street with you

seoulsurvivor · 25/05/2017 09:06

n0ne I agree, I also think it looks cute. How does it look any different to tights under skirts?

Some of these are just preferences rather than actual style death

seoulsurvivor · 25/05/2017 09:09

Also I used to think lo-top trainers are style death especially New Balance. Lo and behond, EVERYONE under 30 is wearing them now.

I am officially old.

Jolie laide is a thing
Embrace it!!

blueskyinmarch · 25/05/2017 09:17

Stylish 19yo as mentioned upthread is now dressing like I did in the 80s but looks better somehow. A sort of upgraded Bananarama look. Stonewash cropped denim anyone?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 25/05/2017 09:19

What making said. Student DD1 looks like an absolute mess to me; midi skirts and trainers, gold lame disco pants and corderoy shirts, like she's just grabbed the first clothes that came to hand from a jumble sale. DD2 assures me though, that she is the epitome of cool and stylish. I'm just not seeing it myself. Bag lady chic I reckon.

specialsubject · 25/05/2017 09:23

Oh well....

Because staggering heels , huge handbags covered with logos, trousers with holes in the knees, having a face like a slapped arse because you are freezing, boiling or soaked but oh so fashionable is such a good look.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 25/05/2017 09:28

Bluesky DD2 (18) is definitely channelling Siobhan Fahey these days: all dungarees and stripey tops. I must did out some old photos of myself at that age to mortify her (I had better hair Grin).

5moreminutes · 25/05/2017 09:29

Missingthesea you put a hair bobble on your wrist in case you need to tie your hair up obviously, for example if you want your long hair down but there is a chance you may be eating an ice cream cone outdoors on a breezy day :o Its not a style choice, more of an I don't want my hair up all day but also don't want hair in my mouth choice...

MoominFlaps · 25/05/2017 09:32

I find these threads hilarious as I always do about 50% of the things mentioned Blush

I LIVE in leggings. What else am I supposed to wear? Tights? Bleugh. Jeans? Double bleugh.

MoominFlaps · 25/05/2017 09:34

Oh and I also wear midi skirts with trainers. I do not own a single pair of "proper" shoes. Just converse Blush. And flip flops for the summer.

Missingthesea · 25/05/2017 09:37

5moreminutes Thank you, I didn't think of that Blush When my hair was long i usually tied it back first thing in the morning, but I probably had a hair bobble in my pocket if I wore my hair loose (quite a long time ago now so I can't remember!)

changingShorts · 25/05/2017 09:38

I once had a boss who refused to employ someone because he'd turned up to an interview with white socks. Reasonable.

Things for me: any hanger loops or other clothes labels showing; if you're wearing something where bra straps might show (e.g. a vest top) the bra straps must match the garment; labels on shoes; a bag that doesn't match the rest of the outfit (just get a black one); fleecy tops or gillets unless you are walking a dog in the countryside.

Oh, and n0ne, tights under shorts is absolutely fine and stylish.
