I thought she was too thin for the dress - I'm a size 10

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 21/05/2017 23:09

What's with the 'too thin'?

Pippa is not 'too thin', she is slim - a slim, healthy woman.

Theycalledmethewildrose · 21/05/2017 23:30

I imagine anyone that calls anyone "too thin" rather than slim, is fat.

Grin

Reminds me of a family member who resents anybody who goes on a diet/loses a few pounds and insists on calling them 'scrawny and miserable'.

nina2b · 21/05/2017 23:48

What a strange conclusion to reach. The word "thin" is neutral in much the same way that walked is. It is pretty much devoid of connotations.

chickpeaburger · 22/05/2017 00:17

nina2b - Thin is the opposite of fat.

chickpeaburger · 22/05/2017 00:18

Thin is neutral........hah...never heard such rubbish before.

Nina2b REALLY??

CricketRuntAndRashers · 22/05/2017 00:21

Thin may be neutral, depending on the context. But 'too thin'?

chickpeaburger · 22/05/2017 00:24

I'm a size 10. Have been since I knew what that was. I'm now 50+.

I eat more than my husband who is an athlete. I'm lazy. That's the way I'm built.

In times of extreme anguish/grief I have lost weight as have been unable to eat and to hear people tell me I look "thin" is not nice.

I would never, ever, ever say to someone they looked "fat". Rude and inappropriate however it seems to be acceptable to say someone looks thin.

Blueink · 22/05/2017 00:25

"for the heaviness of the dress" being the point some of us were making. It's not a delicate lace and there is a lot of material in the skirt, high neck. Is does not flatter her. It's an opinion on the dress. Nice on someone else, boring and unflattering on her. Careful chickpea and pizza or we might eat you Wink

Dozer · 22/05/2017 08:21

We don't know pippa's BMI, but like many other women in the public eye it could well be under 18, so too thin in medical terms.

TatianaLarina · 22/05/2017 08:50

I think the lace is delicate.

The dress has a full skirt, but that's not 'unflattering' that's just a classic look. It has tiny waist and a closely fitted bodice, I think it's very flattering on her.

Sconesnotscones · 22/05/2017 09:20

"Must say groom not much of a looker is he?"
I think he looks a bit like a more polished Robert Carlyle in the Hamish Mabeth era - and people thought Robert Carlyle was gorgeous. (I wasn't a fan, especially after I started reading the books)

Actually, he's be'd probably be a better Hamish Macbeth - he's closer to 6'4" that the character is.

nina2b · 22/05/2017 10:19

Some posters need to revise the idea of the connotation of words. The word "skinny" seems negative to me but kids I teach think it is the ultimate compliment. The word "thin", however, is neither particularly negative nor positive. It is neutral.

Isn't language fascinating?

GeorgiePeachie · 22/05/2017 10:53

I did not love it! Am I the only one? I think it looks kind of cheap with the bobbly lace all over it. quite flattering but meh it swallows her.

LaLegue · 22/05/2017 11:14

My wedding dress had a guipure lace bodice and sleeves, it was beautiful. It's a very classy, classic fabric and it's not 'heavy' or thick or bobbly at all, it just has some body to it so works well for a design structure.

I have seen wedding dresses that completely swamp the bride (Kim Sears a case in point) but I don't think it applies in Pippa's case, she looked amazing. The dress was perfect.

LaLegue · 22/05/2017 11:15

a design with structure that should have said

CricketRuntAndRashers · 22/05/2017 11:19

La

Yes, Kim Sears did probably regret that dress.... But I do quite really like the sleeves.

ExConstance · 22/05/2017 11:23

I thought the dress was beautiful, it didn't look too heavy to me, the bodice was very flattering and the fullness of the skirt showed off her slender waist to perfection. Slender small breasted people suit high necks and this design really suited her. She looked very pretty without showing too much flesh , which is very inappropriate in a church setting. She looked so happy, as did Kate.

LaLegue · 22/05/2017 11:28

I agree Ex I am sick to the back teeth of seeing brides going up the aisle with their top half looking like they are doing glamour modelling. Especially if they er....can't really carry off that look at the best of times.

I like a bit of cleavage as much as the next girl but it's got right out of hand. Jordan and Victoria Beckham have got a lot to answer for. And I can't TELL you how relieved I am to see sleeves / shoulders back in fashion. Strapless was lovely for a while but then got boring boring boring. Even single bride looked exactly the flipping same for about 15 years.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 22/05/2017 12:28

I love guipure lace. That is all.

Blueink · 22/05/2017 14:55

Unlike her sister, IMO Pippa lacks a sense of style, so agree the dress was a 'safe' (albeit boring) option. Lace detail OR lace all over with less material would have worked better on her frame. I do like the lace itself, however the overall effect of the dress is heavy, dull and ageing on her. Some others think it suits her, so to each their own. Rumours she was following a very restrictive diet in the lead up, if true, probably didn't help by the time she got to the actual day of wearing it. Anyway, it's just a dress and one day, wishing them a happy married life, which is the important bit!

nina2b · 22/05/2017 15:33

She looks sulky and he looks at a loss. Poor guy.

The body language speaks volumes.

PollyPerky · 22/05/2017 15:37

This will run and run until she's pregnant, then it will be all the papers etc. I'm so tired of her. All she has done with her life (apart from the charity stuff which I applaud) is be the little sister of the woman who married the heir to the throne. She's had no real career of her own (her books fell flat- no one bought them) but a very privileged life (I'm not jealous- the Middletons worked for it) . She is just like many many middle class 'gels' whose parents dosh gave her a good start in life enabling her to mix with the monied types in London.

HappyAxolotl · 22/05/2017 15:55

Really? I thought they just looked plain-old tired-out and they probably were by that point.
