Mutton as lamb?

LobsterQuadrille · 17/05/2017 21:21

I'm 47. I'm going out tomorrow evening - context - art exhibition, quite smart/casual which I always have issues with.

Any advice? It doesn't feel quite right and I don't know why. Maybe too young?

Mutton as lamb?

No I dont think so. Looks nice.

pictish · 17/05/2017 21:28

Honestly I'm not going to say it's mutton as lamb because I don't subscribe to that rubbish but I will say it's a bit naff. So sorry. Not to my taste at all...like that matters.

pictish · 17/05/2017 21:29

The camisole underneath looks too short for you.

emmeline7725 · 17/05/2017 21:30

Personally I think you have nailed smart casual. I don't think your age is relevant. You look lovely.

hahahaIdontgetit · 17/05/2017 21:33

I think you look fine, the top in black would be better ?

Maudlinmaud · 17/05/2017 21:33

Where did you get the top? It's exactly what I'm looking for. I think you look lovely, hate the phrase mutton.

LobsterQuadrille · 17/05/2017 21:37

I hate the phrase mutton too; I meant is it too young. Top is all one - no camisole - and from Top Shop. Maybe pictish has said what's in the back of my mind ... naff. I can't find another top that goes though. Jeans are too casual. I'm not buying anything just for a few hours.

Thank you for all opinions!

Black bottoms and white top is always a bit waitressy looking, I think that's the problem.
Have you got an LBD? Is usually be possible to smart-casual-ise them.

Neverknowing · 17/05/2017 21:51

I think you look gorgeous!! You have an amazing figure btw.

MaisyPops · 17/05/2017 21:53

Looks nice. Personally I'd want the camisole inside to be longer as it looks a bit short to me (but you've sad it's all in one).
Not mutton at all. (I do hate it, but there are cases where I find myself thinking "really?" at times. It's bad but at least I'm being honest that I have moments like that)

LobsterQuadrille · 17/05/2017 21:56

I've found something else that I have hastily stuck in the washing machine. It's longer - I think aside from the black/white look, I feel a bit exposed and hippy. But thanks to all confirming my not quite comfortable feeling.

I think you look fab

Whiterabbitears · 17/05/2017 22:16

You have a great figure Smile I think the problem is the length of the cami, its too short. If the cami was longer and the whole thing in black it would be better.

gonegrey56 · 17/05/2017 22:18

Well I think you look lovely !

Alexandra87 · 17/05/2017 22:20

You look great. I would need a longer top to be comfortable though

PickAChew · 17/05/2017 22:21

I hate the phrase mutton as lamb but the top is simply the wrong colour and style for you. You have an amazing figure but need something softer and drapier.

LobsterQuadrille · 17/05/2017 22:21

Thank you!

As above, the top is all in one so not much I can do about the bottom layer. I think I've discarded that idea in favour of a strappy longer top (in washing machine) plus jacket.

OP posts:
LobsterQuadrille · 17/05/2017 22:22

Drapier is exactly what I want.

geniusindisguise · 17/05/2017 22:25

That top would look great with a midi length pleated flared skirt and heels.

Summer23 · 17/05/2017 22:30

I know you've changed your mind now but just wanted to say you look great in that outfit. I don't think the vest looks too short, you have the figure to pull it off. Age is just a number 😉

SirVixofVixHall · 17/05/2017 22:32

I agree that the short lining in the top is the issue. You could wear it over a longer camisole also in white, to disguise the short lining. Or, as you seem to want to do, wear something different on top. The see-through tummy gap cheapens the top, and makes it look more teenage than the actual style of it suggests.

Fortifiedwithvitaminsandiron · 17/05/2017 22:35

Gosh, surprised by some of the comments here as I think you look absolutely lovely! I agree if it were me, the camisole underneath could be longer but that's purely because I don't have your tummy! You look lovely OP and you look fabulous at 47 xx

WhataHexIgotinto · 17/05/2017 22:50

I think you look great.

LobsterQuadrille · 18/05/2017 07:42

Thank you! I do agree about the top and, although I love the top, the outfit doesn't seem to go and that's why I was feeling mildly uneasy in it.
