Mutton as lamb?

LobsterQuadrille · 17/05/2017 21:21

I'm 47. I'm going out tomorrow evening - context - art exhibition, quite smart/casual which I always have issues with.

Any advice? It doesn't feel quite right and I don't know why. Maybe too young?

Plan B ....

Mutton as lamb?

That's nicer! You have the sort of figure that would look good in a sack, though. Envy

buggerthebotox · 18/05/2017 08:35

I think the neck is better on outfit two, which makes it look somehow more elegant....not sure what I mean by elegant btw.

LobsterQuadrille · 18/05/2017 08:37

buggerthebotox thank you - I think I'm going with this. And you must be kidding?! Nothing on top, kind of skinny and hippy at the same time!

Love the pink. Have a great time!

BigGreenOlives · 18/05/2017 08:39

You look gorgeous in both. Enjoy.

LobsterQuadrille · 18/05/2017 08:40

Thank you! My trademark is lipstick exactly this colour as well so I feel more comfortable to start with.

Stunning!

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 18/05/2017 08:44

You look absolutely fabulous. That is all.

borntobequiet · 18/05/2017 08:45

I had a younger colleague with a figure like yours, she always looked stunning, whenever I asked where she had got her dress/jacket/top/ skirt from it turned out to be Asda. She had a good eye though!
Get a LBD from Asda or some such and wheel it out on these occasions.

Okite · 18/05/2017 08:47

Agree with everyone else, you have a fab figure and look great in both outfits. I do like the pink in the second. Have a fun night!

LobsterQuadrille · 18/05/2017 08:48

All three items come from Top Shop, the top two in the sales for less than £10 so Asda sounds good to me.

Thanks for the feedback - this site has been really useful since October when DD went to university!

Second outfit looks much better and pink jacket makes a run of the mill outfit a little bit quirky/standout. Enjoy your do!

olderthanyouthink · 18/05/2017 09:08

Plan B is much better

BitOutOfPractice · 18/05/2017 09:15

You look great in both shots.

And bugger this "too young" shit. I'm approaching my 50th in whatever the fuck I like!

LobsterQuadrille · 18/05/2017 09:19

Bitoutofpractice I have a 19 year old DD who occasionally reminds me that I'm not a teenager any more. She does it very diplomatically and kindly, which makes it worse! Otherwise I agree with you and I'll be 48 in a couple of months so not long to wait Smile

changingShorts · 18/05/2017 09:31

What BitOut said. I am also nearer 50 than 40 and will wear what I like.

"Mutton" is a horrible phrase. You look good in both pictures, OP. Great figure. Marginally prefer shot 2 (better neckline) but shot 1 was good too.

SixtiesChildOfWildBlueSkies · 18/05/2017 09:34

I'm an artist, I go to a lot of art exhibitions/private views. I wear whatever I want, and so should you, never mind wearing what you THINK you should, wear what you WANT to, so blow the 'mutton/lamb' thing.. You have a fab figure, enjoy showing it off....and by the way I'm 10 years older than you,

misscph1973 · 18/05/2017 09:34

OP, both outfits are great, very flattering, but I can I am guessing from your body language (arms tight to your sides) that you are not comfortable. Just relax, you have a fantastic figure! Take a good look in the mirror, and just enjoy how beautiful you are.

I think with age it gets harder to dress! There seems to be so little in the shops that isn't too young, too old or too mumsy. I'm 44, and I am really struggling. Most of the time I just want to stay at home in my PJs.

LobsterQuadrille · 18/05/2017 09:51

misscph ha, I had to revisit my photographs to check my arm positioning! It's that I am uncomfortable taking "selfies" as I never do it and am not sure where to place the phone more than anything else!

And yes, I should just wear what I want, I know. It's just been DD and me for 19 years and I'd fallen into a lazy habit of asking her opinion before going out - she has a good eye and is honest. I know I shouldn't need the approval of others ..... but I suppose I do!

Bambambini · 18/05/2017 09:51

Thing is OP, you still have the figure for age group that top shop, new look etc aim at. Many of us inbour 40's and 50's don't and the clothes just don't sit right.

LobsterQuadrille · 18/05/2017 11:50

bambini unfortunately it doesn't mean I look right in their clothes though. Often too short and/or revealing. My DM is the same shape as me and is a sprightly 86 and sales assistants are always trying to sell her clothes that look ridiculous.

OP posts:
AtlantaGinandTonic · 18/05/2017 12:07

OP you look lovely in that outfit so I say wear it! I'd be well pleased if I looked like that when I'm your age (am 33 now)! As for 'mutton as lamb', nobody bats an eye when Halle Berry dresses in 'young' clothes at the age of 50 so I think we should wear what we are comfy wearing!!

Iamthinking · 18/05/2017 12:10

I am very jealous of your lovely thin ankles.

bingolittle · 18/05/2017 12:12

I have an art exhibition to go to soon and I'm starting to wonder what to wear.

If I saw someone there looking like your photos then I would feel utterly envious!
