Sali Hughes on high street fashion for women over 35

elotrolado · 17/05/2017 12:35

Just read this - so true.

www.the-pool.com/fashion/fashion-honestly/2017/20/sali-hughes-on-the-british-high-street-dressing-women-over-35

I too long for those 'flattering frocks, neat at the shoulders, sleeves and neck, but with enough fabric around the middle to invisibly accommodate a bottle of red and more than 19 calories ...'

Why is the Cotton suddenly being mixed with modal? Anyone else noticed this? Is it more sweaty.

champagnecyclist · 20/05/2017 17:05

Just found this thread and SH, wow I thought I was the only one wondering who is buying all the crappy see-through t-shirts on the high street... and that includes Gap, I tried on a bunch of their tops a couple of weeks ago and they weren't decent, I might as well just go out in my underwear. Quality is awful unless you want some floral dress only fit for a summer wedding.

DirtyDancing · 20/05/2017 17:46

Jaeger is literally the only shop I can buy stuff in. It's not cheap, but it's excellent quality and has amazing sales

Therealslimshady1 · 20/05/2017 18:10

I used to live in Esprit as a teen/early 20s so feel I have "outgrown it" , to me ot is 80s teenage fashion Grin

Missingthesea · 20/05/2017 18:14

I thought Jaeger had gone into administration, or has it been rescued )I hope it has been.)?
The Jaeger store at Bluewater is certainly closed, as far as I could see when I was there last week.

Missingthesea · 20/05/2017 18:15

I mean, I hope it's been rescued!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 20/05/2017 18:44

Modal is a form of viscose. It has really good draping properties. But it's much cheaper than cotton, so hence the mix.

It's sweaty nasty fabric made from wood pulp. High street likes to let on that's its natural like cotton or stuff. It's natural in so far the base material is natural, but it has a ton of chemicals added to it.

DirtyDancing · 20/05/2017 18:44

Jaeger online is up & running and they have just released a new reward scheme. I might take out a loan and buy everything just in case tho!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 20/05/2017 18:47

I cannot think of any area where viscose is beter than cotton, except perhaps the drape. It's cheap, limp, tears really easily, and creases like shit,

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 20/05/2017 18:51

I was a ladies wear designer for years. I'm sure I mentioned it up thread. All the industry cares about is profit.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 20/05/2017 18:55

I'm not sure ruffles and bows are that cheap to produce. They can use more fabric than the actual garment, especially these huge flared sleeves that are everywhere. A lot of them are cut in circular shape and that wastes a lot of fabric.

PacificDogwod · 20/05/2017 19:00

I have a very tailored suit jacket that my mother bought for me when I graduated in 1992.
It remains a Thing of Beauty and I continue to wear it.
It's a silk/wool blend by a fancy-pants Italian designer and if I consider cost-per-wear it was dirt cheap.

I wish we could go back to that kind of shopping.
I hate 'disposable fashion'.

expatinscotland · 20/05/2017 19:07

Everything I've seen in the shops so far this year looks like it's been made for my 11-year-old daughter - no hips, no tits.

hollyisalovelyname · 20/05/2017 19:16

Carolyn Donnelly's The Edit at Dunnes Stores does Cos like clothes.
Also Paul Costelloe has a Diffusion line.
Their Savida range is good too, good designs, younger but probably not as many natural fabrics
Sorry I can't do links-

expat, "Eine Figur wie Schneewittchen, kein Arsch und kein Tittchen".

Google Translate will tell you what I am on about.

Apologies to anyone offended - I've had too much Prosecco Grin

Want2bSupermum · 20/05/2017 19:23

I agree with Reiker shoes. They used to be great but now it's a plastic liner so my feet get too hot.

I'm lucky I'm in the US and enough of middle America still have fat feet. Naturalizer, Aerofoot (I think that is what they are called) and easy spirit have a couple of pairs which fit. Only huge downside is that they are old lady shoes.

I buy a lot of clothes from a new place called MM LaFleur. It's a NYC based company and they make clothes here in the US. It's $350 for a dress but the quality is great. I have 5 dresses from there and after 2 years they are still in great shape.

expatinscotland · 20/05/2017 19:24

Grin! And I didn't need Google translate. I'm off the sauce tonight because, well, that was last night Wink.

PacificDogwod · 20/05/2017 19:29
Grin

I was stonecoldsober last night
Grin

Floisme · 20/05/2017 19:52

We can go back Pacific you can still find the most beautiful vintage tailored jackets from the 40s/50s/60s. They're not even that expensive cos all the young people are fighting over the 70s and 80s shit. Grin

expatinscotland · 20/05/2017 20:16

I was tanked last night Grin, and I was wearing a crap tshirt I bought on a cruise ship and 5-year-old trousers because all the clothes in the high street suck.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 20/05/2017 20:23

I'm quite impressed with that Dunnes stuff😵

PacificDogwod · 20/05/2017 20:36

Flo, my much beloved jacket is from 1992, so not that old Blush

Lucked · 20/05/2017 22:52

Dunnes is now being added to the list. They have nailed the pink dress with fluted sleeves that M&S buggered up.

PassiveAggressiveLunchbox · 20/05/2017 23:10

Hate to say it, but the Paul Costello range in Dunnes is hideously overpriced. That range and Lennon Courtney are almost pure polyester. Very disappointing for the price tags IMO.

PickAChew · 20/05/2017 23:27

Even Zara have knocked the socks off M&S offering with the brightly coloured floaty polyester. Their window display, when I passed, today, was quite attractive, even if I'd never wear a lemon yellow polyester pleated skirt in a million years.

This mind, is ready made for sitting in a gutter full of puke in the Bigg Market at 11pm.
