Sali Hughes on high street fashion for women over 35

Just read this - so true.

www.the-pool.com/fashion/fashion-honestly/2017/20/sali-hughes-on-the-british-high-street-dressing-women-over-35

I too long for those 'flattering frocks, neat at the shoulders, sleeves and neck, but with enough fabric around the middle to invisibly accommodate a bottle of red and more than 19 calories ...'

It may not be cutting edge fashion, but Woolovers have started doing a range of clothing that's not knitwear, in natural fabrics at OK prices.

Thank you Tisgrand and I meant to thank holly who also suggested a work-around to me.... I have now signed up for the An
Post thing which delivers from the UK to my local post office for €3.95, I used it when I made my Poetry order. I should have done it years ago! As an aside, is Brexit going to bugger up our online shopping
I wonder?

Just to say Mintychops that delivery to Ireland needn't cost so much. If you sign up to Parcel Motel and buy from websites that do free UK delivery, they give you a NI address and then deliver to one of their drop zones for about 3-4 euro. I don't know about the rest of the country but is v convenient if you live in Dublin.

But to me, all those esprit tops are completely shapeless. The shops are full of this stuff straight up and down stuff. I want tips that have a fitted shape. A waist. And / or a bust.

I'd recommend Esprit, as well. They have lots of stuff in cotton, their viscose is the better kind of viscose, IYSWIM, and their stuff usually washes and lasts well.
This is fairly classic, but well cut, and has been complimented (sorry, French website, as I'm in a hurry, but you can find the stuff on the UK version).
This kind of style and this, too are what I wear to work. I don't work in a v formal environment, though, but these are a good halfway between relaxed and workwear for me.
They have a good range of jeans, too, organised by cut (disclaimer: I've not actually looked at the UK website, but am presuming it's the same as the French one).
I'm currently wearing a pair of their linen trousers, in a jeans cut rather than the ubiquitous saggy, baggy style with an elastic waist, that I bought 4 years ago, and they are great.

So the Wrap tops I paid £18 to have delivered to Ireland were..... TOO BLOODY SHORT! So, so annoying. I actually measured them and they were about 3.5 cm shorted than the website described. After several phone calls they say they will refund my postage both for having them sent to me and for returning them. It's so disappointing though, they were lovely quality apart from that.

I have ordered a few tops from Poetry instead and they are PERFECT, long enough, comfortable, look great. Thank you to everyone who mentioned them!

I still can't find any tops for work though. I need tops that are smart casual. Somewhere between a t-shirt but not a fully button up shirt or blouse with a collar. It's a relief to find this thread because my DH thinks the problem is me I'm forever ordering clothes and shoes and sending them back - then complaining always that I have nothing to wear. I want to see clothes that I love again. Instead I walk around department stores looking for some things that 'will do' and buying the best of the bunch, only to not particularly like it. I could throw my whole wardrobe away tomorrow and would only miss a few items. But I can't do that because I'd only be able to replace it with more 'that'll do' items that I am forced to buy because I have to wear something.

I've not bought anything from Seasalt for a few years but the 3 tops I do have still look as good as new and wash wonderfully. I'll have to try their actual shop because I am also put off by the catalogue and online modeling.

Someone up thread mentioned Espirit and I have recently bought two cotton t-shirts from them. One is a plain white which is thick and NOT see through. The other has a bit of shaping around the bust.

I have a t-shirt from TU which is organic cotton. I bought it years ago to wear for sports and I now wear it with PJ bottoms. I noticed how good the quality and shape is this morning. It's a long time since I have seen anything like that in Sainsburys.

On the back of this thread, I ordered some Seasalt tops (need new tees)

They were all boxy and unflattering, straight up and down

Lovely fabric and well made, but not suited to someone with a waist and hips...

Dammit Wink

Does anyone know where to buy tees that are a bit more fitted? I know it is not the fashion at the mo....

Seasalt makes me look like a giant toddler. Grin
Well , I'm over 60 , so maybe going back to childhood!

Seasalt makes me look like a giant toddler.

They used to do children's clothes, which were fabulous, and looked exactly like their adult stuff but smaller.

I have some Seasalt striped tops that are ten years old and still going strong.

Good to hear about the sailor tops - Pick thats one of the things I bought.
I am tall and very hour glass- with slightly bigger hips, and the size was true, and skimmed me well. I don't know about frumpy I did try stuff on that just didn't suit with some of the designs.
But I am a sucker for stripes, and the feel of the material made me smile -

While the cut usually works on my, slimshady - I'm quite narrow in the body relative to clothes size and the shoulders on their clothes sit right on me, while many places have them too bloody wide.

As for washing, I had one top which was a nightmare and the second time I burnt myself trying to iron it, I chucked it on the charity shop pile because it was starting to pill, anyhow. They've completely discontinued that one. I have a couple of their sailor tops which will probably last forever. They wash much nicer than my Boden breton, which is full of holes.

I guess I'd thought the same but I tried on a couple of things and was pleasantly surprised. I wouldn't wear it head to toe - any more than I would most brands - but I'll look out for individual pieces. I think the way the high street is now, it's better not to rule anywhere out.

Seasalt look really frumpy on me!

Not sure why, the cut makes me look shapeless I think

Report
Floisme · 03/06/2017 18:32

Yeah I'd always dismissed Seasalt as not being my kind of look but I don't think their catalogue or website does them justice. In real life, I've seen quite a few things I like. They look good quality and use a lot of natural fabrics, including organic cotton. And they seem to have an ethical compass too. I'll definitely take a closer look.

I don't know if its been mentioned up thread, but have just , for the first time, been into Seasalt ( new shop opened near me) - Came out with 4 things, could have bought more .
Slightly casual, but lovely thick cotton jersey - a skirt, a jersey dress and two different tunics
I quizzed the lady behind the counter on the tunic she was wearing about wash and wear. worn and washed at least 10 time, looked just like on the hangar. So fingers crossed I have found somewhere to go.
They had a lot to like for me.

Sadly Sweden is so homogenous that all shops really do have the same,so I'm finding nothing. Same colours, same styles. All jeans now are ripped and faded, there is nothing dark and plain for example.

Report
Floisme · 02/06/2017 11:24

Nah, still not feeling the rage. I'm managing to find stuff without ruffles whereas all trousers/jeans were insanely low waisted for a while.

In fact I will go further. I think a gently flared sleeve, provided it finishes well clear of the wrist, can look quite nice Shock What's more, it doesn't require the said arm to be young or thin. It's the fact that the sleeve will almost certainly be polyester that pisses me off far more.

However I'm not a fan of summer clothes anyway so my expectations are always low. If it carries on into the autumn, you may see me starting to get grumpy.
