Are Style bloggers wealthy as a result of their blogs or do only wealthy women actually blog in the first place?

Just wondering really as every single style blog I come across is written by someone who appears to have pots of cash and thinks an item reduced to £200 from £300 is a 'bargain'?

I seriously can't get over the amount most of them seem to spend on clothes!

Sorry re typos. Blush

homebythesea · 14/05/2017 08:25

MaQueen we clearly have a different view on good manners.

ElspethFlashman · 14/05/2017 09:04

If you're curious about a blogger who loves really fugly shoes, check out Honey Belle. I like her, she's very funny. But sweet baby Jesus, her shoe collection is hideous. Hoof shoes, the lot of them.

TheBogQueen · 14/05/2017 09:51

I think if you put yourself out there as a blogger, then facing criticism is part of the job.

I've never looked at a fashion blog, ever, so thankyou ladies for highlighting some of them. It helps me make sense of high street fashion which at 43 I find utterly, utterly confusing.
I rush-bought some black work trousers from Zara the other day, put them on at work (long story) and then had to check with younger colleague about style and fit Confused so many pleats and so much fabric at front! Finishing calf length! It's like Bananarama C.1983Shock But the alternative was those awful wide legged trousers. And appliqué.And FLORALS FFS.

So yes I need help.

EnidButton · 14/05/2017 16:35

I thought I was pretty good at clothes until this season TheBog. I'm completely baffled by the weird shapes, or lack of shape, the ruffles, the pleats, the huge amounts of fabric. Oh god, and the prints! I don't get any of it. Confused

MaQueen · 14/05/2017 18:25

Nothing wrong with my manners home. Unless of course, you believe that millions of people are being incredibly ill mannered, all the time, on the internet?

veryveryquietly · 14/05/2017 20:23

My body shape and size, my income, and my life are all completely unlike DMBL40's, but I love reading her blog. I think she does a great job translating what's in the shops and what's new for real life readers, and even though she clearly is quite well off herself, she gives examples at tons of price points, from scary expensive to middle class somewhat affordable. It's pretty interesting seeing how the same idea (folk floral, midi dresses etc etc) gets done by different shops. Even if the actual clothes she features wouldn't fit or look good on short fat me, it gives me ideas about what's current and how to style it.

It's also clear she really works hard at maintaining the blog, as her entries are much longer, more thorough, and more frequent than the vast majority of those out there, and I think it's pretty easy for the reader to tell what is sponsored and what isn't. In short, I'm glad if she earns money from the blog- it's clear she works pretty hard on the whole thing.

Plus, she won my readership forever with this post (see the picture 3rd from the end). I've frequently laughed myself silly in the dressing room over how badly something fits, and I love that she revealed just such a moment when most bloggers are seemingly obsessed with taking perfect selfies in their boring interchangeable lives.

CrispyBathTowel · 14/05/2017 20:26

DB40 is certainly the blogger who posts most regularly - you can pretty much guarantee that there will be a daily post. She's certainly dedicated and it must be time-consuming.

homebythesea · 14/05/2017 20:26

My comment about manners MaQueen was referring to your statement that you would happily say to someone's face that you thought they were frumpy.

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 14/05/2017 20:28

I don't think many people would tell somebody else that they looked frumpy to their face unless you specifically asked for that information.

MaQueen · 14/05/2017 20:50

Like I said home the Internet is filled with millions of people observing that they find someone/something frumpy, dull, stupid, irritating, pompous (and umpty zillion more 'less-than'nice' adjectives).

And, yes, if I was asked by the MidLifeChic woman if I thought her style was 'too frumpy' for me, I would have to agree with her.

Because it is. And I would have a problem with her telling me she disliked 'my' style.

CountFosco · 14/05/2017 21:39

veryveryquietly Love that Bum40 post. OMG her knees! She regularly makes me laugh out loud at her posts, at Christmas time her lack of present wrapping made me feel a little bit better about myself. I'm short and curvy so apart from my bargainatious leather jacket from La Redoute she recommended during the sales I've not bought much inspired by her (whereas fellow shorties SusieSoSo and TheFashionLift are dangerous for me) but she is the most readable blogger I read.

I do like MidLifeChic, I think she's said before that as a size 12 she's actually quite large for a blogger (!) but I think that's helpful to the reader, someone who is tall and thin looks good in everything, it says everything about fashion that MLC who clearly has a great body (her legs in the shorts in the M&S holiday post are enviable) can look frumpy at times. But she writes better than most bloggers and is more thoughtful about this stage of life which is nice to read. I think she gets a hard time really, she's worked in fashion all her life but now lives in a small village in the north where high fashion is not appropriate. Think her blog is actually more realistic for a lot of readers than some of the others.

chloechloe · 14/05/2017 22:00

quietly I've been converted to DMBL40's blog by that photo now, it's hysterical! It's refreshing when a blogger is prepared to post a photo like that when many only post what is picture perfect.

EnidButton · 14/05/2017 22:05

Cried laughing at that knees photo. Grin

CointreauVersial · 14/05/2017 22:59

I find a lot of inspiration from 40+ blogs - seeing someone who is a similar age/lifestyle/size to me wearing something I can buy on the High Street, or recreate from my own wardrobe, is much more useful than leafing through a glossy mag full of skinny models. I'm really not bothered whether or not they are wearing freebies, although some are clearly wearing items they'd never look twice at if they weren't being sponsored, and aren't very good at hiding the fact!

The writing is quite important, though - both DMBL40 and MidLifeChic write beautifully and really engage you. I feel like I know them! Whereas MyMidlifeFashion.....nice clothes, but her writing is littered with cliches and random apostrophes, and is devoid of personality.

Someone mentioned "larger" bloggers - one who springs to mind is The Edited. She's maybe a 14?? Not so large really. But she dresses to flatter her shape, and always looks fabulous.

The Frugality clearly has some freebies in her wardrobe, but I love the fact that she is doing up her wreck of a house on a shoestring. It just shows what you can do with very little.

ElspethFlashman · 14/05/2017 23:05

Yes I think DMBL40 genuinely has ZERO vanity. Bless her cotton socks. I'd love to go for a drink with her, she's hilarious.

Her Instagram is very funny. You can see how she is so prolific though on her Insta Stories as she's a ball of slightly manic energy. Mile a minute!

MaQueen · 14/05/2017 23:06

To be honest, I'm really not bothered about bloggers musings on life. I'm all about the clothes.

ElspethFlashman · 14/05/2017 23:08

I forgot about the Edited. I deleted her last year when she seemed to be stuck in a "voluminous" style rut. But she seems to have dialed it back a bit so I'll have another look as she is in the middle size wise to be sure.

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 14/05/2017 23:08

@CointreauVersial I mentioned bloggers for larger sizes. I will check it out.

leghoul · 14/05/2017 23:29

A bunch of these were on MN previously (maybe occasionally still are) & shopping the same pre-blog & discussing it but blogging it is a smarter way of doing it.

AspasiaFitzgibbon · 15/05/2017 08:13

Oh yes, I like The Edited too. Her design posts especially.

mrsmildred · 15/05/2017 09:02

@Tw1nsetAndPearls try fashionfoiegras too

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 15/05/2017 11:38

@mrsmildred thankyou

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 15/05/2017 11:41

@mrsmildred fashionfoiegras is very me. I have wondered whether to dress in a more muted fashion but she does lift your soul. Thankyou

mrsmildred · 15/05/2017 11:47

@Tw1nsetAndPearls yes, I've only seen her Instagram feed, but she's very bright and cheery. Lots of different outfit styles too, she doesn't stick to one look.
