Has wearing a fascinator for wedding guests had it's day now?

Just as the title really. I've not worn one for the past two weddings I've been to, just a small sparkly hairband or clip. I'm seeing fewer & fewer of them now too on younger guests. Are they passé? Shall I wear a big fabulous one on Saturday to a civil ceremony? I feel like I might be self conscious.

She's married to the future king of England not Jay Z.

Alright thora hird

woodhill · 30/04/2017 22:20

I was MOB last year and wore a fascinator. It felt more comfortable than a hat. No one else apart from mil wore head gear. I like them and will probably wear one to other dds wedding this year.

Also they are more affordable than hats, is that the snobbery on this thread. Each to their own.

Trills · 30/04/2017 22:23

It's not that. Much cheaper I imagine.

ihatethecold · 30/04/2017 22:27

The snobbery is depressing.

GoatsFeet · 30/04/2017 22:48

Or -

the bad taste is depressing.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 30/04/2017 23:02

Well I mean 5ft 2 and petite. I look ridiculous in hats, they drown me, so I do wear fascinators to weddings.
I really don't care if some people think they are naff. Nobody but a rude arse would tell me they think I look naff, I'm not going to know am I?
Wear what you like OP. Ignore the HATersWink

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 30/04/2017 23:15

I clearly have no taste or fashion sense because I like fascinators - the bigger and featherier the better. On other people, anyway. On me, they look weird. In the photos of the last wedding I went to, I look like I've headbutted a small bird of prey.

Mrstumbletap · 02/05/2017 00:03

Why do you think you have good taste Goatsfeet?

Do you believe you are more stylish than the Dutchess?

Nettletheelf · 02/05/2017 00:19

If you mean Fergie (the pop star pea, not the former Mrs prince Andrew, although both are prone to questionable style statements), I think that Goatsfeet should come out the clear winner provided she avoids see through pink lace dresses and crystal meth addiction.

(Fergie calls herself the duTchess in jest, to distinguish herself from real duchesses, whose titles are spelt without the letter T)

Nettletheelf · 02/05/2017 00:24

Although I don't think that any of the real duchesses are particularly stylish either. Those God awful beige shoes and coat dresses. And those terrible espadrilles Kate wears with shiny tights.

Boosiehs · 02/05/2017 00:43

It's threads like this that remind me why I hadn't been on mn for a while.

Wear what the flip you like, I bloody love a large fascinator and will be wearing one to ascot this year. Ignore the haters - bunch of sour ninnies.

Floisme · 02/05/2017 07:18

I really must protest at Thora Hird being dragged into this unpleasantness. She even made 'Praise Be' watchable.

Isn't it funny how often ignorance and nastiness go hand in hand?

Mrstumbletap · 02/05/2017 20:08

How is this woman not considered stylish? She looks fantastic! And the hat/fascination thing she has on looks really elegant.

People just love to be bitchy about her.
Nastiness really.
Why the need to bring another woman down?

Nettletheelf · 02/05/2017 21:38

Hi Carole and Pippa!

cocodidit1 · 02/05/2017 21:52

I can't stand fascinators, could never understand why they were popular in the first place.
My brother was getting married and I was urged to wear one, I declined. If you are questioning it, you know they are shite

Mrstumbletap · 03/05/2017 08:30

It appears so ihatethecold

I think anyone saying someone has 'bad taste' means they think they have 'good taste' which is incredibly patronising and superior. No matter what they wear that judgemental personality is going to ruin any outfit.

Unless they are a very successful fashion designer, that might be the only acceptable person to make judgements.

If you are attractive and have a nice figure, a fascinator or hat will look great, it all depends on who wears it.

WilburIsSomePig · 03/05/2017 22:12

There seems to be more and more sneery posts on here at the moment. Some just love to look down on people and try to make them feel shit about themselves, it's a bit odd. I never understand the desire to put someone else down but my god, some folk on here really get a kick out of it.

bojorojo · 03/05/2017 23:41

I think if you ask if a fascinator has had its day you will get these sorts of replies. It is inevitable. No-one in the Royal Enclosure at Ascot is allowed to wear one. They are now a "clsss" item. The Duchess of Cambridge never wears one and neither does anyone else who gets photographed for the fashion pages. This fact answers the question but just because they are purchased from shops like Debenhams does not make them fashionable. It just means people like them.

elephantscansing · 03/05/2017 23:42

I love fascinators. If they suit you, go for it!

ihatethecold · 04/05/2017 10:59

Ive bought my fascinator from Etsy but I'm now wondering about my hair.
I never wear it up but its not looking quite right if i leave my hair down.

My hair is bra strap length and straight. I don't have a clue how to style it with the contraption in.
I spend my days working from home or walking my dogs.

bojorojo · 04/05/2017 11:28

Pull back into a neat ponytail. The hat goes on top. Hair is easy to deal with if it is out of the way. I know some people like it loose and blowing about but for most this is difficult to stay styled for the day. Look at Sophie married to Prince Edward.

Tatlerer · 04/05/2017 15:04

Well I've just bought this and I love it. It's technically a 'hat' but it's on a band. Wearing it to a wedding with a navy Whistles jumpsuit and my trusty Valentino Rockstuds. Job done.

NeverTooOldForAnything · 04/05/2017 15:35

I am lucky enough to live close to a milliner who makes wonderful, huge hatinators and rents them out for very little money.

At the last wedding I went to I had a similar one to this in red. I always wear huge hatinators for events and get lots of compliments

Wow. The pink one looks amazing.
