Has wearing a fascinator for wedding guests had it's day now?

Just as the title really. I've not worn one for the past two weddings I've been to, just a small sparkly hairband or clip. I'm seeing fewer & fewer of them now too on younger guests. Are they passé? Shall I wear a big fabulous one on Saturday to a civil ceremony? I feel like I might be self conscious.

This thread is worrying me.
I'm going to buck palace next month for a garden party.
I was going to wear a fascinator.

What do I wear instead.
I'm not keen on a big hat and I don't have a big budget for something really out there.

Scribblegirl · 26/04/2017 07:05

Would we include cocktail hats in this? I have one for a wedding next weekend!

AuntieStella · 26/04/2017 07:08

Wear the fascinator, ihatethecold

They can be lovely! They are not inevitably passé.

OK, not everyone likes every style, but no-one can expect universal acclaim.

Because a hat can also be lovely or awful.

NapoleonsNose · 26/04/2017 07:11

I love a fascinator. I'm going to a wedding next month and I'm going to wear mine proudly. Hats, without exception, look ridiculous on me. I'm short and a bit fat and all make me look shorter and fatter, whilst a fascinator gives me a bit of height.

ihatethecold · 26/04/2017 07:16

I'm short too napoleon so I get what your saying.

I don't think they ever had their day. Ghastly common things that looked like a Christmas turkey died pink and stuck on an orange person's head. It's got to be a hat for a wedding.

Penhacked · 26/04/2017 08:22

There really are some snobs on here. I think anything that looks a bit special is fine for a wedding.

Fascinators have been gone out a good while. Same with pashminas, very noughties.

RicketyCricket · 26/04/2017 08:38

Well, I hate them.

They never look chic. They look fussy and overdone (especially when paired with elaborate updo) and they're such a weirdly UK/Ireland specific thing.

EatsShitAndLeaves · 26/04/2017 08:39

Tbh I rarely get to wear a hat (apart from a bobble one in the winter or skiing Grin) so I've always relished the opportunity to wear one when I can - races, weddings etc.

I've never worn a fascinator simply because of this, but I've got nothing against them. I think (just like hats) they can look very stylish or bloody awful if you get it wrong.

I have noticed people seem to be wearing them less in the last few years and think the trend has peaked - but I don't particularly think they are naff or unstylish if chosen well.

AuntPol · 26/04/2017 08:45

ihate - snap! - maybe I'll be at the same garden party as you?!

This thread had me a bit Shock, as I have never ever worn a hat or a fascinator, but given that I will probably wear it once in my entire life, I was thinking of spending £ on a hat-like fascinator rather than £££ on an actual hat.

So there will be at least 2 of us in common Debenhams-esque fascinators, and do you know what, I don't give a toss - I'm just going to enjoy the day and not worry about what anyone thinks of my headwear.

ragz134 · 26/04/2017 09:06

I have just bought this one for a wedding and I am so excited! I feel posh and grown up in it and I don't care if it's fashionable or not...

It's lovely ragz! Bride will be thrilled you've made an effort Smile

I find buck house events are not massively stylish there will be lots of fascinators, hats and everything in between. Lots of floral polyester dresses.

2014newme · 26/04/2017 09:14

That was for @ihatethecold

HemanOrSheRa · 26/04/2017 09:17

It's lovely ragz! I had a fascinator/small cocktail hat made a couple of years ago to wear to a family wedding. I love it. I'm short and round and absolutely could not wear a hat. I've worn it a few times since to other weddings. I always feel very grown up and pretty wearing it. Which doesn't happen very often Grin.

Floisme · 26/04/2017 09:53

I just see them as cocktail hats by another name. They probably look better if you've got a small head basically they're fine - unlike nastiness, which will never be cool.

WhatInTheWorldIsGoingOn · 26/04/2017 09:59

I was at a wedding last week and there were a lot. Young and old.

mrsBeverleygoldberg · 26/04/2017 10:03

I love fascinators. I would wear one every day, but I had to promise my dcs I wouldn't as they'd be embarrassed. The bigger the better in my opinion, every day, all day!

Bodicea · 26/04/2017 12:44

Hat or some sort of hair accessory like a headband but fascinaters have definately had their day.

Crispsheets · 26/04/2017 12:46

I really dislike fascinators and hats, but then i hate dressing up and decline wedding invites because of that.

LittleCandle · 26/04/2017 12:53

I've just bought a fascinator for a wedding next month. I work in a clothing store and we get asked for them practically every single day at this time of year. Our tiny supply sold out in days. I would love to wear a sparkly hair clip, but have thin, fine hair and nothing will stay in it. I love hats, but they are all now made to 'one size fits no one' and are far too big for my head. The fascinator I have bought is on a headband, so will hopefully stay on my head for a small amount of time.
