Has wearing a fascinator for wedding guests had it's day now?

Just as the title really. I've not worn one for the past two weddings I've been to, just a small sparkly hairband or clip. I'm seeing fewer & fewer of them now too on younger guests. Are they passé? Shall I wear a big fabulous one on Saturday to a civil ceremony? I feel like I might be self conscious.

I always wear a fascinator or hatinator, because I'm not going to spend an hour getting my hair done and then cover my head with a hat.

bigmack · 28/04/2017 22:23

Victoria Beckham didn't wear a hat or a fascinator to Buckingham palace.

Mistoffelees · 28/04/2017 22:28

Toad I wore a hatinator to the most recent wedding I went to, first time I've worn anything on my head (normal hats are too small for my massive head) and it went really nicely with my outfit!
I've always been late to catch on with fashion and the thought of making people cringe with my choices or them.looking at me thinking I'm vulgar is spurring me on a bit I have to say!

FrogsLegs31 · 28/04/2017 22:35

MrsTumbletap

Neither of those hats are fascinators though.

specialsubject · 28/04/2017 22:52

Regret even pretty and smiling laura Kenney looks like she has poundland fancy dress on her head.

These things are silly.

Floisme · 28/04/2017 23:04

Of course they're silly. Weddings are silly. The bride looks like an overgrown Disney Princess and the guests wear chickens on their heads. That's the point. Just make sure you don't look sillier than the bride - now that would never do.

lazycrazyhazy · 29/04/2017 00:30

I wouldn't call the head attire in PP's picture of the Duchess of Cambridge a fascinator. To me that's rather a lovely hat (the circumference of which I think would fulfil the royal enclosure regs at Royal Ascot). I believe there is a minimum circumference as a PP suggested plus no spaghetti straps etc. I love a proper hat for a special occasion personally. I think there are few occasions these days when people dress up so think it's nice to celebrate by doing so. I'm quite old and when I was young everyone dressed up in long formal dresses to go to the theatre (mine was second hand) in the 60s, 70s.

CherylVole · 29/04/2017 12:50

Who's suggesting the duchess of Cambridge is stylish?!!!!

Mistoffelees · 29/04/2017 12:52

Cheryl the same people who proudly shop in debenhams Grin

CherylVole · 29/04/2017 12:53

Christ.

Pigofwar · 29/04/2017 13:02

Agree they're naff. In the same category as kitten heels for me - either commit, or don't bother.

Niminy · 29/04/2017 13:03

I've never been to a wedding where people wore fascinators.

Clearly I have missed out on a vast social trend.

CherylVole · 29/04/2017 13:06

This is what people wore at mine

woollychimp · 29/04/2017 13:17

I've seen them shops and I've seen people buying them, so no they are still in!

CherylVole · 29/04/2017 13:51

one word chimp: crocs

Trills · 29/04/2017 14:20

I like them.

I have a thing that fulfils Ascot's rules for the Royal Enclosure (it has a solid base of 10cm or more) but I still think of it as a fascinator because it's attached to a headband - it wouldn't stay on my head on its own.

Mrstumbletap · 30/04/2017 16:54

I think the Dutchess is stylish. I shop in Debenhams too.

Clearly not what the cool kids do these days Confused

Mistoffelees · 30/04/2017 17:12

Mrstumble made me think of this

Luckily I'm happy regardless Smile

I was at a wedding a few months ago and someone wore a fascinator almost identical to this one. She was about 5 ft 10/11 tall and she looked spectacular in it. Unfortunately, it wasn't me!

hippadoppaloppagorillapig · 30/04/2017 20:33

Update - I didn't wear one & I'm glad. There were only 2 others wearing them & they were much smaller than my fabulous one. Love my sparkly hairband.

Crikey!

Well, I suppose it takes all sorts ...

ihatethecold · 30/04/2017 22:09

She always looks lovely.
She can't wear high street trends.
She would look ridiculous.
What do people expect her to wear. She's married to the future king of England not Jay Z.
