I really like it

pleasethankyouthankyouplease · 14/04/2017 21:51

If you're not sure then don't. I like the colour but you sound doubtful.
Someone suggested a cocktail dress ( I think ?)and I'd do that rather than opt for long ... and your colouring sounds ideal for a blue shade rather than black.
Hope you have fun x

Northernmum100 · 14/04/2017 21:54

There are some nice dresses in Quiz. Similar price range to the one you had picked and wish I was going somewhere nice to justify buying this one...

I like it, in fact I like it so much that I decked my bridesmaids out in the Sage green version! They all reported it as very comfortable and easy to wear. It suited a variation of body shapes and ages from a 5ft 1 size 12 24 year old, a 5ft7 size 6 15 year old and a 5ft 9 size 10 34 year old.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 14/04/2017 22:15

It was me that suggested a cocktail dress! And I do think that may be a better option, it's not ageist at all to think that only an 18 year-old doing 'prom' could get away with that much swishy nylon. It's common sense.

I do think it's a 'young woman's' dress in the respect it lacks gravitas and style, which is fine when you're 20, but I think you can do better OP.

Floisme · 14/04/2017 22:16

Wouldn't wear it now - it's too floaty and my arms are shot.

Would I have worn it at 50? Hell yes and rather fine I'd have looked too, if I do say so myself.

NameChangeInCasePeopleRecogn · 14/04/2017 22:45

I think so long as you're slim the first dress would look great. Some of the others people have posted look a bit Rita Fairclough for my taste.

OutToGetYou · 14/04/2017 23:23

The first one is OK, but I agree it's a bit nondescript and teenage. I am 48 (though not petite) and I wouldn't wear it.

That blue thing is vile.

TheDowagerCuntess · 15/04/2017 01:13

I like it better than any of the alternative suggestions.

I still say go for it.

robinia · 15/04/2017 08:05

I still like your original choice the best.
The only other one I'd consider is the TKMaxx one but I'm not sure you have the height to make that one look as good as your choice.
I'm about the same age as you and I'd choose between those two - it would be whichever one looked best on.

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 15/04/2017 08:10

I'm wearing that exact dress tomorrow as a bridesmaid for my SIL.

It's lovely and comfortable and the petite is just right on me at 5'3 and a bit

It's a tiny bit cheap looking if I'm totally honest, a few loose threads etc. Fine for a bridesmaid where everyone will be looking at the bride, but not so good if you want to look polished.

WilburIsSomePig · 15/04/2017 08:30

Thanks for all your comments, I really appreciate the input. I'm torn between feeling 'god, I'm too old' and 'fuck it I'll wear what the hell I like' at the moment. I'm not keen on any of the other links, apart from the TK Maxx one, which is beautiful but just too much sparkle for me.

I'm 5'2 and size 12 and although I have quite petite features, I think I might be a bit too dumpy for the dress. I do want floor length as I detest my legs!

Lovethebubbles · 15/04/2017 08:39

My friend had this dress for her bridesmaids and they looked lovely. It suited all of them and they were different sizes and shapes. I think it's fine for any age to be honest (they were in their 30's)

Loulou2kent · 15/04/2017 08:50

I wore this as a bridesmaid dress in navy & they are lovely dresses. Order it & see how you feel in it. They were very comfy & as pp has said we were all different heights & shapes but everyone still looked lovely. I did have to get mine taken up though but not sure how the petit would be.

TheMasterNotMargarita · 15/04/2017 08:52

There are several on ASOS if you search petite maxi. One similar but nicer sorry I can't get it to link.

Starlighter · 15/04/2017 08:56

I think it'll be perfect for a ball and definitely not too young. The high neckline makes it suitable for all ages. Try it! Very do free returns.

BreatheDeep · 15/04/2017 08:58

If you like it, go for it. It's a nice dress. I personally would be put off by the bridesmaid nature of it for a ball but that doesn't mean it's an issue for you. I don't think it's 'too young'.

coffeecuppa · 15/04/2017 09:02

I wore this in teal to a black tie event recently. I had it taken up slightly as it was pooling on the floor (I'm 5'5"). It's a gorgeous dress, very flattering and I got lots of compliments on it! I felt very glamorous Grin

SinglePringle · 15/04/2017 09:09

I think it looks quite cheap and a bit 'off the market'. But that could be the picture or colour.

insancerre · 15/04/2017 09:21

I'm 50 as well and also a petite 10/12 and I would wear it
The best thing about being 50 is that I can wear what I want and I don't bloody well care what anyone else thinks

NeverTalksToStrangers · 15/04/2017 09:25

I'm the one who posted the beaded dress but i personally would go for one like this. I'm 5ft2.

OP book yourself in with a personal stylist at John Lewis.
Tell them what you've told us, age appropriate, budget, cover my legs, not bridesmaidy etc.
At worst you'll have ideas of what you definitely don't want but hopefully You'll have fun and find something that makes you look fab Smile

polyhymnia · 15/04/2017 17:31

Sorry, really don't like the one in the OP. As others have said, looks a bit cheap and definitely too prom/ princess/ bridesmaidy. You could do better, I think - something more sophisticated and stylish which is grownup but doesn't need to be frumpy or boring.

Amperoblue · 15/04/2017 18:19

Aside from thinking it's not worth £70 ( quite dull) I can't see why age comes into it.
If it had an older model and was on the Phase Eight website I don't suppose anyone would bat an eye at it.
I think it suits the event you are going to send will look nice with your hair.
