Thought I'd start a thread for anyone who finds capsule wardrobes in muted tones tedious as feck.

Ditto little diamond studs and designer bags with glossy bobs.

I personally admire the style of Alys Fowler and Helena Bonham-Carter.

Also love a bit of Gudrun/Lagenlook and other cheerful offerings.

A successful charity shop rummage is a joy to behold. I like messy hair, well -loved clothes and making my own stuff too.

Anyone else?

I discovered Monki last year and they do some fabulous cuts and prints - their shirt dresses are wonderful if you like bold prints.

I love clothes, sometimes I like monochrome, neutrals, smart, classic etc but I also love bright colours, OTT outfits and bold, bold prints. Fashion is wonderful.

bookworm14 · 12/04/2017 11:59

Jacobfryes - that coat is STUNNING!

BusterGonad · 12/04/2017 12:13

I'm not hard core like you lot but I'm no fan of beige, muted tones. I don't really go for black either, I have the odd dress pans top. I love flowers, lace and embroidery. I'm a sucker for a print. I favor coloured shoes and boots over black and live in faux fur coats.

Floisme · 12/04/2017 12:18

I'm not really a quirky dresser and I'm wearing head to toe grey today but I get so tired of threads advising you to wear neutrals when they don't even know what suits you.

And I really dislike the look of painted nails.

I love watching what people wear and I'm afraid the sight of swishy hair and a nice bag bores me senseless.

My local charity shops are mostly shite but I love a bit of carefully chosen vintage.

And I adore tweed. God's own fabric.

SailAwayWithMeHoney · 12/04/2017 12:19

Love this thread!!

I'm somewhere in the middle of totally whacky and muted... my 'style' changes day to day depending what mood I'm in.

I basically live in multi-coloured harem pants.

dotandstripe · 12/04/2017 12:19

I'm somewhere in between too. Most of my clothes come from White Stuff, H&M, Seasalt and Boden.

I love the look of Gudrun Sjoden clothes in the catalogue but in reality they don't really suit me. I feel like it's the sort of a style you need to go full on for - a Gudrun top looks a bit odd with skinny jeans (on me anyway) but would look great paired with 4 other Gudrun items.

I just got some dungarees recently, nothing like getting style inspiration from 5 year old me. Grin

JaneJeffer · 12/04/2017 12:27

I don't like the capsule wardrobe look but neither do I like too OTT bright clothes and big accessories.

I like the way Helen Chamberlain dresses. Quirky but wearable. It's hard to find pics of her because all the "glamour" shots come up.

Think this is my thread. I would love to dress Kirsten Simone Vangsness charter on criminal minds Penelope Garcia. I love her style just can't afford it so I just dress boring.

Fauchelevent · 12/04/2017 12:36

Me but in a different way! I don't like muted colours or boring outfits - a beige top and jeans yawn. I use a lot of influences in how I dress, japanese fashion (think a lot of frills, short skirts, cute accessories, gingham), 20s glamour (high glam, faux furs, chic) and I also like to incorporate a bit of drag style, miami influences as well. So its a bit of a hodgepodge and i do get some weird looks but i've always been very definite about wearing whatever i like. Luckily i also get a lot of compliments on my style too!

BillywigSting · 12/04/2017 12:45

Ah my people!

I think my style can best be described as cross between hippy goth and gardener!

My wardrobe has pretty much everything every colour except pink (though there is pink in a fair few of the patterns)

Today I'm wearing a dress that has a black skirt and black and white stripes on top, a long black cardigan, black wooly tights and black and green boots. And a cameo necklace but the girl is a skeleton.

Yesterday was green paisley and brown hiking boots.

My is perpetually messy, it doesn't so much grow as sprout.

I can be elegant if I really try (and a hairdresser spends an age taming my double crown and cowslips, and someone who isn't me paints my nails) but it's so uncomfortable and I can't make it last more than about a hour.

My dad is like this too. He even looks a bit unkempt in his wedding photos despite being groomed and in a suit etc.

My mum can look elegant in a tatty nightie though.

All that being said, down with neutrals, up with prints! down with sleek, up with wild!

bingohandjob · 12/04/2017 12:49

in this vein, Sharon Horgan's wardrobe in Catastrophe was fabulous.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 12/04/2017 12:50

I've just falling down a mori girl/dark mori rabbit hole off the back of this thread. Have found some absolutely stunning pieces on easy.

Feeling like I need a flouncy skirt for summer....

BillywigSting · 12/04/2017 12:52

Mori is fabulous!

oh look there goes all of my money on swishy skirts

ADisappearingDreamOfYesterday · 12/04/2017 12:59

I have a theory that perhaps you are mostly people who enjoyed the 90s and rocked the grunge look Wink

I definitely rocked the grunge look and still have bright hair/piercings/tats etc but absolutely love understated clothes now. No trousers, patterns, or long flowy things - due to the bright hair and being very tiny, I look like a clown Blush

I always wear pearls and love fitted usually black shift dresses with a cardigan. Matching shoes and handbag. Leopard print only for accessories. Lined and fitted is my mantra, you would probably all hate me Grin

I'm definitely a winter person (skirts and tights) but I'm guessing you all like summer for flowy skirts or rolled up dungarees and converse...am I right? And I guess there's a lot of love for Irregular choice (and rightly so!)

I can't work out whether our (mine are older) DC are secretly embarrassed by us, or if we give them confidence to wear whatever they like. My DCs' friends always admire my hair and my DDs do borrow my clothes and shoes, so I am hoping the latter!

ADisappearingDreamOfYesterday · 12/04/2017 13:02

I am secretly fond of a flouncy skirt, I admit.

DH still talks about my very flouncy petticoat and laced corset worn as an outfit (with combat boots of course) from the 90s. He would love me to wear it now, but I fear I would look less like an edgy young thing and more like an elderly person with dementia who had forgotten to get dressed.

(I hope that's not too tasteless, sorry!)

BillywigSting · 12/04/2017 13:24

adisappearingdream I suspect you might be right, to some extent anyway.

Oddly enough, a corset and a flouncy skirt is what I was wearing when I met dp (at an mtg tournament)

Destinysdaughter · 12/04/2017 13:41

NevermetaGilesIlike I love that necklace you made, it's so pretty and colourful!

NevermetaGilesIlike · 12/04/2017 14:37

That's not my necklace but I have made similar. 🙂

I need these shoes in my life.... and need to make this top.

I love those shoes!!

JaneJeffer · 12/04/2017 14:50

AD yes I loved the 90's Smile. Can't get away with the crumpled look now though due to crumpled face! So maybe a neater version...

rightknockered · 12/04/2017 14:51

I can not do "look expensive' dress code. I have enough going on to make me feel drab, I don't need to look it. I like having a bit of fun with my clothes, and I don't think that makes me look cheap. I'm more of an ageing goth/punk. I'd love to look a bit like Debby Harry does today if only I could afford it.

rightknockered · 12/04/2017 14:53

I know it's hated on here, ut I'm increasingly drawn to Allsaints, probably because I'm not a flowery little house on the prairie type

rightknockered · 12/04/2017 14:55

And I think I look better if my hair is left to do it's own thing, get my hair cut twice a year

mnpeasantry · 12/04/2017 14:57

I love cold shoulders!

And I don't think Anna Wintour got the memo about not wearing prints in order to look expensive.
