Dungarees on the over-40s...

explodingkittens · 08/04/2017 17:17

I am currently coveting a pair of lightweight indigo denim Gap dungarees. I am 43.

I'm aware that this is an item of clothing that probably divides opinion more than any other. But I put them on and couldn't stop grinning yes, possibly in manner of CBeebies presenter

I would wear them with converse/Superga and a close-fitting tee underneath.

I'm kidding myself, aren't I?

I'm 37 and live in dungarees if that helps. I do the headscarf thing too which ups the retro! Go for it :)

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 08/04/2017 17:20

I'm 38 and love my dungarees.
I wear them with a stretchy or loose fitting T, turned over at the ankle with Converse or white Vans.
Bollocks to being too oldSmile

NotYoda · 08/04/2017 17:23

I am 47. Think I have headed into the territory where they'd be ridiculous.

Unless you are v slim and/or quirky.

You might get away with it. I'd love to

NotYoda · 08/04/2017 17:24

I love the headscarf/lippy look.

lizzieoak · 08/04/2017 17:24

I've been covetting the tight-fitting ones in wade blue (darkish blue) from Free People. I'm in my 50's. Let's be inappropriate together!

explodingkittens · 08/04/2017 17:27

Well this is my fear exactly, notyoda. Ridicule.

I wouldn't say I'm very slim - 5'7" and a size 12. I do worry about my arse in them. But they made me feel happy.

I could do quirky-ish - glasses, messy hair etc. I don't mind the 'art teacher' look, but it's a fine line between that and 'delusional twat' when dungarees are concerned, I reckon.

I think at 43 you've earned the right to wear whatever the hell you like and raise a stiff middle finger to anyone who says you shouldn't.

God knows there's enough misery in the world. If a pair of dungarees put a smile on your face then embrace them and enjoy.

EccentricPickle · 08/04/2017 17:30

Wear them!

I bet you'll look great. Smile

bionicant · 08/04/2017 17:32

Ooh link ?

TheCakes · 08/04/2017 17:34

I bought a dungaree dress recently. I'm 40. I'm not completely sure either...

NotYoda · 08/04/2017 17:35

I think you might have the chutzpa

Just don't wear stripey socks

A link!

NotYoda · 08/04/2017 17:39

For the love of God, NOT THESE

NotYoda · 08/04/2017 17:41

I love the classic denim ones on the Free People website

Spudlet · 08/04/2017 17:42

I'm going to be 35 this year and I love my dungarees. They are comfortable and lovely and also comfortable, and the denim is soft and the knees are ripped, and did I mention the comfortable aspect?

I wear them over tight t-shirts and with flip flops or converse. Or bare feet, at home.

Do it. Dooooo iiiiiiiit.... Grin

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 08/04/2017 17:44

Gosh, if they make you smile, just get them! I've haven't worn a pair of dungarees since I was about 9 (I'm 42) but it sounds like you can carry them off. And if not, who cares?!

Judydreamsofhorses · 08/04/2017 17:47

Early 40s here and love them - I'm 5ft 6 and a size 10 and have blue and black ones. I wear the black with blouses and brogues mainly, the blue with t-shirts and trainers. I think the trick is to make sure they are slim fitting or they run the risk of being shapeless and unflattering. Today I am wearing the blue ones with a navy and white stripy top and white Stan Smiths

NarcsBegone · 08/04/2017 17:49

I really want a pair that I've seen recently. I'm overweight and know I'll look silly in them now but when I'm slimmer I will get them. I used to live in them when I was younger and also worried I'm a bit old for them now, I'll be even older when slim enough to wear them. I figure that if you love them and they make you feel good then you'll rock them anyway 😊

lizzieoak · 08/04/2017 17:50

These ones. I've been wanting these for 2 years - you are all giving me courage!

No link unfortunately cos they're secondhand but I think these are the ones. They are a wee bit more fitted on me but basically me and that model look exactly the same Grin

billybullshitterz1 · 08/04/2017 19:54

I bought a denim pinefore for this winter. I can safely say I haven't had it off this winter. And I'm in my 4th decade Grin I've just bought a denim shift dress for the summer. Long live the denim dungers!

rightknockered · 08/04/2017 20:09

I have two pairs of dark denim dungarees and am in my 40's. Never considered I might be too old for them. I'm only a few years past my 30's and that's practically childhood

KikiDeliversCakes · 08/04/2017 20:15

Go on, go on, go on. Blue denim ones look lovely, enjoy yourself!

(I'm 42 and have been in my black dungarees most of this week...., it's just what I've fancied wearing.)
