Sandals good for walking that aren't fugly

I'm off to France in the summer for a week, and plenty of walking is expected. I can't seem to find any decent sandals that would be good for walking, but are also stylish and feminine.

Do pretty walking sandals exist, or am I going to have to buy Jesus creepers?!

I've got some of those strappy Merrels linked upthread. They are far from the most attractive sandals I own but they're quite inoffensive especially in all black and SO comfortable for long walks.

I love Saltwater, I have 3 pairs and am eying up the rose gold swimmers. But they are completely flat so not good for all day walking, you need more support.

maggiso · 16/03/2017 23:18

Has anyone tried Moshulu sandals? I walked past a shop ( it was closed) and wished we had a local shop. I think it was the ginger ale style I fancied! If others have found them comfy I might try ordering a pair.
My favorite flat sandals are 'Julia' (cork footbed flip flops style) by Think! but they are a few years old now ( I have two pairs- one several years old- the style is slightly different each year).

ChristmasEvePJs · 16/03/2017 23:27

www.clarks.co.uk/p/26124046 seriously comfortable!

Iamastonished · 17/03/2017 07:43

How come so many of you have so many sandals? The weather where we live doesn't justify me buying so many as I hardly ever get to wear them. The office at work has fierce air con and my feet would freeze even if it is 30 degrees outside. So, I have one pair of 4 year old sandals that are really comfortable, one pair of Fitflop flip flops (that are about 7 years old) and one pair of strappy heeled sandals (that are about 10 years old) that get wheeled out roughly once a year.

You can tell that they rarely get worn because I haven't needed to buy any for 4 years Sad

I dislike clumpy looking sandals like those M and S ones heidi linked to

NotMeNoNo · 17/03/2017 09:58

I suggest you get a pair of flat fashion sandals and a pair of cheap walking sandals from Go Outdoors or Decathlon (French company!) in a colour you like, then you are covered both for wandering around cafe's and actual walking. Or just take trainers for walking.

NoLotteryWinYet · 17/03/2017 14:10

there's just something so unsexy about merrell sandals - i have a pair and they are v comfy but i feel like someone's ugly granny whilst wearing them :)

BatshitCrazyWoman · 17/03/2017 14:16

I don't find Fitflops at all comfortable. I'm a half size with average width feet but found Fitflops just too wide to stay on my feet. I think it's a very individual thing, shoe comfort. Clarks shoes also don't fit me well and really hurt my feet.

Sorry, none of that is helpful so I'll just throw some brands at you that you could look at! Geox, Rieker and Mephisto. Some styles are hideous but you might find something.

glintwithpersperation · 17/03/2017 15:06

I don't agree re Saltwater sandals, they are so twee, and part of the uniform for mothers with school age children, incredibly dull.

heidipi · 17/03/2017 15:42

I think the reason i like the M&S ones is that I love and would live in Birkenstocks if I could. So my definition of fugly might be different to other S&B posters Grin

I just need some with a wide band across the foot as i feel the need to hide my little toes so any with a toe post and not much else are out for me.

sunshinesupermum · 17/03/2017 15:50

Just ordered the lotus ones - just what I was looking for!! Many thanks!

Anyone got suggestions for cool looking slip ons too?

NoLotteryWinYet · 17/03/2017 15:53

i like the m&s ones too heidi - not as fugly as merrells although i fear i'm headed for a second pair of them :)

CountryCaterpillar · 17/03/2017 15:56

Have DM sandals not been mentioned yet?! I have some and they are so comfy and supportive and yet don't look hideous.

Saltwater saddles are horrible sorry.

Iamastonished · 17/03/2017 16:04

I don't understand the love for Saltwater sandals either.

Madbengalmum · 17/03/2017 16:09

Saltwater sandals not only look ugly, they are made of hard leather they look so, well, mumsnetty.

Flyingbytheseatofmypullups · 17/03/2017 16:29

I have recently bought these. Really comfortable - just need some sun now!

Moshulu not as bad as some and very comfortable. I didn't mean just the high ones in the picture, they have all sorts. I always hope people won't judge me when I wear mine, they are as comfortable as hotter and marginally more stylish.

ShatnersBassoon · 17/03/2017 16:32

I like those Sarenza ones. The heel height looks good. Is the sole flexible?

Flyingbytheseatofmypullups · 17/03/2017 16:38

Sarenza ones are flexible. I normally wear flats for comfort, but reckon I could walk miles in these. Think they do them in black as well.

Iamastonished · 17/03/2017 16:44

Those last two pairs are too high for walking around in all day. My comfy sandals are Earth Spirit and are quite dainty for walking sandals, but are insanely comfortable. They are several years old by now and still going strong.

choli · 17/03/2017 17:08

I've walked up to 10 miles a day in perfect comfort in Naot Alyssa sandals.

piddleypower · 18/03/2017 09:32

Saltwaters are fab but they are too flat with no support for proper walking. Plus every other mummy has them (and most children) where I live.

Just had a look at the fitflops website - they have come on a long way, loads of new styles. Thanks.

dudsville · 22/03/2017 15:59

OMG whoever recommended the hotter tourist sandals, thank you! Mine just arrived. I'm not going to win any extra fashion points but they are like heaven on my feet. I chose the mango coloured ones. A lot of my trousers are variations of grey and they look great next to them.

Bluntness100 · 22/03/2017 16:05

I got my salt water sliders in rose gold on Monday. I love them, they are very very comfortable as the tops are soft. Suspect I will live in them in the summer.

Sandals good for walking that aren't fugly
ShatnersBassoon · 22/03/2017 17:45

dudsville, glad you like them. You're right that they're not the most chic sandals available, but they're not that bad either. They're unnoticeable, which isn't a bad thing. But so, so comfortable Smile
