Yet More Fantastic Skincare and Where To Find It

Thread 1

Thread 2

Thread 3

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether thread 1,2, and 3 are worth reading, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

This January we're doing some added extra chitchat about food and diet and reducing or eliminating sugar for both overall and skin health. Recipe sharing encouraged.

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

If you want help, please do read through the previous threads first. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer one or to two people a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly either.

Also, forgot to mention and keep meaning to PM you Salty, but here works too. I sent out the Philip Kingsley finally, (JDSTER, I sent yours out earlier in the week), as when I wanted to send it out initially they refused as it was too thick for the maximum allowance of a letter and wanted to charge me through the nose to send it as a package to the UK. I've had to decant it into another bottle but it's all pristine and I sanitised it before hand. The directions are on their site. I hope that at least works for you Smile.

Botemp
I'm getting my head around all these products and hoping to start ordering soon.

I did mention eye bags and you suggested the ordinary caffeine.
Do I use this as well as the morning
The ordinary 2% +B5
And the evening Paula's choice skin perfecting
And if so is it before or after these products .

Once again thank you so much x

The caffeine is an eye product so you only use that there, the BHA from Paula's Choice should only be used in areas of inflammation (and not around the eyes). The HA should be used all over the face but the Caffeine has some HA in it too so I'd skip the eye area when using both. Can I just ask though are you choosing the HA 2% on budget? I'm always hesitant to rec it unless someone is really on the oilier side as feedback on this product has been very mixed. I know you're using the Retin-A prescription quite intensively so am wondering how oily you truly are on the back of that (I think you mentioned combo at some point but am on mobile now so can't look it up) and whether this is the best product for you.

Mint, I don't think it's worth getting a seperate blush version unless you do very full coverage makeup and soak up the sponge with so much product by the time you get to blush. I clean it after every use, if it's just a bit of concealer or tinted moisturiser I dunk it in a glass of warm soapy water (usually Dr. Bronner) and then rinse out after an hour or so. If I need to deep clean it after using more products then I use 2 parts olive oil to 1 part gentle washing up liquid and squish the beauty blender about in it and rinse a few times. I find the soaps they sell with it less effective.

In that case try the Superdrug Simply Pure Hydrating Serum instead. I often forget to mention it with all of Deciem's offering but that's a good one too and usually on offer, normal price is around £2.5 I think.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a child-friendly hand cream? My DD is nearly 5 & gets terrible catches on the skin (not really the cuticles) around her fingernails. I have to trim them frequently as she says they hurt when they pull back by accident. Occasionally they bleed & get infected. She's got no particular skin conditions that we're aware of. My DH is just the same, it seems to be hereditary.

botemp thank you, no I don't use loads of coverage as my skin would really rebel (still not found a base I like!) so u won't bother getting a seperate blush one.

How about the neutrogena Norwegian one? You can get an unscented version

botemp thank you for your speedy reply and for posting out the Philip Kingsley.

Just after Christmas was when I started and obviously my 4-5 days between new products is a bit hurried! The Clarins I was using up was only brought in September so not that old. It is a product I've used for a few years and not had a problem.

I've only used the TO Retinoid twice so far but will dial back the whole routine for now. I do wear make up so might need to still double cleanse. I was out for a two hour run yesterday in quite cold conditions which is a bit longer than I normally go out for. Could I have sweated the Biore off? Although I don't really get a sweaty nose which is where I'm worse effected.

Lots of concealer today which I don't normally need.

Is it worth me buying some La Roche-Posay Soothing Repairing Balm as I don't have any?

Hi Botemp
I have ordered: LRP dermo cleanser, Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA, LRP Toleriane fluide and LRP spf 50... and I'm thinking TO Buffet too? That sound ok? I'm going to stick with Micellar water for make up remover (I wear very little make up, just a bit of concealer round my eyes and a bit of mascara) and use the LRP cleanser morning and night for now and continue with the rosehip oil if I feel I need it. Thanks for all your help, I'll let you know how I go..

Lego, it's tedious with a 5yo but the best I've found is pure shea butter massaged in around the nails every night and then moisturising the hands with the excess. Weleda also has a few products for this, Skin Food is good but it has a few citrus extracts in which sting a bit with open wounds so probably not the best combo with a small child. I'll have to look up what the others are called in English.

Salty, I just checked the price at Boots for the Cicaplast so probably not worth buying immediately unless you have it in the house. Maybe you have something similar in the house? Just see how you get on with the minimal routine for now and if it really is in need of a bit of soothing then consider getting it.

In two hours you'd break down any sunscreen with outside exposure, the Biore will have gone quicker as it isn't sweatproof. Wasn't aware you were an outdoor runner too, that requires some extra care in your routine too.

ATrueNerd, I thought you had normal skin with no issues? Don't see the point of using a BHA unless you have inflammation, acne, oil control issues and/or blocked pores and blackheads Confused. Again, LRP Toleriane Fluide a decent moisturiser for normal/combo problematic skin but as I mentioned the type of comfy hydrating cream you were after is more likely to be found with Face Theory. Anyhow it should make an ok combo with the rosehip oil. If you're just wearing eye makeup and no base you should probably be okay with a single cleanse with the micellar before it, though I don't generally recommend it with sunscreen, and I'm not a 100% whether the LRP is a fully waterproof one as you haven't specified which one you have bought.

Lego my son (11) also suffers from this. He likes coconut oil and indeed like bo said Weleda Skin Food, which doesn't seem to sting him.

My skin as been ever so slightly peeling the last few days. Not sure it's the cryotherapy or TO Vit C or the weather or a combination of. I'm going off the Vit C for a few days to check and might even try to mail Deciem. I wish they would get the texture right!

Back later w zero-sugar tips!

I thought I'd delurk in the hope that I can get some recommendations from you knowledgeable ladies.

Skin type:

Normal to dry, can get very dehydrated

Approx age (range):

34

Primary skin concern:

Dehydration and signs of ageing

Routine :

AM :

Superdrug vitamin E hot cloth cleanser
Superdrug Simply pure hydrating serum
Ren evercalm day cream or Yes to carrots day cream
Neutrogena spf 30

PM :

Lush Ultrabland
Alpha H Liquid Gold (around 3 times a week)
Superdrug hydrating serum again
Eucerin night cream

Makeup : eg. no/light coverage/medium coverage/heavy coverage

Light coverage foundation and a bit of concealer

Occasional treatments:

None

Things I've tried in the past with disastrous results:

My skin isn't very sensitive or prone to blemishes so haven't had any major disasters. The only thing that really causes breakouts is stress.

Things that are really working well for me now:

Cleansing, moisturising and SPF is working well at preventing any dryness.

The Superdrug serum is working quite well though I do sometimes get a little crepey still. I've tried the Vichy aqualia thermal serum but didn't like that as much.

Also really like the liquid gold much more than the nip fab pads or pixi glow tonic.

Any dietary/health concerns/pregnant:

None, trying and failing to cut out sugar

What I'm willing to spend on a single skincare item: eg. >£10, £10-20, £20-50, £50-100, no limits.

I don't have a limit but I don't think my skin is problematic enough to go way over the top really.

I specifically [want help with/am looking for a product to/am curious about trying]:

I don't know where to start with retinols/ retinoids, Vitamin C, peptides and other ingredients, I'm interested in slowly adding anti-ageing and brightening steps in to my routine.

@botemp oh dear, yes a reluctant runner. What else should I be considering? I'll typically run four times a week for an hour to an hour and a half at a time (marathon runner for my sins). There is something else but it is quite outing on the exercise front so I might put that in a PM if that is okay?

Just thought I'd post my current routine as haven't done so since back in Oct and have bedded in a few new products since then.

For background, skin is combination, am 44 with fine lines on forehead and around eyes (not visible until face moves) now relatively well balanced though I have rosacea (currently well under control), have hyper pigmentation from historic cystic acne (also now under control), have a tendency to seborrhoeic dermatitis in my eyebrows/lids (also reasonably under control). I have areas of large pores on cheeks, forehead and chin. Also have hereditary dark circles. Do still get the odd spot but much smaller these days. Sometimes get small blackheads in some areas.

Feel free to scrutinise or ask questions if I'm using anything you're interested in.

AM
Face and neck
-Spray with Cristalline thermal water
-Massage in Uriage roseliane milky cleanser - remove with damp konjac sponge

  • spray with LRP Serozinc if skin inflamed at all Or apply PC BHA Calm 1% or CosRX blackhead stuff (every few days)

-Pat TO Niacinamide onto cheeks and large pore areas.
-Apply Weleda skin food if any seb derm patches/flakiness or dryness
-Apply LRP Effaclar K if any spots
-Apply Avene Eluage eye cream
Pat TO HA onto forehead lines and by sides of mouth and on neck creases
  • apply TO HA moisturiser
  • apply Bioderma SPF 50 spray.

Lip balm (Dermaphil or Cattier)

Apply hand cream (Dermaphil anti age)& SPF 50

PM
-Remove make up with Bioderma Crealine
  • Massage in rice bran oil
  • remove with either tepid water and cotton wool or Sephora ginseng toner
  • apply TO Caffeine eye serum
  • pat in TO Vit C onto any hyper pigmentation and onto cheeks
  • pat in Sanoflore essence merveilleuse onto fine lines on face and neck
  • apply Natura Siberica Rhodiola Rosea night cream

Hand cream

Occasional treatments - Dr Haushka hydrating mask, Cattier pink clay mask, the odd sheet mask.

Skin is looking pretty happy at the mo, so this routine seems to be suiting currently.
Might think about adding something active-wise in for the fine lines at some point.

mint I just wash it thoroughly with liquid soap and warm water, squeezing and repeating until it is clean.

I got TO Azaelic acid last week and have been using it twice failing on and under my nose. I noticed an improvement yesterday and today in that although there is some redness there,it is definitely less than before.
Hoping that continued use will further relieve it.

Salty your poor nose! I can't tell if it is just irritated or if it's a breakout emerging? but based on my experience I'd say if it's the former then the frequent nip & fab combined with frequent retinol (when you aren't used to them together and then further irritated by sweat) is the culprit. If it's 'just' a breakout then quite a few of us found TO retinol caused congested skin and/or big spots - I did and I'm not usually prone. Hope this helps.

Lego my DS likes my Atrixo! Very much no frills as a product but sorted out his dry hands.

Mint I wash my sponges with hibi scrub and rinse really well. But I'm probably alone in that. I also use it for brushes. Just because of my acne issues. So long as you rinse them really well and dry them thouroughly, I think anything would be ok. I got a small version/sample size of the beauty blender cleansing soap in with an order the other week and it wasn't that good. Just felt and smelt exactly like any soap would. Maybe a non-scented dove bar would work well.
