Yet More Fantastic Skincare and Where To Find It

Thread 1

Thread 2

Thread 3

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether thread 1,2, and 3 are worth reading, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

This January we're doing some added extra chitchat about food and diet and reducing or eliminating sugar for both overall and skin health. Recipe sharing encouraged.

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

If you want help, please do read through the previous threads first. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer one or to two people a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly either.

Yes Enid I'm exactly the same with French pharmacy! Taking photos in is a great idea. Hoping to go to Boots today if you did want me to look for the glam glow although very jealous of your boots discount!

Id love to buy that concealer but I'm wary of buying without colour testing!

Micellar water is fine for eyemakeup remover and in an emergency to cleanse your face with but it's not a proper cleanser ATrueNerd.

Storm, definitely try it in store first, and wear it for a bit too. It's still cheaper on allbeauty I believe and they have another extra 10% off going on the sale again, but really try it out first.

Wow Bo! That will keep me busy for days Smilethank you. Thanks also for the moisturiser research. Have added those two to the list and will research the Japanese options if I can get my head around it. For now I'm squeezing out that sample to within an inch of it's life. You have prompted me to dig the body brush out of the loft...

Shestood Thank you so much but I'd better leave the glamglow. I bought some sheet masks the other day and still have a couple of Origins tubes. I'm going to be sensible and use those up before buying more. 😇 Although they aren't as good. Are you going to get one for yourself?

Just purchased Enid! The only mask I had was a body shop one that bo kindly pointed out probably wasn't actually doing anything so I'm very excited to try these!!

Some interesting links there bo, will save them for when I've finished all my work and not on MN

A damp beauty blender is revolutionary to me after just using my fingers for so long!

I have developed a bad chesty cough over the course of the day but my skin is clearing up thanks to the Zineryt so there is that. I guess sometimes with mild acne (or rosacea) you have to admit defeat.

Then I can concentrate on preventing any more breakouts and my actual skin. Trying to clear up spots is boring. Grin

Shestood Have you tried any of the masks yet? I saw a metallic blue glam glow one on Instagram earlier. Is that in there?

I'm considering ordering a beauty blender and also the one for blush, are they worth it? How often do u need to replace them? And do u have to wash after every use? I'm currently using the real techniques sponge but have heard so many raves about the blender that I'm tempted??

So I'm now two weeks into a proper skincare routine and my skin has .... never looked worse!

I've attached a picture (the horror). Where do I go from here? Having brought lots of lovely new products I can't afford to abandon them or start again, I can get anymore skincare products until next month. Do I just stop?

  • is a new product I've introduced over the last few weeks. I introduced one at a time and did a patch test on my jawline for a few nights with each new product too. I've only ever suffered with the odd spot breakout, never really large patches of redness like I have today. My skin was fine when I went to bed last night and I didn't change anything last night. I'm 40 if age is relevant, about day 12 of my cycle so again shouldn't be any breakouts due to that!

mint I had the real techniques one then got the beauty blender which I prefer as it doesn't seem to absorb as much product. I was mine after every use otherwise it will get a bit manly and not good to be putting on your beautifully cleansed and pampered skin!
I haven't tried the blusher one.

Salty

I think some people find TO Retinoid and TO Rosehip oil can cause breakouts - it could be your skin adjusting to the new regime. I get little whiteheads sometimes when using the Retinoid (and other vit A products) and the Rosehip oil can feel quite heavy. Perhaps keep it the oil off your nose? I'm sure others will have some suggestions!

botemp · 09/01/2017 11:32

Salty, that doesn't look good. At the risk of sounding like an annoying forensic accountant, I am glad to have the files on you all now as I can sort of see the timelines etc. So, you took delivery of all TO bits around Dec. 29th, so your 'slow introductions' is definitely a different one to my recommended two weeks apart.

There's a few possibly culprits but it's impossible to say 100% as you've basically introduced a lot at the same time.

The area on your nose looks to me as if it's over exfoliated most likely exasperated further by the swimming and the colder weather. Most likely culrprits in order:

The Nip + Fab Extreme Glycolic Pads - I'd already warned you about using these too often when you first came on, I think they were not irritating as much then since you were basically using them as a cleanser but now that you're properly cleansing they are working as they are supposed to at full strength. I'd park these for now, and possibly indefinitely. Glycolic may not be your friend.

TO Rosehip Seed Oil - you came on about a week ago, already iffy about this, I explained I wasn't a fan of cold-pressed RHO and that the reaction to it is hit or miss. I think regardless of whether this is the culprit, it should be repurposed to the body or something.

TO Retinoid - Like the Nip&Fab pads unless previously using a retinoid the use needs to be built up so from 2-3x a week to every other day (possibly remaining at 2-3x a week). Now TO Retinoid is actually quite a gentle form so I'm not a 100% convinced this is the single thing responsible but I think TO Retinoid + N+F pads acting as penetrating enhancers + Rosehip Oil were a bad combo to stumble upon in such quick succession.

Clarins HydraQuench Lotion - so this is a long shot but I feel I should point it out regardless, you mentioned needing to use it up, so most likely it came from a back of cupboard sort of place. If it's been opened and it's beyond the 6 or 12-month expiration, this may have contributed to the reaction.

I know the skin looks very inflamed now, but if it's like this normally I would monitor the redness as it looks a bit like mild rosacea to me (but I looked like that too when I had a bad reaction to glycolic and I should emphasise I'm no medical expert)

So in the interim, remove the N+F pads from your regime for now, honestly, I wouldn't be bringing them back but if you must try it at a more stable period of your regime further down the line. Remove TO Retinoid for now and reintroduce with the 2-3x a week approach (although from your file it appears you've only just introduced this, but correct me if I'm wrong on that) and remove the RHO altogether as it really wasn't a good match to begin with.

I can't find an INCI for the Clarins very quickly, but check the dates on it and I'll look into the ingredients later, I doubt this is the culprit beyond an expired product.

If you have some La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 Soothing Repairing Balm use that on the inflamed arreas at night for now and keep your routine to the bare minimum. Also, if you don't wear a lot of makeup (on the face), I'd stick to a single cleanse (with LRP Dermo Cleanser) at night for now to minimise further irritation and exposure. The Biore is a wash off product so doesn't require an oil cleanser to be removed.
