Yet More Fantastic Skincare and Where To Find It

Thread 1

Thread 2

Thread 3

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether thread 1,2, and 3 are worth reading, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

This January we're doing some added extra chitchat about food and diet and reducing or eliminating sugar for both overall and skin health. Recipe sharing encouraged.

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

If you want help, please do read through the previous threads first. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer one or to two people a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly either.

Hair looks lovely hollin

purple15 · 27/01/2017 08:07

Hi I also stocked up on the toleriane fluid yesterday at boots.
It's been further reduced and is just £7.50 .

AuroraPolaris · 27/01/2017 08:34

Yeah phenoxyethanol is max 1%.

20% off Paula's Choice today at SkinCity if anyone needs to stock up.

FizzyBubbly · 27/01/2017 09:21

Regarding the Lumea, if you only need it for lower legs you should be fine doing the whole lot in one charge. I can do both lower legs and 3/4 of one thigh before it runs out. I then stick it on to charge for 30mins while I watch TV, do my nails or something, and then do the rest. It's not fully charged by then but it lets me get 2 full legs done in almost one sitting. I then fully charge it overnight.

So unless you've got ridiculously long legs in which case I'm jealous! you should be fine doing lower with the cordless

Skinfulnappies46 · 27/01/2017 10:08

enid I got the pai burito Balm as part of a free promotion. Alone it is £20 for a fairly small tube, although you only need a little. I found it too greasy to use at any othe time other than at night. I have very dry hands but it did very little for them.i jus found the greasy feel seemed just to sit on my skin, rather than be absorbed.
Could just be me though.

botemp · 27/01/2017 10:22

New title suggestion: Dr. Sam Bunting's Video Content Generators Grin

No fermented foods but she's clearly caught our digital bug in her newest video and discusses lip balms, which we were also moaning about, so, yes, definitely lurking...

Thanks Fizzy, that's helpful. I hardly have any hair on my upper legs and what's there is probably too light, just the bikini line really and I'm far from mega long limbed. I'm going to let it marinate this afternoon and possibly take the plunge on it after doing some rereading on it.

The DHC UK site has the cleansing oil on offer for new customers, plus some free samples for £10.75 (full size) which is a really good price for anyone who has it on their wish list or wants a back up. Offer here, valid until Tuesday, 28 February 2017.

I found an another alternative Toleriane moisturiser from Eucerin, the Ultracalming cream for Normal/Combo skin which also comes in a normal to dry version which looks promising. INCI really quite similar to Toleriane Fluide. It's probably the best replacement I've found so far apart from the price.

Eucerin INCI:

Aqua, squalane, glycerine, pentylene glycol, methylpropanediol, tapioca starch, arginine HCL, cetearyl alcohol, 4-t-butylcyclohexanol (trans-isomer), ammonium acryloyldimethyltaurate/ VP copolymer, sodium carbomer, caprylyl glycol

LRP TF INCI:

Aqua / Water, Squalane, Glycerin, Dipropylene Glycol, Carbomer, Sodium Hydroxide, Ethylhexylglycerin, Caprylyl Glycol

Enid, if it's a sample I guess you can risk it, there's nothing terrible screaming out of that INCI but that's never really the case with REN. I wouldn't suggest to go out and buy it on the INCI but if you've got it and you're willing to risk the HA factor it's worth trying I suppose. Maybe test patch it first in the jaw/neck area?

Phenoxyethanol is indeed capped at 1% but often it's even less than that. Especially if it's in and among other preservatives like Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, and/or parabens you can pretty much count on it being present in very low percentages.

Skinful that's kind of the issue with dry skin. If it's very dry it's really hard to get it to absorb anything as it's so tightly holding on to everything it doesn't allow for anything to come in. Sort of compare it to a potted plant which has gone dry, if you add a load of water to it, it just falls right through, the same way a cracked dry floor in the dessert floods with rain water rather absorbs it immediately.

OP posts:
botemp · 27/01/2017 10:26

Meant to add, so a balm can only provide a heavy occlusive filmy layer on top to prevent further drying out while the skin below attempts to restore itself without needing to work on the protection part too.

OP posts:
botemp · 27/01/2017 10:32

*rather than absorbs it immediately.

Excuse the other grammar issues, I guess it's not my day today.

AuroraPolaris · 27/01/2017 12:16

bo I spoke to someone in Phillips customer service. The two newest models with cord are 1999/00 and indeed 1997/00, the difference between the two being the former comes with an extra window that facilitates bikini line use, which does not mean you can't use the later for that. I think I will buy the 1997.
Again I think that even if I had to wait half an hour/ postpone 1/4 of one thigh to the following day (and thus always schedule it like that) it wouldn't work for me, seeing that doing my legs, drying my hair and folding laundry are on the top of my most hated boring chores Grin
How does the BTW discount work? Haven't had time to delve into that yet. It's applicable t/m Sunday I think.

Skinfull my hands are not super dry but what works for me is always apply residue of skincare on back of hands (that is already a lot of stuff twice a day Wink) and when when that fails I use shea butter.

AuroraPolaris · 27/01/2017 12:18

We will then have to sit and do it on the same evening and report intermittent success and issues to possibly make it that bit less boring

AuroraPolaris · 27/01/2017 12:19

Everything you always wanted to know about skincare (but were afraid to ask)

botemp · 27/01/2017 12:23

The discount is only on the SC2009/00 model so that comes in at 254 euros after the cashback through Philips (they transfer it to your account). I think the 1997/00 is 214 with the current MM discount, I haven't seen the 1999/00. I think I'll go for the 2009 since there's so little money between it and I had a corded one previously and it got annoying to reach certain areas sometimes, although that cord was ridiculously short. I did see they were still selling my old one at MM too for over 300, thankfully I only paid like 50 or something for it.

OP posts:
AuroraPolaris · 27/01/2017 12:49

Yeah the 1997/00 is 214€ on MM. They claim the cord is extra long but I can't find the specific length, though I don't mind that at all since I'm used to the epilator which I've been using for many many years (just on legs though).

ababsurdum · 27/01/2017 13:48

Hi everyone. I've fallen behind on the thread, so apologies, but I had a question about P50W if I may.

I've continued to be intrigued by it and did an online consultation with BR which was simple enough however they said that it should not be used alongside retinol and that retinol should be stopped two weeks before starting P50 as it would make the skin too sensitive.

Now, as I understand it, some of you are using both. Is it actually a case of your skin may react badly rather than them actually being contra indicated?

Also, is it really that good? How many times a week are you using it?

Thanks in advance, I apologise if this has been covered before.

EnidButton · 27/01/2017 15:02

Thanks bo I'll test it in a small bit of my face although I'm not hugely desperate to use it. Skin is clearing up very well again. Just waiting for marks to go (thank you cicaplast 💗)

Sounds about right Skinful I like the idea of s lot of Pai products but they're never quite good enough for the price point. I used to use one of their moisturisers.

Thought I'd have longer to get the LRP fluide but it's not on Boots online anymore. Sad Going to get a couple of bottles from elsewhere right now.

EnidButton · 27/01/2017 15:09

Tempted to throw in a bottle of the Shiseido foundation Sali Hughes was recommending on Instagram but properly risky shade wise...

hollinhurst84 · 27/01/2017 15:51

Enid - it's £27 on allbeauty Wink

botemp · 27/01/2017 15:59

Definitely get colour matched at a Shiseido counter, they use a weird quadrant system rather than a linear shade gradiation. Which one is it? The synchro? I nearly bought into that but after sampling found it wore away really unflatteringly by the end of the day.

abab, it really depends what you want it for. Acids are a bit individual. The W definitely gives a good indication of how you'll fare with it but generally the more impressive versions are the full strength ones which you need to build up to. You can't use it with prescription retinoids but you can use it with low irritation retinols just not in the same routine, just alternate them. I tend to use it 3x a week.

OP posts:
AuroraPolaris · 27/01/2017 16:20

ababsurdum I use P50 for the general benefits of chemical exfoliation, like skin turnover, brightness etc, but in my case if found P50 to be a lifesaver when I've reactions to other products or even to food. Been using it for 3-4 years and can't recommend it enough. Started indeed with the W and after a travel size of that went on to the normal. Also - you just use a few drops so the bottle lasts a long time, so in that sense it's a "cheap" and highly efficient product.
I use it 3x week in the PM and use retinol 1% on the other evenings.

Dulcimena · 27/01/2017 17:19

Hello everyone. Just wanted to check in before I miss this thread completely on how things have been going with my skin. I am really happy with how it's looking - it's smoother, brighter, more even, stable and glowy :) I think I've a good balance of products in place and haven't had to wear any fdtn/TM/BB cream/powder etc so far this year at all Shock just a touch of concealer, mainly around the nose, brrr.

This is the routine currently:
AM
Ren rose facial wash (non foaming, soap free)
Benton Fermentation essence when necessary
TO Buffet or TO Vit C suspension
Benton Snail Bee Essence - brilliant stuff. Just brilliant.

SPF30 - either Korres or Ultrasun depending on what I'm doing/how skin is feeling

PM
Simple eye makeup remover cream if necessary
Bioderma
Balance Me non-foaming, soap free face wash
Buffet
Snail Bee essence
LRP redermic R eye cream
then it depends how skin is looking/feeling that day, so possibly
10% salicylic toner - I gave this a whirl and it's doing a lovely job of eradicating sebaceous filaments and congestion around my nose

TO 2% retinoid (don't use this much)
TO nia zinc (ditto)
P50W (maybe 1x p/week)
Fermentation essence (2-3 p/wk)
Benton snail bee steam cream
NY Frankincense nourishing
NY rose facial oil

TO Buffet has been a revelation, I didn't realise quite how well my skin responds to it until I ran out. I've also tried TO azeleic and it was sadly not good for me - emboldened by tolerating the dimethicone in the LRP I thought the azeleic would be ok, but it was not.

The salicylic was a surprise too as I've not been able to tolerate that for years. Very much believe that by improving the overall health of my skin, it's become generally more resilient - although clearly silicones are still an issue.

I absolutely believe that using multiple layers of moisture has been the single most effective change and I am extremely grateful for that advice, several threads back :)

EnidButton · 27/01/2017 17:35

Ooh thank you Hollin! So tempted...although I'm in Manchester in a couple of weeks so could try and get a sample then. Don't know whether to be sensible or not. It's a constant struggle. Grin Think I'd be most likely Neutral 1 but it's so tricky.

EnidButton · 27/01/2017 17:37

Seen bo's comment now, so think I'll be sensible and get a sample first. 😇 I've bought too many raved about foundations in the last year that I don't like

AuroraPolaris · 27/01/2017 17:45

(waves)

Hi dulci so good to hear your skin is doing so well!! Yeah, I remember our discussion re layering all that while ago Grin

I'm just questioning the order of your PM routine - I would apply P50/ salicylic/ TO retinol straight after cleansing, then eye R and then buffet and Benton essence (so - cleanse, actives, eye, serums, cream). Why do you apply these actives in the middle of the routine?
