Yet More Fantastic Skincare and Where To Find It

Thread 1

Thread 2

Thread 3

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether thread 1,2, and 3 are worth reading, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

This January we're doing some added extra chitchat about food and diet and reducing or eliminating sugar for both overall and skin health. Recipe sharing encouraged.

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

If you want help, please do read through the previous threads first. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer one or to two people a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly either.

mrslebon since you already own the Lotus Oil and you want to achieve more glow why don't you use it more often? Experiment for a week or two and use 3 drops PM before your night cream (might feel a bit much when you end your routine, but reserve your judgment till the morning Winkand in the AM 1 drop on cheeks before moisturizer. You may also find that this will enable you to use less foundation.
If your eyes are not sensitive you may want to try it (or what is left on your fingers) on the orbital bone on the outer side of your eyes. It might help to achieve a bit of "plumpness".

yongnian · 17/01/2017 17:40

bo yes niacinamide AM and vit c PM.
aurora good to know!!
Are those nose patch strips any good to initially clear a patch, does anyone know...?

Thistle72 · 17/01/2017 17:48

Botemp many thanks for your advice, I'll check back the other posts but what you've advised is enough.

user1483300215 · 17/01/2017 18:23

Victoria health viridian 7 day detox, finishing day one horrific sugar cravings but not hungry at all, crunching ice to avoid raiding DD Nutella.

Got TO vit C serum today another product with a horrid texture, the Nicotinamide is horribly slimy and this is tacky and sticky. Hope they work as they aren't much fun to use. x

Really interested in your treatment of rosacea...you mention TO niacinamide.Do you use it with anything else and if so,in what order?.i have redness under my nose. I don't think it's rosacea but i would like to know what works on reducing redness. How long was it before you noticed a difference?
I started using niacinamide about 2 weeks before Christmas then TO azaelic acid after Christmas, .i found the niacinamide seemed to react with products so only using it either AM or PM now.

Thanks in advance.

Don't know about the patches Yong. Of course I used them myself in prehistoric times, but they are very drying and I seem to remember that they do damage the skin. Maybe Cattier or other organic clay mask for 5 min after the shower and then just try to very very gently squeeze out the ones that are ready to come out?
I'm already trying to teach DS to never force or squeeze anything himself, though thankfully his face is very clear now.
I'm also trying not to make DS too self conscious about appearance (though of course he is to some degree) so I've only done/ given him stuff when he asked for it or told me something bothers him.

yongnian · 17/01/2017 19:48

skinful so initially had rosacea diagnosed by GP and was prescribed rosex gel which I used for around 10 or 11 mths...helped a bit but mostly only because it felt cool on the hot burning flushes when they occurred.
Self-help wise I read about rice bran oil being helpful as an oil cleanser so use that PM after taking make up off. Don't use hot water there or rub skin and also take a B12 vit.
So was doing all that and it was a bit better. But started using the Niacinamide and that has been the most dramatic and noticeable change - virtually all redness gone (I get it under my nose too, as well as across the bridge of nose). I'm just about to try the TO azelaic acid too, as have read this is useful for rosacea.
Trigger-wise, something else that has helped massively is drinking only non-oaked red wine...so only burgundy or Beaujolais. The tannin in oaked red wine apparently causes inflammation/allergic reaction.
It has all been a long-term management thing but would say niacinamide and wine-switching have caused the most dramatic effect in my case.
aurorayes that is such a tricky thing to pull off, not increasing their self-consciousness isn't it? DD is now very miserable about it and other people's reactions to it and so have taken her lead...she has high-functioning autism so she has a mixture of being completely oblivious of some self-awareness issues and of being highly self-conscious about others. Throw in lots of sensory processing issues around her skin especially and it's all an ongoing challenge to say the least!!
Good tip about the Cattier, will try that. Have tried to show her how to gently squeeze but throw in development co-ordination disorder and ultra-bendy hypermobile fingers and it's just not happening!

Tsmummy08 · 17/01/2017 20:12

So following a brief discussion about Active Formulas 20% vit C serum, o got hold of some pH paper and here's the result... DH and I were thinking about pH 2.5 and I've also attached a sample of P50 - maybe pH 3.5 or 4?

Tsmummy08 · 17/01/2017 20:17

So uploading photos from my iPhone didn't work... and I have perpetual Mac issues with photos, apologies :)

Well done tsmummy! Now we are getting properly scientific!

Yong yes I remember you've already written once about your daughter Smile DS has a very sweet friend from class with high functioning autism, who also has this mixture of "obliviousness" and sensitivity, and his mom shares things with me from time to time.
I ordered DS the Cosrx BHA after a mom on the AB thread (can't remember who) said it had really helped her DD.

Yeah the mascara is really good. Was surprised how smudge proof it is considering the price.
I also have a few of the eyeshadow sticks which are really good (brown shades) and a very good berry coloured lipstick, which is also very moisturizing.
I was actually wondering how the individual eyeshadows compare to MAC, UD etc if someone has tried them.

Skinfulnappies46 · 17/01/2017 21:54

Rice bran oil for cleansing Yong is this Palmers one any good INCI or should I just buy the pure oil?

Tsmummy08 · 18/01/2017 07:39

Aurora I've used a few Kiko "High pigment" shadows and they were good quality for the price: buttery and well pigmented. I think some of the water shadows are well regarded too, but I tend to go for my Makeup Geek shadows and ABH these days... I fancy some coloured mascara now :)

sunshiney78 · 18/01/2017 07:53

Hello! Does anyone know what the delivery times are from The Ordinary? I've ordered from their website (Deciem), on the 12 Jan, but no tracking/delivery info.
Thanks!

Skinfulnappies46 · 18/01/2017 08:03

Some of you ladies might be interested in a programme on bbc2 tomorrow evening at 9pm ( I think) about claims and benefits of healthy eating .

JDSTER · 18/01/2017 09:03

Sunshiney. It depends what you ordered. Such is the demand for some of the products, they've been out of stock. I would just email them and check

yongnian · 18/01/2017 09:09

stainless DD's skin started to implode about age 10, a few months before starting her periods. She's 11 now. I'm not sure she'd be interested otherwise, just desperate to cover up her spots...am trying the gently-gently approach that covering them up is fine when required...but a basic gentle skincare routine is more effective in the long run...work in progress!
And you can do vit c AM and niacinamide PM, whichever way suits. I swapped because I was finding the vit c balled up under my SPF, so it's better at night as obvs no SPF then.
Oh and there are others here who know KIKO well here but I recently bought from them for the first time and liked
aurora sounds familiar Grin
skinful well if you're in U.K., you can buy food-grade rice bran oil v cheaply from the likes of big supermarkets, much cheaper than the one you linked to. I think there was some discussion up thread about palmers and an ingredient common to many of their products, which isn't too great...sorry can't remember which but think it's only a few pages back. Someone more knowledgeable than me might be able to take a proper look at the INCI.
For me, I was trying to keep a very pared back approach and so the fewer the ingredients were better for me as I wanted to eliminate any sensitivities (I have seborrhoiec dermatitis as well which can go hand in hand with rosacea). And some people are very reactive to certain oils, so an oil-heavy mix might be tricky, but it depends on your skin.
sunshiney think my delivery times have been reasonably quick with TO.

JDSTER · 18/01/2017 09:10

skinful just had a look at tv listing and I see it's a Horizon programme which generally aren't too bad. They are looking at the 'clean eating' craze and also heading to the States to see cancer patients being 'treated' with alkaline foods. That aspect will make very disturbing viewing. Thanks for flagging it- I'll be watching

sunshiney78 · 18/01/2017 09:11

Thank you! (They were in stock according to website)

Skinfulnappies46 · 18/01/2017 10:17

Glad to be of service jdster. Blush They interviewed the doctor who made the programme this morning on BBC breakfast. I didn't catch it all but it did seem very interesting. He interviewed an instagram "cleaneating" poster. All very false.

Thanks yongnian will avoid that one then!
