Yet More Fantastic Skincare and Where To Find It

Thread 1

Thread 2

Thread 3

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether thread 1,2, and 3 are worth reading, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

This January we're doing some added extra chitchat about food and diet and reducing or eliminating sugar for both overall and skin health. Recipe sharing encouraged.

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

If you want help, please do read through the previous threads first. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer one or to two people a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly either.

hollin those meals look amazing! Very jealous here.

I think I had a bit of a purge from the PC but hoping it'll calm down a bit now. Already looking forward to introducing the Nia in two weeks (started the HA this weekend).

Still need a Sisley counter

botemp · 16/01/2017 21:25

Chanel Le Teint Ultra Tenue, not the super expensive one, velvety finish though so will have to see it in RL

Me too, I need an experiment budget or for people to send me free stuff and fly me everywhere. I'm liking the look of the Galactomyces Niacin Special Treatment Essence which will make a great replacement for my long lost love the Missha FTE since that got reformulated, have found samples but price not too far off full size so am debating whether to go with the samples or not (about 1/2 the price and about a 1/3 of full size in amount). And their Pore Tightening BHA Pack looks like a deadringer for my preferred Glamglow mask and with the non-irritating BHA to boot. I'm also heavily intrigued by their Vit C which they couple up with a Vit E serum. Was just about to look into the Galactomyces cream too... and there's also a 4GF eyelash serum... want too many things, Manyo PR where are you?

I also found a 50ml version of the eye cream on eBay for not much more than the 30ml

Hi, I've been lurking on this thread for a while so time to submit my profile!

Skin type:* Combination really. Slightly oily T-zone with areas of dehydration e.g. forehead. I have fine lines below my eyes and fairly dark circles around my eyes. Some small areas of redness on cheeks but this has been much reduced since I started double cleansing.

*Approx age (range): 45

*Primary skin concern: I'd like a more even skin tone especially around my eyes so that I don't have to ladle on the concealer. Just need pepping up really! I'd love a bit of a glow.

*Routine : I do a decent evening routine but morning is literally a splash of water whilst I wash my hair, followed by serum and moisturiser.

AM : Quick splash of water during shower, then Superdrug Simply Pure Hydrating Serum followed by Eucerin Hyaluron Filler. On a weekend, I may use a primer too e.g. Elemis Pro Radiance Illuminating Flash Balm or Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base.

PM : Cleanse - I've run out of Clinique Take the Day Off which is my preferred cleanser so currently using Eve Lom. Take off with warm flannel. Then cleanse again with REN Evercalm Gentle Cleansing Milk. Wait a bit and then use Nip+Fab glycolic acid pad every other night. Next I apply Superdrug Clearly Youthful serum, then The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid. I moisturise with Aroma Actives Lift & Firm Night Cream. I add Clarins Lotus face oil if I feel I need it.

Makeup: Yep, every day. Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation, NARS creamy concealer topped up with Collection concealer (but it can settle in my lines so i try to apply lightly), NARS or Bobbi Brown blusher, fill in my eyebrows with Bobbi Brown shadow, not much on the eyes other than a neutral shadow or cream shadow and Clinique Naturally Glossy mascara. Always Eight Hour protectant on lips.

Occasional treatments: None at the moment

Things I've tried in the past with disastrous results: Nothing to date

Things that are really working well for me now: The acid toning has made a big difference I think.

Any dietary/health concerns/pregnant: Too much sugar in my diet. Exercise regularly.

What I'm willing to spend on a single skincare item: eg. >£10, £10-20, £20-50, £50-100, no limits. On a bit of a budget but I'm open to anything as I use low end to high end.

I specifically [want help with/am looking for a product to/am curious about trying: Curious about the order in which I'm applying products and whether there's anything missing. I never use an SPF Shock other than moisturisers that have one in built in the summer (can't remember which now). I know I need to up my cleansing routine in the morning but don't have time with a 5 year old and a 10 month old to get ready Hmm

Thanks in advance!

AuroraPolaris · 16/01/2017 21:36

Yeah I also saw that eyelash serum. Which is your fab GlamGlow? Mine is the blue. Wink
Was the 50ml the eye for face or the proper eye cream?

I don't like mat foundations luckily. I tried the Les Beiges one but found the VLA had more of the magic thing.

Yong is in!

wiltingfast · 16/01/2017 21:53

Ah was popping in to query thoughts on galactomyces!!! Thinking of trying the plain CosRx whitening power essence to improve skin barrier and skin tone. Though there is yeast extract in the hylamide, so would I be pointlessly doubling up?

By the way thank you all again for the help on dd. GP said it was eczema. Nearly gone now Smile

How are others getting on with the TO niacinamide? Honestly at first I loved it but now if I overuse it at all it seems to burn me Confused Think I need a gentler niacinamide containing product... any suggestions?

botemp · 16/01/2017 22:03

I don't like matte foundations either but I do like that satin sorta dewy finish some of the Chanel foundations have, like the VL normal version. If it's something like that I may be interested, though still not looking for a base Wink. I like the white GG, just to use it on my nose and let it suck out all the dirt and make my pores look smaller.

Obvs I'm in too Sisley's paying right?

Yeah, 50 ml for the proper eye, here. According to their own site among their bestselling products the eye cream for face only Koreans can come up with this bizarro name is one of them, did you ever figure out the difference between them? I like the look of the galacto cream but ebay only seems to sell the rich version and that may be a bit too rich for me as it indicates very dry skin.

Thistle72 and msrlebon, I'll get to you tomorrow or sometime soon. Was right my stupid cold sore was the announcement of nothing good, think I'm coming down with something and am turning in early tonight browsing all things Manyo.

Wilting, I recently decided not to repurchase TO Nia even though I loved it at first too, but I realised it's in my P50 PIGM now at high concentration and the stinginess was getting stronger too IME. Should I just buy the samples of the Manyo galacto nia and forward you one? It has 90-something (high anyhow) galacto and a high % Nia, seems like a good try for you too? Gothamista discusses it in this around the 4min mark.

Yeast in hylamide will work differently, mostly because galacto products really are only interesting when they're pretty much the only ingredient, as an added on ingredient as one of many it struggles to perform comparatively.

That would be great Bo it looks really Interesting but hard to get! Where are you purchasing from? Happy to split the costs obv Smile

botemp · 16/01/2017 22:25

eBay, although I'm tempted to just get the 80ml bottle at 2x the price, in which case I'd decant it into a little bottle for you.

Elixiam · 17/01/2017 01:04

Hi! Another lurker here! I know there're a few in front of me but if anyone could give me a bit of advice it would be much appreciated Smile

Skin type: normal/slightly combination. Very slightly oily nose with slightly larger pores. Slightly dry around lower cheeks/jaw. Olive toned

Approx age (range):35

Primary skin concern:begining to age, would like to look a bit more glowy.

Routine : AM -
LRP Toleriane dermo cleanser. Was recommended but it seems like it soaks in a bit much.. is it supposed to?
Hylamide SubQ
Using up Aldi moisturiser

PM-
Eye makeup remover
LRP Toleriane dermo cleanser
Rosehip oil
Hylamide SubQ
Using up Aldi night cream

Makeup :
Very little most days, just mascara

Occasional treatments: none

Things I've tried in the past with disastrous results: nothing

Things that are really working well for me now: Since lurking I have added the LRP cleanser and Hylamide SubQ and my skin feels softer.

Any dietary/health concerns/pregnant: No

What I'm willing to spend on a single skincare item: Up to £30

I specifically [want help with/am looking for a product to/am curious about trying]:
I know I need a spf but it's freezing and I hardly go out! I'm looking at the Biore one.
I'd like a good moisturiser. Either separate day and night or one that can be used for both.
I'm very confused about if I need an acid or not? Do they increase moisture?
Should I continue the rosehip? My skin seems to like it, I read an article about it a few years ago and then saw some in a shop so bought it, feels nice on my skin so I've kept it up but happy to change it if you think.
Interested in trying retinol..? And vitamin C..?

Thanks! 😀

mrslebon · 17/01/2017 06:59

Sorry Botemp, totally forgot to add that I use an eye cream! I use the Trilogy rosehip one. And I remove mascara with Simple eye makeup remover. TIA.

AuroraPolaris · 17/01/2017 09:42

Ladies, forgot to mention there will be a further delay in Paris, cause after Sephora we will go to BR to get free facials. They definitely owe us, bo.

botemp · 17/01/2017 11:23

They definitely owe us ^and* should grant us special access to the underground secret VIP swimming pool filled with P50 from which you emerge completely transformed (in a good way). Also, we'll have to stop at a giant pharmacie, or two, and go gawk at things at Oh My Cream. Colette visit also mandatory. Le Bon Marche goes without saying. We might need to divert to Stockholm before heading to Asia as I'll need to stock up on things there too...

I did find a drawback about the Manyo last night, which I should have thought of myself as this is par for the course with 'natural' brands, the expiration dates are short. Most of their products need to be finished up within 6 months or less from opening. So no hauling or buying large 'affordable' version of their stuff Shock

OP posts:
JDSTER · 17/01/2017 11:43

I have a question about retinol please. TO sell 2% retinoid, as you know, and is often recommended on here. The 1% retinol is available now as well and I wondered the pros and cons of each?

yongnian · 17/01/2017 11:49

The galacto-whatsits sound great purely on the basis of me imagining some kind of super-charged outer space ingredients...fermented stardust anyone??
Ok, yes, happy to detour to Scandinavia.
Meanwhile, a few months into niacinamide and its official, my rosacea cheeks really love it. Redness, tiny bumps all vastly reduced. Using in combo with TO vit c at night there.
BHA users, do you just see a general reduction in blocked pores/forming of blackheads - what happens to those already present? Poor DDs nose is covered so have ordered some PC BHA samples for her to try but in an area already heavily covered with blackheads, what's likely to happen??

JDSTER · 17/01/2017 11:52

Bo I noticed that last night myself about Manyo. At least they have some trial sizes which gets round the problem although a pricier solution!

I hadn't heard of the brand but was curious when I read your chat with Aurora about it and you mentioned niacin. I'm using To but find the texture very sticky. I've tried using it first or after buffet but doesn't seem to make a difference to the stickiness. Too soon to evaluate its effect on my skin but if it's beneficial I'd prefer a better textured product in future.

botemp · 17/01/2017 11:58

As far as I know they only made 1% for the Retinol purists, I don't really know why. Probably as most research is in relation to Retinol and not the newer less irritating forms. The 2% is actually a Retinol and Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate together making up 2% in weight, so the 2% efficacy is definitely a case of creative maths as by the time it all converts into true retinoic acid (what prescription retinoids strength are expressed in) it'll be far less than 2%. My guess would be that Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate is comparable to Retinyl Palmitate in terms of conversion loss, it goes in the following sequence, and it loses between 10-20% of efficacy on average with each conversion:

Retinyl palmitate > Retinol > Retinaldehyde > Retinoic acid

If I had to guess the 2% retinoid contains less than 1% retinol but it's certainly less irritating so really only of interest for the purists.

OP posts:
botemp · 17/01/2017 12:07

yong, you are using the Nia and Vit C in AM and PM respectively, right?

For DD, if she responds well to the Fiddy shades pore cleansing technique it'll clean it all out effectively as it's mostly oxidised oils, then it's simply a matter of keeping it clear with BHA use and the Nia should be helpful with maintenance too. When it responds well BHA works quite quickly.

Texture is really personal, JDSTER, eg. I don't mind sticky but I hate things that are slippy (usually silicones). Think the Manyo may be a thicker substance too.

OP posts:
JDSTER · 17/01/2017 12:09

Absolutely Bo. I don't mind slippy hence TO vit c is fine texturally for me but lots of you hate it!

botemp · 17/01/2017 14:19

Ok, attempting to catch up with tsunami of forms currently.

@Thistle72

First off, as mentioned previously not drinking enough water does not cause dehydration in skin. Dehydration in skin is usually related to various issues like a compromised barrier, general ageing, etc. However, if your body is dehydrated it is most likely to deprive the skin of it first. Drinking more water is never a bad thing (within limits) but it’s not going to magically resolve dehydrated skin either, iyswim.

So as mentioned before general guidelines as above for catgirl but for you specifically routine to look at considering natural/organic preference at a lower budget for dry/dehydrated ageing skin:

AM

Wash with water or perhaps a konjac sponge, you can use a second cleanser here but dry skin doesn’t always benefit from it, especially in the winter time.

Hydrating serum, I’d go with TO Buffet in your case, NIOD MMHC if you can afford it. You can also try the Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence.

Moisturiser, the Benton Steam Cream will probably suit you, if you’re seriously dry Dr. Hauschka Rose Cream.

SPF, LRP Anthelios do richer versions, there are also some Japanese SPF options like the Shiseido Senka Mineral Water UV Essence SPF 50 but if you’re set on ‘natural’ clarify this please as it’ll make for different suggestions.

PM

Since you’re not wearing any makeup and/or SPF currently (and unlikely to start wearing a very heavy duty one) I think you’ll be fine single cleansing (especially if you choose to follow up with an acid toner which would be beneficial to you). I’d look into Andalou Naturals Apricot Probiotic Cleansing Milk, it’s under £10 at Holland & Barrett and a sort of cream/oil hybrid making it very suitable for you and your skin type.

Serums - depends what you want anti-ageing wise, further down the line I’d look into Retinol, Vit C, a niacinamide product (probably not the TO version for your skin type) etc. but for now just use the AM hydrating serum or your current serum, whatever it is Confused.

Moisturiser - as above, a richer version might be of use (like the Dr. Hauschka) or similar can be achieved by adding an oil to your moisturiser, it really depends on how dry you are.

Oil- dry skin really loves oil so use either instead of moisturiser, before or after moisturiser, or combined with. I think the Rehydrating Rose Facial Oil from Neal’s Yard is probably a good one for you to look at. Alternatively, the Pai Rosehip Oil (but build up use gradually and get a sample first, not everyone responds to rosehip favourably).

You’re going to have to be more specific on your questions on acids and glycolic. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I’m not psychic or telepathic and these threads have always been set out as advanced skincare chat so the basics rarely get covered unless there are specific questions. So please elaborate what you want to know about it, hat your concerns are, etc.

@mrslebon

The order of products is fine, you should know by now I’m not a fan of shower water on the face. I’m also not all that convinced by lack of time in the AM, massaging in a pump or two of cream cleanser and taking it off with a wet flannel really takes less than a minute. It's just a matter of switching your mindset to it.

Taking in consideration the oily/combo t-zone it may be worth trying the N&F glycolic fix pads extreme since that also contains salicylic acid, just be mindful of how often you use them.

Yes, you need an SPF. You don’t need me to tell you that. Get the Biore Watery Essence to try.

For eyes look at LRP Redermic R for eyes at night and the C version for the AM. For skin tone and brightening look into Niacinamide and Vit C, both available from TO.

GardenGeek and Elixium, I'll attempt to get to you tonight or tomorrow.

OP posts:
AuroraPolaris · 17/01/2017 15:00

Ah, I did notice the 6 month expiration before I ordered.
*
Yong -* I use Cosrx BHA on DS (11 soon 12) followed by Serozinc (I mean, he uses it himself Wink). He had a lot of skin coloured bumps on forehead on top of the black heads but both are looking better now.

Well, if the trip is to become longer then we must also visit Clarins as they certainly owe me for going on and on and on about the Lotus Oil, so I'm certain they want to treat me to a full body Lotus Oil massage .

Elixiam · 17/01/2017 15:17

Thanks so much botemp
