Yet More Fantastic Skincare and Where To Find It

Thread 1

Thread 2

Thread 3

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether thread 1,2, and 3 are worth reading, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

This January we're doing some added extra chitchat about food and diet and reducing or eliminating sugar for both overall and skin health. Recipe sharing encouraged.

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

If you want help, please do read through the previous threads first. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer one or to two people a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly either.

That was just Pupsie making a joke, Lego. We talked about her kitchen enough, so she really can't complain Wink

Clean eating suggests other food is 'dirty' and I also don't like the whole instagram/blogger movement behind it who are terribly uninformed. Don't even get me started on the frankly insanos that are the vegan community on Youtube. Also, the hashtag #cleaneating is really problematic and causing serious issues with a lot of men and women in terms of them developing specific eating disorders so I just want to distance myself from it as much as possible. There are a few good articles on it in the Guardian.

I think they might be launching a reformulated version soon, though EPP can be a bit slow with their stock. The Biore is also being reformulated for 2017, but doubt it'll be very different. The Japanese tend to reformulate them every year but it hardly ever changes.

Yeah pupsie was definitely joking...

Fucklez · 12/01/2017 20:26

Bo on a previous thread you recommended Kiehl's Biological Overnight Peel for my sensitive, dry skin that has a weird hormonal barrier thing going on. You also recommended lots of other products which I'm absolutely loving and my skin is really improving but the Kiehl's just isn't agreeing with me Sad

I find it really sticky and irritating on my face and despite trialling it for a while now, I'd like to try something new.

Could you please kindly suggest an alternative if you have the time?

botemp · 12/01/2017 20:39

Fucklez, I remember but have you name changed or were you pre form days as I don't have a file on you? A brief recap on your skin will be helpful along with what other products you are using, and what's been working. I remember the Kiehl's being the thing that helped me at the time with similar issues and I did warn you to get a sample first. You can return it to Kiehl's if it isn't working out for you, don't know if they'll refund you but maybe their newer version that Enid is using and liking will work out better for you. Perhaps, we may just need to get you on a stronger exfoliating product, how's the impenetrable skin behaving these days?

Dr Sam has posted a video about diet and skin. Do you think she lurks here...?! Can't link as on phone.

EnidButton · 12/01/2017 20:52

For the love of god! That's 2 things I really like that are being 'discontinued'.

Going to keep an eye out for B5 stuff then. I had a feeling it'd be that. I need to find something that has b5 as a key ingredient but no HA or Shea butter. Although I'm tempted to risk the TO one. Now I've adjusted my eating again and I'm sure my other products aren't causing any issues, it's so much easier to try new products. I like this new slowly slowly approach.

I'm happy to carry on with the healthier eating tips and talk on this thread if everyone else is.

Fucklez · 12/01/2017 20:55

Shock gosh so sorry bo, how unhelpful of me, yes I name hanged from BadgerIt. I still have your advice saved if you can't find me I can repost it.

I bought the Kiehl's but was told they were discontinuing it and replacing it with the overnight pore refining one, I got a sample of that too and found it just as sticky and annoying.

My skin was doing really well for a while. I binned everything I had and used my LRP cleanser & moisturiser, Superdrug vit e makeup remover and a gentle suncream. It felt much clearer and brighter, like it was beginning to breathe again but my pores were still clogged and I still had weird clingy dry patches around the blocked pores. My makeup still doesn't go on correctly.

The spots have completed disappeared Shock I still can't believe it so something is clearly working but I don't think I'm quite there yet.

EnidButton · 12/01/2017 20:55

Didn't realise Dr Sam had done a q&a on here. Sorry if someone already posted it. www.mumsnet.com/qanda/dr-sam-bunting-skincare

m.youtube.com/watch?v=oBB98AOovd4 this one Pupsie? I haven't watched it yet.

Pupsiecola · 12/01/2017 20:56

I was joking about keeping it just to skincare. I call "clean eating" moderation. I'm against cutting things out, for myself. It has the opposite effect. Of course some people have to for medical reasons. Even the mention of cutting out sugar makes me want to run for the biscuit barrel (not that we have one lol).

Father in law is now all stented. Today. Found out last night that he's been to A&E twice since xmas after dialling 999. He is so private. Never tells anyone anything.

EnidButton · 12/01/2017 20:57

Fuckle Which Kiehl's one were they discontinuing?

EnidButton · 12/01/2017 20:59

Pupsie Oh no! Glad he's had his op. DMil is like that, had two minor ops without telling anyone. Not quite the same scale but still. Wonder if it's a generational thing. Stiff upper lip and all that.

AuroraPolaris · 12/01/2017 21:10

Glad to hear pupsie. Flowers

We had kind of the same here - FIL went to hospital for a biopsy w/o telling anyone and died on the operation table... Still remember DH opening the door upon me returning from a walk with DS2 who was a baby then, and telling me...

botemp · 12/01/2017 21:16

Ah, yes! I have a file for Badgerit so will look that up after I'm done finishing up the megapost on funny...

Good to hear, Pupsie.

A friend of mine (she's a bit older than me so I'm guessing same generation) just had the whole keeping it all quiet thing happen too with a family member over the holidays, poor thing was suffering from cancer and chose not to tell anyone until her final few hours because she didn't want to bother anyone Sad. She's devastated, understandably.

hollinhurst84 · 12/01/2017 21:43

My order arrived from the bb cream shop (thanks bo)
They sent 4 samples as well, 2 are Bb creams, a snail thing and a water drop sleeping mask Smile

Pupsiecola · 12/01/2017 21:43

Oh my gosh Aurora, how incredibly sad Flowers. FIL asked DH not to tell his sister and DH respected those wishes but I think I probably would have told her. She has four kids and her life is pretty hectic. He didn't want to worry her. DH hasn't seen his sister for 5 years so it's not like he has seen her and not mentioned it I suppose.

That's very brave of your friend's family member Bo. I think it is partly generational and of course the type of person you are. And a lot of people like their privacy. So hard Flowers.

Fucklez · 12/01/2017 21:47

Enid, they said Kiehl's Biological Overnight Peel would no longer be available. This was Selfridges London but to be honest, I'm not entirely sure it wasn't just sales patter to get me to buy the nightly refining micro-peel version, but it does seem unavilable/sold out everywhere I've checked.

Badgerit/Fucklez, do you still have the PC's stuff? Did you ever get the BHA and hydrating serum?

It might be worth trying to reintroduce the PC AHA again in place of the Kiehl's but am just wondering what else you've been up to Grin.

OP posts:
RubyGoat · 12/01/2017 21:59

It must be so hard when people feel they can't talk about big things like that, on both sides. Flowers

Re the thread, no worries! Grin I wasn't sure how everyone felt about it anyway, & thought it was worth asking. Couldn't remember who'd said what (I have a rubbish short term memory - thankyou migraine medsHmm). Personally I like having just one thread for all of it.

I've just ordered the SVR Sensifine moisturiser & that spray SPF from EPP. I'll get some of the LRP SPF later... will feed back on how it is when I get it.

JDSTER · 12/01/2017 22:02

I'm still keeping up with the threads. I've got a pesky assignment for uni that's taking up all my time (I'm a mature studentGrin). Hope FIL recovers soon pupsie. Thanks Enid for Dr Sam q&a. I hadn't seen it either. She often recommends things we don't give a mention on here. Bo I know you said you'd sent out PC to me. Not sure how long it'll take from you but not arrived yet. Didn't want you to think I was rude.

botemp · 12/01/2017 22:12

JDSTER, I think you should call yourself a V student instead Grin.

No worries, I was slow in sending it out, a little over a week ago and past experiences have shown it takes a while to get to the UK, think I sent Pupsie and Enid something a few days apart and it showed up quicker with one while the other waited for forever.

Bo, you mention turmeric as an anti inflammatory. I know you'll mean preferably from the diet but if anyone wants a supplement I've got some. Lamberts-About 28 left in the box. Use by 2018 and have been stored correctly and are in a blister pack

Hi all, I feel bad just focusing on myself but I can't keep up! Bo, thanks so much for your amazing and thorough response. I really appreciate the time. I DID just write a full post and accidentally deleted it but will try to reproduce.

In answer to your questions - half Indian descent not SEA. And yes it was the gold Casmara mask. Skin seemed nice and smooth after it but it's hard to tell as my skin has been looking pretty good since starting the toner a few weeks ago. IE it is clear everywhere and only the 'problems' I have identified remain. Hypermigmentation on forehead is definitely reducing though and already my jaw line seems better. This is obviously all in my head as I realise creams can't work miracles but it wasn't a major problem and I feel that now I have a routine in place it can only help improve things even a bit or stop them from getting worse.

I will definitely look into getting your recommendations when I can/start to run out of what I've got. Thanks for the caution about running out and blowing all our wages - I will endeavour to control myself and stick to one or two new things at a time!

Just a couple of questions - in the AM if I incorporated a vitamin C serum would it be either this or an HA serum or both?

PM question - you suggested adding in TTDO (as I have got on well with it before) would that be as well as the Caudalie I already have or just a two pronged attack with eye-make remover followed by TTDO?

I will definitely be getting P50 once the Pixi is finished.

Aurora thanks so much for your input too. I don't like the idea of the snail slime! Is there anything else that has similar ingredients (HA is it?) and does the same thing without the slime or should I just woman-up and get the slime ? I don't eat meat so am a bit queasy about this prospect.

botemp · 12/01/2017 22:28

freelance, if you're veggie and really principal about it skincare becomes a very narrow lane. Please don't ask me where HA comes from, I will tell you and the answer won't be nice.

You can do Vit C followed by HA or one or the other. TO Vit C is a bit of a pain texturally but most of us have stopped pouting by now and accepted it's boring functionality and challenges for what it is.

I'm generally in favour of double cleansing (ie. an oil cleanser followed by a gentle cream cleanser) as it provides the best starting base for actives. The oil based cleanser usually takes off all makeup including eye makeup unless you wear very heavy eye makeup/prefer a seperate remover for that, then follow with a skin cleanser, in your case the Caudalie.

Bloody hell, I'm just reading through the Q&A with Dr. B. It must be pretty old as she's only advising SPF30 year round (shows how quick these things develop too) but most startingly is how it reads like a complete ad for whatever that Philips laser thing is Shock.
