Thread 1

Thread 2

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether thread 1and 2 are worth reading we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Xmas Grin

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Xmas Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

If you want help, have read through the previous threads, but if you still have questions use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer up to two people a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ooh, . Sounds great Storm but posting to and from the UK is insanely expensive as I discovered recently so all value would be lost I think. Enid might want to take you up on your offer.

The phyto foundation is also supposed to be amazing but let me just state right here and now, it's insanely expensive, I'm not even going to look. Cue two months from now I will be evangelical about overpriced foundation. I think that blush is only going to get more ladylike after a few brush strokes Grin

I think the quicker method (but not fail safe) is to look at the veins under your wrist, blue-purple is cool toned, blue-green is neutral, and green-olive is warm. Or something like that, Hollin will know I'm sure.

Help, we're already nearing the end of the thread again! We need a title, otherwise I might end up naming it the Fantastic Vagina Concealing Palette Unveiling Grin

*posting a package (post is cheap as but I doubt that'll pass as a letter)

Xmas GrinXmas GrinXmas Grin

I'm LOLing here and DH is suspicious. How to explain that I'm laughing about sexual connotations in make up?

Title-
How to save money on efficient skin care and then spend it on expensive concealers, foundations and blushes (as long as they're not By Terry)

hollinhurst84 · 06/01/2017 23:20

Am I makeup person now? GrinGrin actually if I posted my stash then bo would ban me from ever buying any more makeup

Um pass, my veins look blue but then I generally look blue given I'm so pale
My test was putting the palest yellow toned foundation on and recoiling in horror

A more helpful one would be if you are near a MAC, go in and try the same shade and same foundation in the two tones so say try waterweight in NC20 and NW20 and see which works

AuroraPolaris · 06/01/2017 23:24

But will we ever need foundation again now we are using the concealer? Xmas Grin
Plus I'm super happy with VLA. It's also a bit magic. Can't really get how it creates such a fresh, glowing, smooth effect with hardly any coverage.

AuroraPolaris · 06/01/2017 23:24

Ok signing off. Up early tomorrow Xmas Sad

ScoobyDoosTinklyLaugh · 07/01/2017 00:17

I'm sorry I haven't had chance to properly catch up with this thread. But I wanted to let you know that I'm on a rare night out I've been ID'd and knocked back three times. Never happened before! I think my new skin care regime is to blame Grin25 going on 17! Well it's either the skincare or Liverpool city centre is having a crackdown.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 07/01/2017 07:48

What's VLA Aurora? scrolled back but couldn't see (could have missed)

Oh bo that's a shame! I imagine they wouldn't go as a letter.

Oh Hollin do tell us about your stash! How is the house by the way?

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

feettothestars · 07/01/2017 08:01

Ok I have read all of this thread and still one and two to go. It moves fast, as does my one year old so time to post is small. But thank you for all the knowledge imparted here. So far I have:

Put away all the space nk trial sized stuff for now and gone back to a simpler more consistent routine. Trying to move away from the pick and mix approach I've had lately.

I've purchased the TO caffeine for a morning boost and a sample of the LRP redermic and a patch test hasn't reacted so ill crack on with that now. Waiting for Biore spf. Have relied on spf in my Dr Jart BB cream but going to add this to it based on advice here.

To purchase:

Well how could I not be tempted by the Sisley concealer?!
I'd like to try the TO buffet.
I need a nice oil. I loved the Sarah Chapman one but need a cheaper alternative. So, questions I have are these.....

Suggestions for a silky, nourishing oil that doesn't smell of rancid chip fat (I'm looking at you horrible good genes blue oil). I'm thinking of going back to Clarins.

The NICEST thing I used on my skin last year was a sample of Sisley anti age cream. My skin in the four days I used it was wonderful, luminous, clear and the best it's been on a year of shit sleep. I decide that yes, Sisley is expensive but if it gave me skin like that I would just stump up. And then I looked at the price ShockShockSo this week I bought another sample to see if it was the cream or if it had just been a lucky skin week. But no, one day in my skin is amazing again! Bo with all your ingredient expertise why is this cream so special? All beauty has a hefty discount but 189 pounds is still hard to commit to. Mm.i also LOVE their rose mask. Anyone know of a similar one? Emma Hardie mask bought in the hope it would be. It isn't.

I don't always know what the abbreviations are. What is VLA foundation?

Also loving the recipes on here. Thanks for the pasta link, the potatoey one I can't remember the chef name though or find the link even though I've scrolled back, anyone remember who it was? I'm making the 101 cookbook lentils folded in yoghurt on toast today...

feettothestars · 07/01/2017 08:03

Also my brother lives in Japan. Any other good Japan recommendations?

Tsmummy08 · 07/01/2017 08:28

I bought "the concealer".... In my defence I'm a concealer junkie but convinced myself a few months ago I'd found my HG in the ByTerry Densiliss... Aurora have you had problems with them? I love it, only one (so far) that doesn't settle into fine lines... but eye-wateringly expensive!!

Another fan of the MUFE HD foundation here too... I'm yellow-toned with rosy cheeks and find the Y225 and 235 work nicely.

Reading some of the advice about the Biore SPF has made me understand why I wore it religiously and reapplied several times a day on hot beach holidays last year but still came home with a very tanned (though unburnt) face (oops)! I didn't understand that it would just slide off with sweat... have reordered but will switch to Anthelios/Ultrasun for sweaty sunshine, if we're lucky enough to get any this year!

AuroraPolaris · 07/01/2017 08:57

VLA= Chanel Vita Lumiere Aqua
(Warning, this has almost no coverage!)

No, I haven't tried the BT concealer. Can't get it locally, so no chance to sample... and they are in my bad books nowXmas Grin

I have tried the Sisley Rose mask a few times (and back then was prepared to invest to get wow factor results) but found it delivered no better than the overnight masks I already own. I think bo thought the same, right?

Feet - Which S cream did you use? Curious to check the INCI list, though there is no was i would spend that.
I only bought the concealer as it was so discounted and it's double the amount (15ml) of your normal 7 ml or so.

Re oil I would indeed go for Clarins Lotus (look online, its cheaper than in store) or depending on what you aim to achieve/ skin type etc Pai rosehip (or maybe TO - has anyone tried that?) or Caudelie Polyphenol.

feettothestars · 07/01/2017 09:01

Thanks aurora - it's the integral anti age day and night. It's amazing. But why so expensive? I have dallied with sheet masks, my brother sends me random ones. Maybe I should try the snail bee?

SheStoodInTheStorm · 07/01/2017 09:02

Ah I definitely need coverage Blush

feettothestars · 07/01/2017 09:07

I've wanted to try that foundation for ages...

botemp · 07/01/2017 09:13

Yes, Hollin since you're always getting in packages of makeup you are THE makeup person Grin but mostly since you're, you know, a MUA.

Ooh well done Scooby, although I never understand why youth is linked to blemish free skin, I was lucky to be as a teen but everyone around me was crater city Confused.

I found a new shop in Antwerp now (Cosmeticary iirc) that has quite a large byTerry counter in the teeniest shop. It's in that little passage near de Wilde Zee.

Which cream is it feettothestars, I'll look at the INCI for you. I will say that in among the high end mosituriser floggers Sisley is one of the rare few ones where ingredients=price rather than PR, mythical sea broths, etc. but it's not universal across the range. While the Una Brennan Rose Mask is a bit different in composition (it has some clay in there) I find the results between that and the Sisley Rose mask very similar.

Also my brother lives in Japan. Any other good Japan recommendations? Soooooooooooooo much! Lemme get back to you with a giant list some time when I stop looking like this--> Envy

Oh you've reminded me of what I ended up doing with my cauliflower, I ended up roasting it with parmesan per this recipe and served it with this smash and toss roasted potato salad from 101cookbooks but used Jerusalem artichokes instead of potatoes and omitted the pickled ginger. It was a fab combo and good to cook together as cauliflower and JA roasted happily away in the oven together while everything else was prepped.

That lentils folded in yoghurt is very similar to an Ottolenghi recipe (HS from 101cookbooks and he are good friends who exchange recipes quite a lot but I find her stuff slightly more easy to do on a day to day basis at home). His was served on a puff pastry base but just reading through hers made me think you could even do that on grilled cos lettuce halves if you're going low carb.

For oils, if we haven't scared Funny away, she has a few in her stash that would be interesting to you and not so much to her.

AuroraPolaris · 07/01/2017 09:13

bo tried the Benton snail bee mask. I had the essence and it's amazing.
At the moment I only have Taiwanese masks.

Like I wrote above thread - there is a newish Japanese over night mask that is supposed to be amazing

Maybe your bro can send you that Xmas Wink

Oops x-posting. I'm a slow typer today...

OP posts:

Did get all my questionnaires out of the way as of this morning so no more new ones until Monday please.

purple15, hydration, hydration, hydration. Are you using Retin-A every day? You’re already onto the SPF so we’ll assume you’re covered there. I can’t quite make out what your skin type is, are you combo or oily but not so much anymore due to the Retin-A use?

AM :

Liz earle Hot cloth Polish - Agree, I think LRP Toleriane Dermo may be a better switch once finished.
HA serum - If you’re still having oil control issues TO HA 2% + B5 otherwise the Buffet or Hylamide SubQ, if budget allows the NIOD MMHC
rosehip oil - Is this preferable in the daytime? Otherwise the Face Theory Signature Moisturiser M3 may be worth looking into? The LRP Toleriane Fluid (not the ultra) will also be good to try.
SPF

PM :
An oil cleanser of sorts since you’ve previously been using the Liz Earle, perhaps the Superdrug Vit E HCC will make for a good alternative?
Liz earle - as above
BHA/AHA if you’re using - I suggest focusing on hydration first, then BHA and only then start contemplating the need for an AHA. For BHA, if you’re proper oily/acne try a sample size of the PC BHA 2% Clear Extra Strength otherwise go for the Skin Perfecting 2%, if unsure I suggest getting a few sample sachets from those two and the Clear Regular Strength to trial first.
HA Serum
moisturiser/rosehip oil
Retinoid Vitamin A (Prescription Adapalene Differin

If you could handle the fragrance in Elemis products without issue, I’m sure that the Clarins Lotus Oil is worth trying, but best to try and ask for a sample at counter first.

botemp · 07/01/2017 09:17

Juicy, was it the Toleriane Dermo Cleanser that caused a breakout, did you wash/flannel it off? Just curious, I think if the ones you are using currently work for you don’t let me dissuade you from using it. I tend to rec the LRP as it’s rare that someone reacts to it. So in general, it’s the heavy occlusive nature of products that clog up the chin? It may be ethylhexyl palmitate, I don’t do too well with it in solid form but you may have an issue with it in liquid form too (it behaves very much like mineral oil). Although the Body Shop Vit E cleanser contains it too.

So for eyes, if you want to get serious about it look into LRP Redermic R Eyes and for general puffiness TO Caffeine solution.

In terms of doing more, an SPF is definitely called for. LRP Anthelios Fluid SPF50 or perhaps the Body Shop Skin defence Multi-Protection Essence SPF50. You’re on the borderline for Biore as I’d class you as normal skinned with oil control issues on the nose so possibly too drying for you, esp. in winter while in summer it isn’t exactly ideal as it’s not sweat and waterproof.

Definitely look into one of the many HA serums for the dehydration to use in the AM/PM (avoid the TO 2% + B5 as it most likely won’t suit your skin type). TO Matrixyl may be a good one for you, TO Buffet (though both TO contain hydrogenated castor oil, not sure how you’d react to that), Hylamide SubQ, Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence, etc.

For pigmentation from the pregnancy you can look into Vit C, specifically TO Vitamin C 23%, taking note of the weird texture.

For the large pores and blackheads head towards Paula’s Choice, get a travel size as it’ll last you about a year if all you’re using it for is incidentally on the nose and chin area (2-3x a week). I think the Resist Anti-Aging Pore-Refining 2% BHA Treatment may be of interest if you’d like something that works as anti-ageing all over the face but is significantly more expensive than Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant which you can just use on the nose and chin area.

botemp · 07/01/2017 09:18

Yes, maybe bro can send us all that

OP posts:
AuroraPolaris · 07/01/2017 09:19

The Ottolenghi thing was not with pastry but the yogurt mixture was sandwiched between layers of vine leafs. And I agree his recipes are often a lot of hassle and ingredient hunting.

AuroraPolaris · 07/01/2017 09:20

Bo thanks for expressing what I was contemplating... and am also getting apprehensive about the Sisley
