For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether thread 1and 2 are worth reading we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between deviations on this thread are mostly my fault.

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then . Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

Oh and re the By Terry eyeshadow sticks - I haven't tried them but I think Dulci said they are no different from the KIKO ones, which are great and come in many colours still pissed off the burgundy mascara is sold out

Ah no, I was referring to the recipe feet posted, Lentils folded into Yogurt, Spinach, and Basil on Sourdough Toast. Ottolenghi has something similar with puy lentils but on a puff pastry galette but I like the idea of serving it on something like toast much better.

Which mascara was it, Aurora? I'll be all over the country again next week and those Kikos are popping up everywhere lately. And yes, the Kiko shadow sticks are exactly the same, albeit slightly more glittery and fewer matt choices.

Oh yeah I know that lentil thing - DH might have made it once.

Yeah hoping that mascara will be back as Clinique don't seem to make it anymore. No idea about the quality though. Anyone tried them? How are the eyeshadows, by the way?

Inspired by those on here who do it, once the Xmas chocolate stash is cleared I'm going to try and quit sugar as I'm sure it's doing my skin no good. I know there's a few books about starting a no sugar lifestyle so might get one and plan my approach whilst clearing the treat cupboard

And the retin A I have been using everyday for about 17 years for acne although it is clear at the moment.

My age is 46 and I have started to notice large bags under my eyes. So this is a major concern.

I don't have a file on you feet so I can't find quickly what your skin type is so can only make a guess. Regarding the above, the base isn't super spectacular, water, glycerin, squalane (used to be uncommon, less so now), sunflower oil, dimeticon, etc. Cheap stuff basically, some of the rare alpine herbal extracts are costlier but if I have to take a guess it's the yeast derived ingredients that your skin responds to, adenosine being the big anti-ageing one. Basically your skin likes sugar and yeast/fermented ingredients (mine does too but not everyone responds enthusiastically to it), good news is you're all set for Japan as they have tonnes of it (galactomyces/saccharomyces) in skincare, the most famous one being the SK-II first treatment essence, but don't buy that as it's way too pricey and owned by stupid Procter & Gamble.

I'm mostly a lurker but got some very good advice earlier on in the thread, so wanted to come back to say a huge thank you. I now have a proper diagnosis of mild rosacea from the doctor and, from reading these threads, a much better idea of how to set up my routine. It's much appreciated, by me and my skin!

I've gradually made some switches in my routine (to TTDO cleanser, LRP Toleriane Fluid for moisturiser) which have seen an improvement and am looking for a serum - I'm using up a the LRP Rosaliac one which I know Bo you weren't keen on but my skin doesn't seem to mind and is almost finished anyway. Am going to re-read the threads again for any relevant recommendations, I seem to remember a Darphin one mentioned a while back..

Also, feet the 101 lentil recipe is lovely - I make that probably once a week. Don't skimp on the basil is my advice

Purple, Retin A daily for 17 years is a really long time, maybe I asked before or I'm confusing you with someone else but whoever is prescribing it to you, are they not following up on the rest of your routine?

Was the sensitivity always there or is it really a side effect of the Retin-A? I know it can be used in the eye area for those who have built up tolerance to it, but discuss it with whoever prescribes it to you, perhaps you need a different strength? For puffiness try TO Caffeine.

It's the Darphin Intral Serum, mintleaves. Pupsie's a big fan (also with the mild rosacea). They'll be releasing an SPF in the same range too sometime this January. Don't let me deter you away from something that's working for you, I can only look at the ingredients and make an estimated guess of how it will perform for the money but with added sensitivities sometimes being able to tolerate a product well is worth the asking price for you.

So glad to hear it's all been working well for you! I'm glad you went ahead and got the diagnosis, at least you know what you're truly dealing with and where to go if it ever flares up, etc.

Bo could you just check if I have the right LRP stuff? Bit worried I've picked up the wrong ones!

I also need to kick my sugar habit but don't know how to get through days of teaching 4 & 5 year olds without a treat!

Re: thermal water. I've been using the LRP Serozinc as part of my AM & PM routine. However I'm pretty conscious of cost & wonder if any of the other waters may represent better value, any recommendations for a specific one? Are they all fairly similar? I definitely feel it's helped my skin though, I'd not go back to not using a water spray, having used it.

Thanks Bo - yes the diagnosis has been really helpful - for years I rather stupidly put it off for fear of looking 'silly' as it's basically a manageable problem. In the event my GP was completely unperturbed and very helpful .

Now I've got a baseline, simple routine sorted I'd like to try another serum once the LRP is used up - this is the first serum I've used so I'm interested to see whether it's this serum, or simply using a serum at all, that has been making a difference so far. I'll look at the Darphin; I'm also quite interested in investigating probiotic ingredients cf. an earlier thread as I'm fairly sure that adopting more of these in my diet has previously had a beneficial effect on my skin and I wonder whether topical application might do the same. But I need to read up on them more so am off to do that! As you say it's good to know I can tolerate the LRP in any case.

Lego, the Serozinc is a bit unique in the sense that it's a soothing anti-bacterial one. How much is it in the UK, as it's quite an affordable thing here. The normal LRP thermal water is usually on offer in a 300ml size pack of two for around €10 iirc.

I just get it on prescription from my GP.
Are there any negative side effects? I do have a bit of redness to my skin ?

Ehm yes . Retin-A is highly sensitising and even has a specific dermatitis to its name. Not many people are able to use it successfully for long periods of time. Hydration helps a whole lot with it as it tends to dry out yet you're still battling the oil production so it's a really tough balancing act. I'm really hesitant to indicate one way or the other how often you should be using it, etc. as it really isn't my field. I'd say the redness is likely to do with the Retin-A but after so many years of daily use I assume you've built up quite a tolerance, that's one of the issues with Retin-A iirc you keep needing to up the dosage (and try to combat the increased side effects with it) to continue to see results and at some point you reach the maximum dosage and you're sort of stuck there. Do you do a wait time between your routine and the Retin-A?

Yes, it's interesting about what works well in your diet and how it relates to skincare ingredients your face likes. It's all part of the same system so it makes sense somehow. I know I do a lot better on slowly fermented products as opposed to something like a direct yeast and I see the same in skincare. I don't do well with modified food ingredients either and it's the same in skincare. So no hydrogenated fats in my diet = avoiding hydrogenated fats in my skincare too.

Was an interesting comment on a reddit post yesterday, especially since we've been talking AB a lot, I do think there's a lot to our regional makeup that will determine certain reactions in our skin:

I am a genetic chemist who works with DNA based projects for over a decade and you would be very surprised at how much ethnicity does play a part in things that work better for skincare, medicine, food etc. the old Chinese/Asian medicine was right about that for thousands of years.

For example, everyone knows Western Europeans are the main race to evolve the chemical protein to digest cows milk and that places like the UK will have a less than 10% lactose intolerance, but they don't realize that's why also Europeans will react better - generally- to skincare or medicine with lactose or milk derived products.

Also Western Europe evolved the chemical to break down wheat alcohols, so generally they can drink much more of that type of alcohol and will not process as well tequila, sake, or vodka. Understanding your skin genetics as I call it, can help you get an idea of what will likely work for you.

Of course there are variations of people who can benefit from all kinds of things, and a much longer scientific study and explanation would be needed....Asia seems to be the main place this type of research takes place though due to many factors, economic, political, cultural etc. it's very interesting nonetheless.

I normally do my skincare routine at 7pm
Then use the retin A at 11 pm
Looking at my skin this morning there is no redness so maybe only if I use too much.
