Thread 1

Thread 2

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether thread 1and 2 are worth reading we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Xmas Grin

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Xmas Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

If you want help, have read through the previous threads, but if you still have questions use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer up to two people a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Storm, I keep all my files on you lot in Google docs so can easily share it out for you (and subsequently anyone else but it's already on a public forum so assume it's okay, will change it if it's not) to read too:

docs.google.com/document/d/1X2qUqvUSIrWP8-XBAu05K7hW31m-i24lKPJtFUAcbG4/edit?usp=sharing

Probably need to update it but it has the most recent back and forths, I believe.

Yes dear bo that is where we met. Who would have thought that we also shared a love for ankle boots, metallic skirts and expensive concealers Halo

Did you make those buns today? Have you got your ear plugs in already?

I might have been in ICI today on the way to buy dental floss for kids of course and tried shade 2. It is better than 1, pure magic. Didn't have my voucher with me...

botemp · 31/12/2016 18:12

I made the dough, will rest overnight in the fridge and bake for brunch tomorrow, added in some maple syrup as I don't have any date syrup and hope it's not too sweet now Confused.

No ear plugs in yet and no doggy to force some Bach Rescue Remedy down this year unfortunately as we had to put her down a few months ago Sad. Suddenly became very apparent today somehow.

ICI should just sell dental floss already, although I've read recently that apparently flossing is a waste of effort. The site Hollin mentioned (allbeauty) is lethal though, it's much cheaper on there and there's a 10% of code on top available too, code is ANN10. It comes out to around €47 Shock. The sale has a few gems including an eye palette from Dior in very strong jewel tones that would suit a lot of eye colours but is probably a good night time one, they sell my favourite Elizabeth Arden Smokey Eye Pencils (developed by Mary Greenwell and the reason I bought them, but they really are fab and quick and easy without that endorsement) at a far lower price than I'm used to buying it. Lovely Neom candles not that I'll need any for a while after robbing TKMaxx of them but they've become a bit harder to find since dB stopped selling them. They also sell Giorgio Armani Makeup at a discount which I've never seen anywhere. They also sell Shea Moisture products which I've looked into in the past but it was really difficult to source without a lot of import taxes at the time but it was a while ago but their prices seem reasonable. It's originally an Afro-American brand but it's supposed to be really good for curly hair, very gentle no sulfates, etc. and partially organic. So thanks a whole lot Hollin NOT Xmas Wink.

Oh so sorry about the doggy Xmas Sad
We only have two cavias so we've put some white noise next to the cage.

Till when in that code available?

AuroraPolaris · 31/12/2016 19:09

By the way some Kruidvat stores have Shea Moisture stuff. Can't stand it personally as the smell is super strong and it doesn't go away.

buckeejit · 31/12/2016 19:16

Thanks bo & also sorry to hear about your dog :(

Is there a a website/small book that's a good place to start learning about skincare ingredients? For someone who was always crap at science that is! Totally agree about the pick & mix thing-dh bought me a big niod set for Christmas too so might try it full time & see how we go from there.

Happy new year all :)

witsender · 31/12/2016 19:23

Evening all!

The website that I have a voucher for have a lot of REN skincare...What's it like? Any experiences?

botemp · 31/12/2016 19:40

Good to know so will have a sniff in Kruidvat they really do know how to name the drugstores here, don't' they? as I generally hate all lingering smells.

Not sure til when the code is available, Aurora, got it off one of those voucher sites and it doesn't say, did work though (was just trying not buying Halo) but it looks like a site that constantly do discount offers of around 10%. I've signed up for the newsletters just in case. Also, free shipping over €20.

And that concealer really isn't expensive considering how many ml you get, and remember all the other beneficial ingredients, plus MAGIC

I'll have to think on a website, buck beyond the CH cheat sheets it gets difficult to pinpoint one or a book (never read it myself but possibly Paula Begoun's book may be worth exploring?). The Dr. Sam Bunting videos on ingredient for The Telegraph are useful too.

I do have a bit of time off over the next few days so I'll attempt to organise some of the info from the past threads on a stand alone website not a blog, I hope, you'll all have to automatically hate me and distrust me then where it's organised a bit better. I have the threads backed up in Google doc, so it's just a matter of filtering out the useful info, if anyone else feels like volunteering, very welcome Smile.

witsender, REN not as fantastic as it used to be at the time it first came out. Very meh personally about things I've tried from them. Which site is it and quick reminder of your skin type/issues/etc.?

OP posts:
AuroraPolaris · 31/12/2016 20:26

I volunteer obviously Xmas Grin

JDSTER · 31/12/2016 21:29

Thanks Aurora. I'll PM you in the new year when I'm home

JDSTER · 31/12/2016 21:47

In case anyone was looking at TO primers- I got the 'high adherence silicone primer' with high hopes.....

"High Adherence Silicone Primer uses advanced adaptive silicones to act as a matte, hydrating, blurring primer for makeup that looks higher in definition and adheres for longer. The formula can also be used alone as a non-greasy hydrator that reduces the looks of pores and of imperfections."

I got it for its matte, blurring properties and reduction of visibility of pores but I can safely say on me it did absolutely nothing! I tried it on one side of my face and it literally looked exactly the same as the side without the primer Hmm. At least it was an inexpensive purchase.

braceybracegirl · 31/12/2016 22:08

Ok so these are the products I've purchased based on advice here. I have dehydrated skin with blackheads and occasional spots. Not used any of them yet and still need to get a facial SPF. Hoping I've bought the right products. The toleraine was on 3 for 2 so I've got a cleanser and 2 moisturisers. Think one is an overnight moisturiser. Just want to be reassured that I've bought the right products!

I already use the body shop vit e cream so carrying on with that.

hollinhurst84 · 31/12/2016 22:25

Oops Grin
Allbeauty is fine to buy from too, they actually have a salon and you can see the address on the website etc. I suspect it's reduced as its in Guernsey, I know I used to use another site based in Jersey that had big reductions
Going to have a look at those hair products, I have v v curly dry hair

EnidButton · 31/12/2016 22:54

Haven't caught up yet. Just wanted to wish you all a very happy new year. ✨❤

And in honour of you all I wore a sequinned skirt today. Just for a browse around town. It's a mix of antique/rose ish gold, kind of matte silver and pewter coloured sequins. Shortish. Worn with a grey textured jumper, opaques and leather jacket. Felt good. It's been languishing in tissue paper in my wardrobe for ages waiting for its moment and apparently, me buying daffodils in M&S was it. Grin

Hope 2017 brings you clear, glowing skin, red velvet boots and The Stila palette. (And wealth, health and happiness obviously.)

freelancegirl · 01/01/2017 11:53

Happy New Year everyone.

Bo thanks so much for the really full response and advice. It's interesting about the bloggers and who influencers. I'm actually a journalist but a conventional one so don't know anything about the blogging sphere in terms of who their being paid by and how this affects what they recommend. I will have more of a buyer beware attitude in future.

I'm sorry to be all me me me but I'm only on a phone and it's hard to catch up with the thread. I'm here in spain for another week so don't immediate access to many products. I'm wondering if you could advise me on good cleansers (my dermologica one is going to run out before the holiday is over) and a good spf and I will see if I can get them here. I also need a good serum. Do I?

I can't fill out the form but my issues are: hyper pigmentation on the forehead, crows feet around the eyes and elasticity in the jowels. Skin otherwise generally good. Not greasy or dry on face but body tends to be dry.

Currently using:
Eye gel remover to get rid of heavy eye make up (it's not working well and need a new one - Enid up thread suggested a Nivea one)
Dermologica gel cleanser (running out imminently and will need to buy something new here in spain tomorrow - LRP?)
Pixi glow tonic - my first acid toner and making a big difference in 10 days or so I've used it
An organic hydrating eye gel I got from my local Ayurvedic spa in London
LRP redernic R - my first retinol which I tried first time last night. Didn't use my Pixi tonic as was worried about overkill.

A night cream from here in spain - need a new one too.

Favourites in the UK have been Take the Day Off and Neals Yard Frankincense cream. Have tried rosenip oil but brought me out in spots.

Daytime: quick cleanse, eye gel, day cream.

I'm thinking I need a good serum (to adddrss what though - hyperpigmentation, elasticity...?), a new cleanser, good eye make up remover (I wear Bobbi Brown gel and it's hard to remove), SPF.

I did order Good Genes in England but can always send it back I guess! Or try one pot.

How do you get samples of things to try?

In the chemist here in spain there is LRP, Caudialie, Vichy and others I'm not familiar with.

Rojak · 01/01/2017 12:03

I think you need a very high factor sunscreen every day for pigmentation - it won't help existing pigmentation but would help prevent more from coming through?

I think the only thing which works on pigmentation is probably a laser procedure. After which you will definitely need to use a daily sunscreen.

EnidButton · 01/01/2017 12:07

Freelance It wasn't me who recommended the eye cleanser. I've never got on with them and prefer an oil balm (EH morninga balm and) to remove make up inc eyes. Never found a eye makeup remover that didn't leave them dry although the No7 one that you shake to mix is quite good.

ScoobyDoosTinklyLaugh · 01/01/2017 12:30

Happy New Year Skin Nerds!

I've got some serious catching up to do in this thread.

I failed to even take my make-up off last night/this morning Grin

Pupsiecola · 01/01/2017 15:19

Happy New Year to all. Bo I am happy to help with any extern website admin type stuff. 😀

FizzyBubbly · 01/01/2017 15:39

Happy New Year to all! Have skim read the last few days posts but need to have a proper read, hopefully tonight.

I think I deserve a gold star, as despite being rather tipsy last night I completed my entire pm skincare routine. I knew I'd forget if I left it too late, so at just gone midnight I did it all at my MILs dining room table while we were playing a board game. I then proceeded to drunkenly explain the benefits and purpose of each step!

Bo I've copied, pasted and emailed your last post re my DH's eyes to him and he is eternally grateful for the advice you've given. He's going to give the Skeen powder a miss (very interesting reading though, and thanks so much for the extra research) and start with the LRP. He wants to order some SPF at the same time and I've said that the LRP Anthelios is popular on here but iirc there's a particular one (fluid maybe?) that's recommended. Could someone who has used it point me in the right direction please? Thanks Halo

FizzyBubbly · 01/01/2017 16:07

Oh and once I've caught up with life now that the festive seasons over I don't mind helping the cause too Bo

botemp · 01/01/2017 16:09

First post of the New Year!

Thanks for volunteering, Aurora, Pupsie, and Fizzy! Will set you to task once I sort it all out from my end.

Recap on the sugar-free cardamom buns, it was a bit of a rescue mission as I only considered this morning that the filling (a spiced butter-sugar mixture that gets spread between them before turning into little twisty dough shapes) wasn't going to work without that amount of sugar in it, most likely ending in a buttery mess coming from my oven. So I scrambled together a stevia creme patisserie (as sugar isn't the binding agent in that) flavoured with cardamom and orange peel and turned it into one of those Danish plaited 'sweet' breads

Sorry, forgot about the 2nd/morning cleanser, Freelance. LRP Toleriane Dermo Cleanser (not the gel, it's a milk, see bracey's picture above) will do you well but please note it's a facial cleanser, not a makeup remover, it can do that but it won't make for a good 1st cleanser (you'll want an oil based one for that).

You're amazing Bo, thanks! I will head down the farmacia as soon as possible to get that SPF and post when I've got a laptop and can do the form. Lovely advice, much appreciated. I might start looking into the whole blog thing on a professional level as a matter of interest.
