Thread 1

Thread 2

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether thread 1and 2 are worth reading we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Xmas Grin

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Xmas Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

If you want help, have read through the previous threads, but if you still have questions use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer up to two people a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Hollin - and that is why I don't get CH's popularity! There's no retinol in the product or the ingredient listing that she posted. Deciem says there's a peptide ingredient that's "more effective than retinol" but that's the only claim. Lazy blogging.

buckeejit · 30/12/2016 11:31

Hello

Looking forward to RTFT-just back from Christmas week at in laws & too much overindulgence is taking its toll on my skin! If anyone has time here's my spec

Skin type - slightly dehydrated & prone to milia around eyes
Age - 39
Primary concern - dull & uneven skintone

Routine am - little or no cleanser, Emma hardy or Eve lom & konjac sponge, then botanics or body shop vit c toning spritz, TO buffet or hyaluronic & moisturiser (millions of little ones atm from my 4 advent calendars & goody bags), followed by biore spf & make up

Routine pm - una Brennan vit c cleansing oil, followed by hot cloth cleanse, as above or body shop camomile or Asda nspa, followed by toner, eye cream, oil (rotating Luna, chia serum, ren omega & may lindstrom), maybe a moisturiser after. Once or twice a week use 0.025% retina a & about once a week pixi glow or similar pads

Makeup - light/medium

Occasional treatments - weekly fave mask, whatever is about, working through tony moly sheet masks or a variety of clay masks

No notable past disasters stick out

Working well now - I think generally over the last year just putting a skincare regime in place has worked wonders but no single product screams at me to have been effective. Have liked Dennis gross eye cream, everything else I like is usually due to smell or feel of it

Dietary health concerns - none

Willing to spend up to £50 but would prefer closer to £10!

Specifically. Would like help with brightening & evening tone

Many thanks!

It contains Nonapeptide-3 Retino-Complex which performs similarly to Retinol without the irritating properties supposedly, but it's not the same as a true Retinol so can't really claim the same results considering how new the technology is.

I've never used makeupalley, Dulci. I always get really annoyed with sites that restrict part of their site with forced signups without being able to see what it's about beforehand, same with the SH beauty forum. I have sold a few AB bits that didn't work for me on the Reddit AB exchange that worked out well, it is indeed very good if you just want to try something without committing to the full cost of things.

OP posts:
Dulcimena · 30/12/2016 11:38

Ah, you're right about the forced sign up thing, Bo. I think that's a new-ish thing and yes it's very annoying. The product reviews and forums were always super helpful, but I think a fair amount is now more easily available on reddit.

botemp · 30/12/2016 11:40

x-posted with Dulci. Yes, that's my main issue with a lot of bloggers too, hardly do they take the time or even consider questioning the marketing talk and Deciem is particularly terrible with this of the press release that comes with the product. I don't expect them to read up on all the science or be experts in those fields but at the very least read up on it a bit, or simply omit that type of information if you're not sure about how true those claims are.

OP posts:
botemp · 30/12/2016 11:46

buckeejit, you're using a lot of products (and not quite sure which ones exactly) so it is kind of important to know what specifically is and isn't working for you especially since most of the mentioned products are already supposed to be tackling your issues. Also, would need to know what your skin type is, dehydrated is a secondary condition, not a skin type.

Hmmm, don't even know what wankery perfume talk is Xmas Wink. I've never ventured into a perfume thread, tbh... And don't fret, we will definitely not go there (wherever that is), though you are totally entitled to be annoyed if your hairdresser disregarded your instructions. That is soooo annoying!!! Also happened to me last time I went to my (admittedly extremely good) hairdresser, when she cut too much of my hair (even though she cut it dry). She does get the colour perfect, though the colour really dries my hair out...

Like I said in the previous thread, I think, I actually hate most perfumes, and only have 2 or so that I have been using for years and years. But was so pleased to discover a version of Chanel 5 that didn't constantly remind me of my grandmother Xmas Grin.

Was actually extremely lucky a few years ago to participate in a Chanel 5 workshop (was part of an exhibition in Palais de Tokyo in Paris). Was totally be coincidence cause I went to see something else and ventured to the side of the building when I saw people cuing with Chanel umbrellas. The two hour workshop, given by two experts from the top perfume school in France, was absolutely fascinating. We got to smell lots of the components of the Chanel 5 and learned about how/what smell creates certain associations in the brain. Needles to say all was done in Chanel style - the room was all black and white, we got to write things with Chanel pencils on Chanel paper etc etc...

Anyways... back to skin!

Caudelie - yes, their oil cleanser is pretty nice, though nothing special and the smell (if someone cares about that) is a bit like salad oil. I got it when it first came out. Haven't used it to remove makeup though. The Caudelie oil I Iove is the Polyphenol C15 (green bottle) and the moisturiser in the same series is also very good - not too thick but very efficient.

Shampoos - yeah, like bo said, if you use a lot of silicone rich conditioners and styling products you are going to miss the harsh cleansing of the SLS shampoos. You can "clarify" very effectively with apple cider vinegar (1 part vinegar to three parts lukewarm water). It also makes your hair soft (though it does dry it if you do it too often).

Still extremely pleased with the humectant properties of TO Martryxil. We were staying in an over heated and not so well ventilated cabin and walking and cycling in the cold and my skin did not get dehydrated at all (though my eyes did get a bit puffy)! And I had left both my AM and PM second serum/ humectant at home!

Made an amazing Italian style nut and dried fruit sugar free bread the other day that came out amazing! I modified an Italian recipe for Pangiallo, and substituted the sugar and honey for date syrup.
And thanks to you guys was reminded of that frozen cake, so made that as well...

Don't have any skin care to swap as I actually use everything I have. Do have some perfumes I got given that I don't ever use Xmas Wink (Burberry, I think).

AuroraPolaris · 30/12/2016 12:19

I've used the Sub-Q eye. It's kind of OK, nothing spectacular... but as I've said before, I'm mainly looking for long term results, as I hardly have any wrinkles (in spite of my age). I does contain silicones, and as I always use my eye cream around my mouth as well, I think it gave me spots there.

Actually almost done with the Mizon eye cream, so have to look for a new one. Should have gotten the Verso one in the sale on SkinCity...

Besides that don't really need anything - though want to get an eyeshadow palette. Was thinking of MAC x 9 in Amber. Does anyone have that?

AuroraPolaris · 30/12/2016 12:22

bo had a look at dB site, but found nothing tempting. The bag I wanted is gone (might still look for it in the shop, but will only buy if it's at least 50%)... And all the stuff I like on NaP is still €€€€ Xmas Grin and very, ehmmm, unpractical.

hollinhurst84 · 30/12/2016 12:28

The MAC one does look nice, I don't have it but have been tempted many a time!
I don't wear eye makeup now except mascara so I'm justified not buying it Smile

botemp · 30/12/2016 12:54

Oh, I've never ventured on those threads either, Aurora, on account of my perfume intolerance where everything just smells like toilet cleaner on me. It's more the marketing speak that surrounds perfumes that annoy me, it's the equivalent of all the high brow wine talk.

My Bijenkorf shopping was in store, got most of the things from my long list, held back on the bag as I'll be visiting a friend in Antwerp next week to do some damage and should probably catch the tail end of the sales in Paris end of January too so want to keep my options open also saw a Victoria Beckham bag online now, no clue how those wear long term but I like it.

You lot are so lyrical about both the Buffet and Matrixyl! It's not helping the decision-making process at all. Might just go with the Buffet as it's a bit of both.

Speaking of sugar-free baking, picked up a jar of Stevia because you mentioned using it, Aurora but mostly because it was discounted from €8 to €1,50 but not entirely sure how to use it, I know you're supposed to use less of it with some dividing factor but do you just replace it like for like in recipes?

MAC, Hollin? Xmas Confused Are you on another thread buying more makeup? Xmas Wink

OP posts:
botemp · 30/12/2016 12:55

Ignore the MAC comment, need to read better. Xmas Blush

Haha I was replying to aurora Grin
Nope, no makeup spending at all, I'm actually eBay selling Shock

hollinhurst84 · 30/12/2016 12:59

Grin at the slinking
I've managed to sell £170 worth of unused skincare and some swatched palettes and unused makeup brushes. Bonus!

botemp · 30/12/2016 13:12

Excellent, you've sold your giant TO HA stash, when can I be expecting my Stila palette? Xmas Grin

I once contemplated selling my now too large designer shoes on eBay until I heard about all the weird foot fetish people Shock

OP posts:
AuroraPolaris · 30/12/2016 13:15

So... what did you buy in dB? I am tempted by a clutch at The Outnet, though...

Did you buy powder stevia or liquid? I always use liquid, mainly as that is what I've always found in "pure" form (i.e. just with water and stevia). I've got a substitution table somewhere - I'll post it later.

Wow, well done hollin!!!

hollinhurst84 · 30/12/2016 13:17

Ha - I've sold a vast amount of dermalogica Blush
I have some microfoliant left but I'm putting nothing near my skin at the minute!
Sadly it's gone on boring stuff like new breeches and a years prescription prepayment

AuroraPolaris · 30/12/2016 15:25

Foot fetish? Hadn't heard about that either Hmm

GrendelsAunty · 30/12/2016 15:44

Botemp thanks for the advice and apologies for the delay in responding. The DC are happily watching a film so I can relax a bit!
I think my skin is probably combo - I certainly get oily across the t-zone.
I use a SPF in summer but didn't really think it was necessary in winter. I was using LRP anthelios, the tinted non-greasy one instead of foundation.
I'll order up the cleansing oil, either the DHC or TTDO. I'm about to finish my dermalogica ultra-calming moisturiser and was considering the clinique redness solutions moisturiser. Any comments?
I think you're right about dropping the HA. I've not used it for a few days and my skin seems a bit less stressed.
Thanks again!

ChocolateRaisin · 30/12/2016 18:27

JD I can offer a little decant of the PC clear extra strength BHA if you want to try before you buy. PM me if you are interested.

Bo the reaction I've been getting is small red blotches on my cheeks. Not sore or raw and fairly easily covered by make up. I'm going to try the vit c once or twice more and see if it happens again. It was much worse with LG.

I think the weather here isn't helping much at the moment, it's cold, frosty and foggy which leaves my skin feeling a bit sore. I've got some LRP toleraine fluid to try and also thought I'd give TO HA+ moisturising factors a try, hopefully that might help.

I have a full bottle of Alpha liquid gold if anyone wants a swap/ discounted buy.

AuroraPolaris · 30/12/2016 18:39

Oh yeah I've also got an unopened bottle of LG. Not using it simply because it doesn't fit in my routine anymore, so to speak, not because I don't like it or didn't enjoy using it.

AuroraPolaris · 30/12/2016 18:42

Hollin thnx for the reply. I also don't wear much eyeshadow on a daily basis, but are still on the lookout for a versatile but smallish palette, that would also be handy for traveling.

hollinhurst84 · 30/12/2016 18:43

Other option I guess is something like makeup geek individuals in a Z palette

botemp · 30/12/2016 19:24

It's not a blue Marni clutch, is it, Aurora? I've been eyeing that at the Outnet Blush.

The list from dB is long, I got the blue Acne boots they were the last ones and in my size I mean that's a sign or something the Iro bits; a white top, a sweater, and a jacket, lots of tights from a very expensive Italian brand that was previously unknown to me at 70% off that are giving my Wolfords a run for their money, I think there was more but can't remember now. I then hit up Cos and bought a load of things there, including a sweater that looks like a ballerina threw up on it (in a good way), the rest were more the boring bits some pants, pair of jeans, a good white shirt and an asymmetric white top. Bought some black jeans from a Danish brand and an Anecdote sweater in burgundy suits my new hair colour so totally justified and the Marni sweater I wanted no longer does Sad at a little boutique and then proceeded to ransack TkMaxx of all their Neom candles as they were deeply discounted (we were in TH with my family over Christmas). Ehm there was probably more. Oh yes, I also ended up buying the Sisley concealer because the LM remained out of stock (and I'd have to buy two colours that would never equate to the amount of ml in the Sisley one) and the Burberry one is definitely discontinued in the colour I wanted. Also like that it can be used on the lids as a primer which I was looking for anyhow but could only find heavy silicone versions. What convinced me most was that I tried it when wearing no base and it blended it in so beautifully and undetectable that it felt justified to me as I can wear it anytime and the 25% off from ICI offer made it somewhat okay. I figure at 15ml and how a little goes a very long way with it, it'll last me at least a year and the colour isn't one that I'll need to switch up from winter into summer, so overall a really sensible buy just nod along with me and leave me in my delusion.

There's a really lovely pink coat and silver leather skirt in my virtual basket at Zara currently, but am uhming an ahing as they're both not super practical. I love the coat but it's very thin so really a fair weather coat only and as much as I like the skirt (which is surprisingly versatile) I do wonder how fun the whole metallic look is post-festivities.

I've actually been eyeing this eye and cheek palette from Chantecaille too, it just looks really lovely (and I seem to be into pink a lot lately) but not too sure how versatile it really is as a travel palette.

OP posts:
botemp · 30/12/2016 19:25

Grendel

I’m not the biggest fan of Clinique as a brand, which has more to do with personal experience of it than anything else but it is a very pricey silicone heavy based brand that causes a lot of reaction with truly sensitive people and the Clinique Redness Solution moisturiser is quite true to form in that.

You can try the biore watery essence SPF for winter time, or carry on using the LRP Anthelios.
