MAC Ruby Woo

I can't seem to find anywhere I can get it over the counter so I can try it out! Will it suit me? I have olive skin, dark eyes, and mid-brown hair - I'm concerned it has blue undertones and mine are yellow. I usually wear orangey shades of red.

Also, if I should take the plunge, can anyone recommend a lip liner - preferably one that comes with a lip brush?

I love Ruby Woo (Russian Red is like the less matte less blue easier to wear version) but yes it's hard to work with, and even worse I feel a bit 2010 in it these days, you know like when everyone was doing 1940s looks? Bit basic.

I like Lady Danger too. I also really like Chilli if I need a red from MAC - a brown toned brick red, bit 90s. But I think I'm going to wear mostly dark plummy lips as my going out look this winter.

I wear Ladybug, that's a lovely red colour and not drying at all.

You can search online for dupes of MAC colours.

I really wanted the red lipstick worn by Phoebe Waller-Bridge in Fleabag. A search revealed that the make up artist for the series mixed the same colour, as the MAC version was not sufficiently long-lasting. I've ordered a dupe of the MAC lipstick from Superdrug.

Try Nyx perfect red or Alabama instead. Perfect red is very similar to ruby woo but in a much more lip friendly formula, and a purse friendly price!

I love Mac Russian Red. Ruby Woo doesn't work on me at all.

Lipstick Queen Saint Red (slight shine) and Sinner Red (matte) are lovely although packaging is not as good as Mac. They are supposedly very wearable reds.

How do the cheaper alternatives compare to something like Russian Red in terms of lasting power?

I can't speak for the cheaper alternatives, but I can go out for dinner and drinks wearing Russian Red and it only requires one retouch throughout the evening. The pigment and staying power is incredible.

Not nearly as long-lasting in my experience OP and I have a deep and abiding love of red lipstick, with an embarrassingly extension collection of them to match Blush

Right. I think I've determined on investing in Lady Danger and possibly in Russian Red too. I've seen some pics of women with similar colouring to me looking really stunning in Lady Danger.

Would also love to know what Phoebe Waller-Bridge was wearing in Fleabag...

The colour was based on Dare You. They mixed a matte version as Dare You did not have the staying power for filming. I've ordered Vamp by Sleek, which, according to a number of bloggers, is the same colour as Dare You, but matte.

I'm not a fan of MAC lipsticks at all, but I do like Lady Danger. Fabulous colour, very flattering

Lady Danger can be blotted down so that it's there but barely there if that makes sense, I love it like that in Summer.

I love Ruby Woo, it really suits me, but I agree it is incredibly drying. I wore it over the weekend and my lips are still recovering!

Also I'd recommend a look at the Nars velvet matte lip pencils. They are like chubby crayons but they're lipstick rather than liner. Dragon Girl is an AMAZING blue toned red, and Cruella is darker (maybe quite close to Fleabag's?). Red Square is a bit like Lady Danger. Great formula and lasts forever.

Dragon Girl is a stunning colour, I've often been tempted to try it. How do NARS fare re dryness?

Report
Pistachiois50pmore · 03/12/2016 22:59

I think the Nars pencils are amazing. They look like they'd be drying, being pencils and all, but they're lipstick through and through and glide on. You wouldn't call them moisturising but they're comfortable to wear and stay on. They're what they used on a lot on the set of Mad Men apparently. Get Dragon Girl is what I'm saying!

You're doing a good job of convincing me Pistachio Smile

Whoever invented that myth was probably working in the Estee Lauder marketing department.

Ruby Woo is dry, drags on the skin and the colour is nice, but there is much better stuff out there.

Sorry to hijack but has anyone tried Mac Diva lipstick? I've tried a skin test on my hand quickly the other day. It's a deep burgundy red. Ordered it online but just wondered how it wears. I'm brown skinned with red undertones.

Argh. I think I'm going to have to venture into the hell that is Westfield and actually try out these colours. I really like the look of Lady Danger but it is no shrinking violet of a colour and at this time of year I don't want to drop ££ before testing. Want to try out Dragon Girl too.

If you want to dip your toes in but not commit all the way, the H&M Lip Colour to To in Coquette is a passable dupe for Nars Dragon Girl. It's 4.99 Wink

I always wear MAC & I've just bought a set of the patent polish lip crayons.

However I have started to find the lipsticks really drying. I've just bought the NYX perfect red & a matching liner for £10 & it's amazing.

I'm interested in NYX too - NYX Bloody Mary is also a dupe for Nars Dragon Girl.

Lottapianos · 05/12/2016 17:55

Wow, NYX Bloody Mary is a stunning colour, and I would prefer a slightly more shiny finish so that suits me perfectly. Another to add to the list!
