MAC Ruby Woo

I can't seem to find anywhere I can get it over the counter so I can try it out! Will it suit me? I have olive skin, dark eyes, and mid-brown hair - I'm concerned it has blue undertones and mine are yellow. I usually wear orangey shades of red.

Also, if I should take the plunge, can anyone recommend a lip liner - preferably one that comes with a lip brush?

I have dark eyes and pale skin but with yellow undertones and it really suits me. I don't like it though, it far too solid/matt for me and quitedrying. Much prefer their Ladybug.

sarahnova69 · 29/11/2016 17:11

Thanks! Ooh, what is the Ladybug? A different formulation?

Yes, it's billed as 'lustre' instead of matt. It's a bit shinier but also much less drying and much, much easier to get right - getting ruby woo to look good takes a bit too much effort for me! It's possible I'm just lazy.

Sparkletastic · 29/11/2016 20:16

Ruby Woo is ridiculously dry. You have to have very moist lips to even apply it evenly. Mac Red, Russian Red and Lady Danger are all far better IMO. Russian Red and Lady Danger are more orangey reds. Mac Red is a 'true' red.

shins · 29/11/2016 20:39

I found it a shocking waste of money, having succumbed to the hype. I like a strong red and Urban Decay / Bourjois / Rimmel do great ones for a fraction of the price. Ruby Woo was extremely drying and unflattering.

Sparkesx · 29/11/2016 20:44

I suit red lipsticks but Ruby Woo did nothing for me. Go with Russian Red although as PP mentions, they do dry your lips out so apply a slick of Vaseline beforehand.

MadisonAvenue · 29/11/2016 20:49

The blue tones in it make it look awful on me. Reds from MAC that I can wear easily are Lady Danger and Dangerous.

Bawbles · 29/11/2016 21:07

I love Ruby Woo but need to prep my lips days before as it dries them out. I usually lip balm/exfoliate with a cotton bud in readiness.

Ruby Woo suits me more than Russian red but my favourite is Lady danger, it pops more against my yellow toned skin and feels more modern.

If you want a matte red I'd say save your money and get Revlon's Really Red matte lipstick. It's £7.99 as opposed to £15.50 and nowhere near as drying. (Revlon lipstick junkie here, so you can call me biased if you want. Grin )

Bananajam · 29/11/2016 21:24

I bought a gorgeous bright red lipstick from the MUA range at Superdrug - £1 and it's fab! Just a shame it has absolutely no lasting power. However, neither does my Mac lipstick so it could well be me..

Lottapianos · 29/11/2016 21:30

I agree with Sapphire that Revlon lipsticks are way better than MAC. MAC retro mattes are incredibly drying and uncomfortable to wear

Greenteandchives · 29/11/2016 21:34

I just got my dil a Ruby Woo for Christmas from Debenhams, good job I got a gift receipt by the sound of these comments. (She did ask for it tho....)

Lottapianos · 29/11/2016 21:35

Green, some women absolutely love it and wear no other red lipstick. I don't get it, think the formula is awful, but if she asked for it, you should be fine Smile

shins · 29/11/2016 21:40

Oh yes forgot to mention Revlon -gorgeous lipsticks.

ThisChristmas · 29/11/2016 21:42

I have Ruby Woo and Russian Red - Russian Red is by far my favourite. Woo is very hard to pull off.

I wear it with Mac lip liner in Cherry.

I bought it last week after recommendations on here and I don't like it HmmI find it very drying and it turns more of a deep pink on me than a classic red

sarahnova69 · 30/11/2016 07:53

Wow, thanks everyone. Mumsnetters are expert on everything.

Well, from this I have definitely concluded that 1) I'll buy the cherry lipliner (which I've seen some people wear solo as a less drying and more durable alternative to the lipstick!) and 2) I'll check out Lady Danger. I'll look into the Revlon one too. I'm not precious about posh makeup (my usual go-to red at the moment is Maybelline Super Stay in Ruby Rush) but I'd like a matte lipstick look as well.

I had heard Ruby Woo was supposed to suit nearly everybody, so kind of surprised some people on here don't feel that!

I have Ruby Woo and I love the colour but hate the formulation. It's ridiculously dry. So much so that I had to slick lip balm over the top of it! I found a lovely NYX Matt Red which is also a great red but doesn't dry my lips. And is half the price.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 30/11/2016 15:11

No Ruby Woo is not for me either and I LOVE red lipstick. ladybug is excellent and really flattering and I have neutral colouring.

SapphireSeptember · 30/11/2016 20:48

Yay! To prove how much of a Revlon lipstick junkie I am I have 54 of their lipstick shades (superlustrous, in matte, cream and pearl formulas,) 14 of the now sadly discontinued colorburst lipsticks, four of the lip butters and two of the Moondrops range. I don't think I have as many by any other brand. (And I have a LOT of lipstick! So that's saying something!)

sarahnova69 · 30/11/2016 21:19

I think you get to be a lipstick junkie, period, with that haul. I own 0 old-school lipsticks right now, and 3 shades of lip colour. Shock

I adore it. Perfect perfect red. But yes it's not a lipstick you can put on in a hurry. Another fabulous and similar red is hazard from topshop.

BusterGonad · 01/12/2016 06:13

I love Mac Ruby Woo, it's a pink toned red and it's 'in your face' red. Very mat, very time consuming to put in but it's worth it. It's a shade that apparently suits everyone, hence it's a best seller.

BusterGonad · 01/12/2016 06:14

I mean blue based red.
