Continuing from the previous thread. It's always so lovely to see new posters come and talk perfume. Everyone is welcome. Come and tell us your SOTD ( scent of the day) or ask us anything perfumey. Someone will know the answer! Get stuck in and get sniffing. You'll find no snobbery here!

Out of interest, who keeps a spreadsheet, or uses 'my collection' functions on Basenotes etc? Do you make personal notes?

VintagePerfumista · 13/01/2017 07:03

No, but I want to!

I also need a more logical "things I want to source" list other than reading blogs/books and running to ebay to add things to my (rather long list already of) searches!

I have now decided I need all the versions of that kitsch Max Factor cat in the dome from the 70s. Grin

MsRinky · 13/01/2017 11:45

I had resolved to try to not buy any more perfume for a while, but the Miller Harris Sale defeated me, and I accidentally bought both Terre d'Iris and La Fumee Classic, both gorgeous. They have sent me samples of Coeur du Jardin, Cassis en Feuille and Poirier d'un Soir as well.

It's my birthday next week and I am treating myself to a mooch around the Liberty perfume department. Has anyone tried anything from Vilhelm Parfumerie? I am intrigued by Smoke Show and Black Citrus in particular, but all of their scents sound really interesting.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 13/01/2017 12:26

i use the 'shelf' thing on fragrantica, it's got all the perfumes ive got listed bar a few that arent on their database, some that i want and some of the ones ive had in the past. its a shame you cant enter sizes for the ones youve got though, i'd find that even more useful tbh

MrsCocoa · 13/01/2017 14:03

May we see a picture of the MF cat Vintage?

Hello all,

I've just been convalescing from an operation and used the time wisely reading this thread and educating myself a tiny bit about all things perfume. I have recently made a few purchases from Perfume Parlour and wondered how long their orders generally take to come through? not at all impatient!

Also i would love to know if anyone has ever found anything that smells remotely like New West Aramis? The dupe on PP is out of stock and I've been hankering after smelling this for a nostalgic reminder of my teenage years!

My SOTD is Tresor, because I have just dug out a set of miniatures that must be yonks old and it hadn't been opened. It came with a Paloma Picasso, Givenchy Organza and Hot Couture, Anais Anais and Lou Lou. Very reminiscent of my youth :)

VintagePerfumista · 13/01/2017 14:28

This is a stock pic, but mine is the same. Isn't it fab?!

I have gone very 70s/80s kitch. (although am wearing classy Diorella today) am hunting out Kiku, and Babe, and all the cheap Boots ones, Coty, Morny, etc.

Took possession of a lovely old Emeraude yesterday.

Lovely, friendly perfume thread continued- Come and discuss all your fragrant foibles!
VintagePerfumista · 13/01/2017 14:30

PP can take quite a while I find- usually 7-10 days.

I love those boxes of old miniatures, I got one over Christmas- probably same range as yours, with Loulou, AA, Paloma Picasso, Fidji and Giorgio Armani

MrsCocoa · 13/01/2017 14:41

Thanks Vintage - brilliant (childhood memories are stirring).

Calminaqualm · 13/01/2017 16:44

MrsCocoa, I found both Dirty Honey and Maxed Out intriguing but not straight out loves.

Dirty Honey, for me, was waxed honey and vanilla, not over-sweet but with a definite tang of fresh wee! The wee then wore off after a while with white florals coming through. It ends up as a soft honey floral skin scent which has lasted all day. I won't be getting a full bottle, though, because of the top notes. NB, my sister absolutely loves this one, fb worthy for her.

I am perplexed by Maxed Out. I smell cumin very strongly all the way through, together with a strident tobacco. There is a slight lime note and also something sweet. I think I need to have another retest to see if I can distinguish the coconut, vanilla and rum. I can certainly smell coffee. My husband only occasionally comments on my perfume, but he really liked this one on me (just as I was coming to the conclusion that I really didn't!) I might get him to wear it and see if I like it better.

Calminaqualm · 13/01/2017 16:57

I'm conscious that my stash of perfumes is getting bigger and bigger and that I need to enjoy what I have and not buy any more! I looked at the Fragrantica shelf thingy, but have instead bought a little box together with some coloured index cards. It means that I can make notes on a card wherever I am. Also I've noticed that perfumes smell different on some days than in others and I want to capture that somehow. A spreadsheet or a database would be a good way of doing it but would involve spending more time on the computer than I am comfortable with. I rather fancy using yellow cards for citrus, pink for floral etc as well as coloured pens.

Haffiana · 13/01/2017 18:09

I am poking my nose in briefly because I swore off perfume forums a few years ago. I kind of prefer just sniffing and buying under my own steam rather than get caught up in a buying frenzy because of someone else's description. I don't at all mean that that happens here, just that I didn't like the effect on me!

I have a huge perfume collection. My perfume passion started in my teens, and in fact I still have some of those perfumes to this day (Vent Vert by Balmain and Casaque by Jean d'Albret were my first purchases. One has been so reformulated that it bears no resemblance to the original, and the other is discontinued. I still wear and love them both!). I have enough perfumes to not have to wear the same thing twice for several years... And although I have a core of perhaps 60 perfumes that I wear fairly often, there are others that I have probably only worn once or twice. I do remember very clearly what each and every one smells like - I just have that sort of memory when it comes to perfume - but I just wanted to say that I agree with Calminaqualm, that they can apparently smell different at different times. The smell isn't different as such, but my reaction is.

One thing that has always intrigued me is that I wake up each day absolutely knowing which perfume, or at the very least, which type of perfume I want to wear. Sometimes I might get distracted as I hunt it out and end up with something else but that rarely works out for me and I end up wishing I was wearing the one I originally thought of! Sometimes it is utterly inappropriate for the day's events although that is more because there are some perfumes I love to drench myself in (vintage Shalimar extrait. Oh yes!). Sometimes it is dictated to by the day's events - I wore Apres l'Ondee to a funeral recently and it was perfect.

MrsCocoa · 14/01/2017 07:23

Haffiana - do you know what factors affect your daily judgements, or is it less conscious?

VintagePerfumista · 14/01/2017 10:01

I get that sometimes- there are days when I know what I need to wear, or what I definitely don't want to wear.

What is everyone's general feelings about 4160 Tuesdays? I have never treid any, and tbh, one of the first descriptions (generic) I read, over on MrsGloss FB thingy, said something about all of them veering towards the sweet and fruity, so that was that for me.

Ahh, Haffiana- original Vent Vert, a thing of beauty. I have a cuboid little bottle of the real thing- not been able to date it though, and a big bottle of c1980s. Even though the big bottle is also "vintage" technically, it's nothing compared to the cuboid, and nothing whatsoever cf to all the polka dot bows and ribbons ones around now.

Haffiana · 14/01/2017 11:35

Cocoa, I just know. Sometimes it is because I am having a 'phase' of craving say, leather scents and I will go through almost all the ones I have, one after another. But most often I just wake up with a feeling.

Vent Vert, yes VintagePerfumista, the cuboid bottle is the original, and it was last available in the very early 1980s. So green it can give you a headache, and now well outside the EU limits for certain ingredients...

LesIncompetents · 14/01/2017 16:24

Haffiana I know what you mean about the perfume forums, the whole thing can get very addictive! I managed to reign in my addiction over the past year and had a ruthless cull of my bottles, unfortunately I think I was a bit too ruthless and now wish I still had some of them Sad
On the other hand, I've been wearing the ones I really, really love a lot more.

Vintage- I've tried some of 4160 Tuesdays earlier scents and I did find raspberry seemed to feature a lot- but in a good way (not overly sweet.) Quite enjoy Sexiest Scent but not sure if I want a FB...

SOTD is Guerlain's incredibly beautiful Chamade.

absolutelynotfabulous · 14/01/2017 17:49

On the hunt for a new perfume to replace my old trusted Chanel 5.

I'm down to Black Orchid and Boudoir. Black Orchid smells of sweaty arse (but in a good way, iykwim) and Boudoir is very.....not sure, really. Sweet, but rather subversive.

Any users out there? Going back to purchase tomorrowSmile.

VintagePerfumista · 14/01/2017 19:18

I like Black Orchid (though only have the Perfume Parlour dupe, I like that slightly medicinal balsamy thing going on.

One of my best friends is a big Boudoir fan, she says because her perfume "thing" is powdery. Her other big favourite is Ungaro Diva. (I don't know this)

SoTD Infusions d'Iris. at the risk of sounding repetitive, having a rotten head and a 6 hr training course this afternoon, I needed clean and soapy.

MrsCocoa · 14/01/2017 20:28

Am a serious 4160 fan - for their spirit, values and accessibility, as well as for their lovely perfume. Whilst doing highly creative work with quality ingredients they don't take themselves too seriously. A recent tweet.

I'm not generally big on fruity florals, but seriously admire their sumptuous fruit/sandalwood fragrances, like Babylon Sunset and Midnight in the Palace Garden. And it's out and out love for The Great Randello, Shazam! and Who Knew?.

And their workshops are great too!

MrsCocoa · 14/01/2017 20:49

Should mention that video was originally tweeted with a bone dry humour alert.

Gatekeeper · 15/01/2017 14:35

annoys me no end when EU ban certain ingredients or limits their use etc, when fags and alcohol are freely available

I have about 25 perfume Parlour dupes on my favourite list so am slowly ordering my way through them. Have TF knockoff Italian Cypress here if anyone wants it??- it smells too much of the aftershaves my late dad wore .PM me and I'll bung it in the post

SOTD is Boots Eau de Cologne Smile ; did some exercise this morning followed by long shower and didn't fancy anything spicey. No longevity but smells great and cost about 4 quid for a big bottle- great to splash on

Calminaqualm · 15/01/2017 22:25

Vintage, I must have over 50% of the 4160 range, mostly samples of various sizes, but also full bottles. A few are sweet and fruity, but most aren't and all of them are interesting.

"A Kiss By the Fireside" takes me straight back to my childhood when open coal fires were started off by my dad with wood kindling and paper spills. There is an aromatic lavander accord and some non-sweet roses, but they are in the background for me. It makes me feel quite emotional.

Another favourite is "Rome 1963" which is a white floral with fragrant tobacco and chocolate notes. I have never smelt anything like it. Fragrantica reviewers have picked up notes of old hymn books and yes, they are definitely there!

MrsCocoa, I don't have Babylon Sunset, The Great Randello or Shazam, but I aspire! I have "Who Knew?" but have found it difficult to appreciate because it is so non-sweet. I have put it away for now and will try it again when the weather warms up, or perhaps layer it with something else.

BaronessBomburst · 16/01/2017 00:19

SOTD is Sotto La Luna Tuberose from my dear friend Herr Tauer.
I want a full bottle of this. It's so, so lovely. I never thought I'd like white flowers but this is sensational. It's full, sexy, warm, feminine, tuberose and gardenia with honey and vanilla but without being sweet. There's also something slightly green, and dirty, and rotten going on, especially at the beginning. In fact, I don't love it until I've got through the first half hour. Then I'm blown away.
VintagePerfumista I think you will like this one.
And if you think LADDM is good, wait till you try Au Coeur du Désert. It's the extrait of LADDM with a richer, creamier, maybe even a touch more rose kind of smell.
I want a FB of that too.

VintagePerfumista · 16/01/2017 06:24

Gah! You were supposed to tell me 4160 were all mingers! Grin

Those 2 described by Calmina sound phenomenal. I must go and read some of the descriptions- apart from a quick look on the website last year and via MrsGloss, I've never paid much attention, mentally filing them away in the "brilliant name but essentially pink smelling category!

BB- added those to my list!

SoYesterday was an old Ysatis to mess with Chanel 5 SIL head. Grin She smelled lovely, and classy, and elegant but I did find myself thinking "wonder if she's such an acid piece of work because she doesn't have enough perfume in her life"

SoSaturdayEvening was the remnants of a phial of Dune Flowers to OC again....am hovering over a full bottle on Allbeauty but am unsure how much it has been changed since the 90s. Will have a read round first.
