Continuing from the previous thread. It's always so lovely to see new posters come and talk perfume. Everyone is welcome. Come and tell us your SOTD ( scent of the day) or ask us anything perfumey. Someone will know the answer! Get stuck in and get sniffing. You'll find no snobbery here!

Chypre 21 is SOTD; it's the first spritz since Christmas Eve, and it's lovely.

The virus that has had us all in its grip for weeks is confirmed as very nasty indeed. If you have a painful cough that isn't clearing up after a fortnight, with a low temperature that comes and goes, and the mother of all headaches, then please go to a GP. This turns into pneumonia and both DS and DH have needed antibiotics. I am slightly less unwell but started a few days behind them. Other symptoms: food tastes horrid unless its sweet, and you become very dehydrated unless you drink constantly. OTOH, DH has lost almost 14lb!

SilverHawk · 09/01/2017 18:48

MrsCocoa I'm sorry I called you snakeish Blush. I'd actually like some advice about the Cabochard, if possible. Grovel, grovel, grovel.
I got my mits on a lovely big bar of soap and the perfume in the old stripey bottle. The soap was great but the perfume was very disappointing,I just didn't get the love smelt like old pants on me. It's my skin/chemistry that doesn't agree with it? Ce n'est pas?

SilverHawk · 09/01/2017 18:52

Box top, not bottle!

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 09/01/2017 20:32

Oh, yes Apre l ondeé not Vol de Nuit. Doh.
Speaking if which, I bought VdN and Ambré Nuit from pp before Christmas, Ive used them, dd didn't get her hands on them, but can I find them? Totally vanished. I'm really in the mood for Vol too.
I've got L'aimant, both spray and cream. I love it, but can't bring myself to wear it as it was mum's perfume.

WaitrosePigeon · 09/01/2017 20:32

I received Black Opium for Christmas. It is divine!

MrsCocoa · 09/01/2017 21:02

No problem Silverhawk! Was profound love at first sniff when I stumbled across a discounted bottle of the 80s formulation (two stripes on cap) twenty or so years ago. I don't recall pants being involved - more smoke and cloves. But I don't find my fragrance memory very reliable over the longer term. Fashions change and my judgement seems relative (Bvlgari Black being a case in point - no longer seems dark after the last few years of ouds).

Here are two very different recollections both from mother's dressing tables:

Fan
Non-fan (not sure if the author confirms this is written about Cabochard, but the discussion below the article suggests this is the case

LesIncompetents · 09/01/2017 21:17

Hello, fellow smelly ones!
Love this thread and reading about everyone's favourite scents. I'm into big, spicy 80s orientals at the moment and have mostly been wearing Coco or Habanita.

SOTD is Tauer's Pentacord White, worth a sniff for violet lovers.

MrsCocoa · 09/01/2017 22:48

Vintage - yes I am. The old advertising copy is fascinating. Bit sad it peters out in 1999. Would be interested in her take on trends/gender roles over the last few years - but perhaps you need a bit of historical distance?

VintagePerfumista · 09/01/2017 22:55

She has a perfume line out herself now I notice Eris I think?

I smelled new Cabochard in a dept store over Christmas. Put it under dd's nose and went "oooh this is another for me" and she and went "yes, it's exactly your sort of thing" Grin I don't know the vintage version (but I will, in due course) but the modern blew my socks off.

Been in Liz Earle 1 (my favourite Liz Earle) since yesterday. I don't like the n9 at all in the set. Smells like fruit yoghurt. That will be up for grabs when I finally make a list of what can go.

Am hovering over a Givenchy III gift set but accidentally Grin bought an ancient bottle of Emeraude yesterday so might hang fire a bit.

Gatekeeper · 10/01/2017 19:00

hello everyone

I am a lurker with the odd post every year or so Grin
I have started wearing perfume again after buying a sample of Coromandel recommended on here- I feel so bloody great and stylish wearing it!

I have a question though; I have noticed people buying vintage bottles and part used bottles on here from ebay etc. Does the scent not go off? I've tried various testers over the years and some of them smell awful

I used to wear 'Envol' by Ted Lapidus and 'J'ai Ose' by Guy Laroche and Metalle by Paco Rabanne...bloody hate it when perfumes are discontinued. Loved Amazone as well

SOTD is Presence d'une Femme by Montblanc..cheap as chips from AllBeauty but is gorgeous.all woodsy, spicy powderyness

VintagePerfumista · 10/01/2017 20:03

You sometimes find the top notes have gone a bit, but if you persevere a while, the middle and base notes tend to be intact. In all my vintage purchases I've only had one that had totally gone, although this weekend I snagged one of those super nostalgic Max factor cats holding a bottle of perfume and it's minging lol. Doesn't matter, I wanted the fabulous packaging more than the actual scent.

SoTD PP Musc Ravageur. It's nice enough, spicy and warm, like any wintery spicy oriental. Wouldn't say it's "the sexiest perfume in the world" though, which I read in a review. Maybe the real one is!

MrsCocoa · 10/01/2017 21:30

Hi Gatekeeper - I remember Metal. Lovely dry down but the aldehydes at the start used to be a struggle to get past.

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 10/01/2017 22:25

Hello knowledgable people.
I'm hoping you can help me find a dupe or similar scent to Chanel Les Exclusifs La Pausa for me? I can't stretch to £200 a bottle, particularly as it has such poor longevity.

I love the powderiness offset against the leather. It's elegant without being prim and I'm mildly obsessed with it. Any suggestions welcomed.

MrsCocoa · 10/01/2017 22:43

A couple of Basenotes reviews suggest SL Iris Silver Mist - but I haven't smelt either of them. Think the SL is on the pricey end of things as well although I did see some Ebay options.

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 10/01/2017 23:15

Thanks MrsCocoa
I've just had a quick squizz on Fragantica and the reviews of Iris Silver Mist are hilarious/terrifying. Who knew?

MrsCocoa · 10/01/2017 23:59

One of us needs to try this! Get the orris = carrotty thing (Grey Vetiver being a case in point).

VintagePerfumista · 11/01/2017 14:10

SoTD L'Air du Desert Marocain. In sub zero temperatures needed something warm and spicy.

I do wonder if people think I've put some Karvol on a hanky though. It does at times seem a bit too balsamy.

SilverHawk · 11/01/2017 18:55

Thanks for your links MrsCocoa The second one with the TWTIES is hilarious but so true and sums it up perfectly Grin
I had seen the first link before and that is how I envisaged the perfume, it was not to be Sad
If you want to PM me I will send you the 'lovely' perfume.

Calminaqualm · 11/01/2017 19:19

Mrs Cocoa, how are you enjoying your Seven Crimes set from 4160 Tuesdays? (The sales price of £70 has gone back up to £150, btw, so you got a bargain!). I think Inevitable Crimes of Passion is my absolute favourite perfume. It's meant to smell like Terry's Chocolate Orange, but it has deep dark notes which I love.

GimmeeMoore · 11/01/2017 19:37

I've recently tried molecule one, which I cannot smell when I wear, but get compliments on it
But when I take off clothes, scarf I can smell it really strong.
It's odd to wear a perfume and not smell it on yourself, its a bit of a leap of faith

MrsCocoa · 11/01/2017 22:36

Calmina - am having the best fun experimenting and it's a treat that most are parfum. Just on my second pass through the collection. To mention a couple that are fresh in my mind (would be interested in your reactions...):

Dirty Honey - I get beeswax, vanilla with a touch of the mellower end of the woody note in Buddhawood Box, plus a really tiny hint of 4160's storming orange oriental, Shazam! . A sort of distant cousin of Seville a L'Aube but much more complex, comforting and less strident. Last for ages. I'd be up for a FB.

Maxed Out - in the first few minutes I get tobacco, lime and an almost industrial alcohol cut with sweaty cumin and something that smells like the outer hair of a coconut. (This doesn't read as nightclub to me but perhaps I've been going to the wrong places?). Goes on for ever but magically resolves into a sweet musk before finally disappearing. For me., one to admire and enjoy the back story, rather than wear on a regular basis.

VintagePerfumista · 12/01/2017 09:01

SotD PP Tobacco and Vanilla. I don't know the original. S'OK. I like the tobacco bit but not so keen on the vanilla bit and therefore prefer MH Feuilles de Tabac, (but I do have an original sample of that)

VintagePerfumista · 12/01/2017 19:07

Wanna see my stash? Grin

Lovely, friendly perfume thread continued- Come and discuss all your fragrant foibles!
MrsCocoa · 12/01/2017 21:05

We need a list Vintage!

VintagePerfumista · 13/01/2017 06:12

Heck, I need a list, I no longer have a clue!
