Continuing from the previous thread. It's always so lovely to see new posters come and talk perfume. Everyone is welcome. Come and tell us your SOTD ( scent of the day) or ask us anything perfumey. Someone will know the answer! Get stuck in and get sniffing. You'll find no snobbery here!

Vintage couldn't you have given the eBay seller a friend or relative's UK address? I have a very obliging aunt for such purposes!

FrustratedFrugal · 20/11/2016 12:53

VintagePerfumista my experience is that some sellers refused to send stuff to Italy because they had bad experiences with customs. This should not explain within-EU snootiness though!

SOTD Theorema by Fendi. You'd expect something abstract and difficult but it is a highly wearable gingerbread scent. I am getting a lot of soft rose notes atm.

VintagePerfumista · 20/11/2016 13:18

Baroness- I would have done, had I noticed the refund! Only spotted it this morning (from Thursday) and she's already relisted...might get my friend to bid (the one with the stash of old Avon that I covet!)

I am lining her up to receive some Surrender to Chance vintage goodies when I get paid next month. I really need to concentrate on Santa now, unless I spot something totally irresistible....which I will. Obviously.

Five2ate · 20/11/2016 13:31

The only thing is the perfumes I listed are what I've been wearing over the past couple of years and have gone off because they have started to smell sickly sweet! Sorry, that wasn't very clear.

I will look at the fragrance website and put in tobacco and see what that comes up with. If anyone can recommend a not to heavy tobacco based one I could seek it out and maybe use it as a starting point.

PinkissimoAndPearls · 20/11/2016 13:49

Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille is amazing, a friend of mine wears it (he is male but I gather it's unisex?I would totally wear it if it was within budget) He smells lovely really warm and just YUM

I'm off to look at the PP L'Air DT, can't believe I haven't thought of that yet!

Five2ate · 20/11/2016 13:51

Thanks pink sounds like a good place to begin. I've heard if Tom Ford 😀

AgeingArtemis · 20/11/2016 14:33

SOTD Fragonard fleur d'oranger, but I went on an impromtu sniff around debenhams, which now has it's christmas counters up.

So I'm now also covered in:
Acqua di parma Colonia, smelled good at first, then I thought it was too sweet (like gingerbread) on the dry down, now it's growing on me again

Hermes Eau d'orange verte- first smell is very strong of pure orange, too intense for me I thought, but I like it once it's calmed down

Tom Ford Neroli Portofino - unfortunately with all the other smells it's become overwhelmed and I can't smell it!

So I am currently very smelly Grin

VintagePerfumista · 20/11/2016 16:26

Five- you could always do what we all do, and order a bazillion mini dupes of things you like the sound of from Perfume Parlour.

We are all very impressed generally! (not a royal we, btw, I mean us addicts!)

Perfumista · 20/11/2016 18:57

Loretta by Tableau de Parfums. I have had a love affair with this for 4 years now. Just need to get Tobacco Vanille and Portrait of a Lady for my festive scents. Love scents that aren't run of the mill

FrustratedFrugal · 20/11/2016 19:00

Loretta is fab. As Theorema has faded, might enjoy a strong dose of tuberose tonight Wink

Perfumista · 20/11/2016 19:03

FrustratedFrugal- we have a mutual love of that scent. I used to be on the perfume thread several years ago...

VintagePerfumista · 20/11/2016 19:34

I am now snuggled down in vintage Dune Flowers to a thread member for facilitating me with that one!

Just had a sort out of my perfumes. Separated into 3 boxes now. FBs, miniatures/PP roll ons and samples.

It was very satisfying. No-one must know just how many are in those boxes though. Ssssh.

VintagePerfumista · 21/11/2016 08:03

Cuir de Russie this morning.

Allbeauty black Friday deals are up and running: amidst the horror stories most Penhaligons/Roger and Gallet are vastly reduced.

You could all try my all time minger of Peoneve (one of my nose samples, reminded me of forgotten nappies) Grin

I ordered dd some RG Bois d'Orange stuff.

FrustratedFrugal · 21/11/2016 08:19

Perfumista

SOTD Coromandel

Peoneve isn't my thing either but surely someone must love it! It is funny how differently people perceive perfume. So many people have said to me that they only wear fresh perfumes as those smell so nice and inoffensive. As an oriental lover, I've always struggled with 'fresh' - cucumber, melon and marine notes make me gag, and a shrill fug of rose oxide and lily hurts my amygdala. Hell is surely scented with Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche Wink

VintagePerfumista · 21/11/2016 08:22

I remember you and I discussing Peoneve when my samples came.

It is funny- you only have to read the threads on here, always my all time favourites get slated (I cracked open a sample of Angel last night to see if it was really as hideous as MN believes- just gorgeous. Rich, warm, wintery. Totally inoffensive Grin)

Two women got out of a car in front of me on Saturday- one had black stilettoes on with gold bits in the heel. They both had a gerzillion shopping bags and were clearly very well heeled (no pun intended) I could smell them at 30 paces, and it was pink and sugary. Ugh.

Stopyourhavering · 21/11/2016 10:38

Wow, just checked out all beauty website and they have lovely Penhaligons Blenheim bouquet and Douro at great prices!..... That's my Christmas sorted for dh and dd now!! Thank you!!

PinkissimoAndPearls · 21/11/2016 13:46

Talking of Pengaligon's, does anyone remember the perfume they did that smelt of lilies (can't remember the name). It's discontinued, I loved it. Love love lilies. Although DH said I smelt like a funeral Grin

Well, my PP Hypnotic Poison arrived and DOES NOT SMELL I am surprised as they are normally good and this should be a strong scent, I feel. What shall I order from PP to cheer myself up...I am actually considering Obsession as i would like some warm comfy nostalgia...

VintagePerfumista · 21/11/2016 19:14

The PP Obsession is very very sweet. You need to scour ebay for a vintage mini, completely different. I couldn't work out why I no longer smelled like myself in the 80s with a bottle of new Obsession (Ck, not PP) then smelled an old bottle my Mum had and it was visceral .

I had a mega self-indulgent squirt of old Ysatis EdP this afternoon, settling down to mark stuff, then got a phone call asking where I was- I was missing class meetings which I had in my diary for Thursday. So I hurtled off to school and have now obviously gassed everyone with big ambery 80s juice. Blush I usually go for demure Chanel 19 or something very crisp for school meetings. Hey ho.

TurkeyTwazzock · 21/11/2016 19:24

Hello perfumey people Grin

I'm a complete newbie to perfume geekery and after some hints and tips.

I wore Poison in my teens, D&G Feminine (sadly discontinued) in my early-mid twenties, then various J-Lo perfumes in my late twenties, and have been wearing Stella McCartney for all the years since.

Got bored of Stella and took myself around a few department stores and just couldn't find anything that really resonated. I ordered a load of samples from 4160 Tuesdays and have finally found a few scents I love. But I am struggling to identify what it is about those scents that makes me like them. I have a terrible 'nose' basically, and struggle to distinguish which ingredients are the ones I like. I think I am attracted to chypre perfumes mainly, and fruity florals to a lesser extent. I definitely dislike very musky, woody scents.

The 4160 Tuesdays scent I love is Doe in the Snow. Also quite like Tart's Knicker Drawer, Sunshine and Pancakes and What I Did On My Holidays which are all wildly different...

Any other recommendations for perfumes I'd like? I like quite big, long-lasting perfumes, I think and um...yeah...any hints on how to narrow it down to start picking sects I will like would be appreciated. Also, anywhere else I can get cheap mini samples? TIA

NotAMammy · 21/11/2016 21:04

Gagh, I went on a sniffing expedition this afternoon and confirmed that I seem to have cheapo tastes in perfume. Fenwicks Newcastle has recently welcomed some 'spensive and 'sclusive perfume labels.
I didn't like any of the Diptyque ones, or Frederic Malle, the only Tom Ford I liked at all was Neroli and I kind of liked two of the Dior Privee Collection in the bottle enough to spray on my wrist. I now stink of old lady.

And, disappointingly, DH didn't like Issy Mayake on him. He said it smelt of soap but I thought it was lovely.

(AND I couldn't find a dress for a wedding I have over Christmas. A total failure of a shopping trip.)

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 21/11/2016 21:30

Hi five2ate I am loving la fumee by miller harris. Very woody/ tobacco and I can't wait to try flankers.
notamammy and turkey how about Fire by Mary Greenwell? Most of us love it and I found it a starter "grown-up" perfume when I felt I had lost my way with cheaper perfumes. Bargain at the fragrance shop.

didireallysaythat · 21/11/2016 23:13

Maybe I could tackle this backwards. If I suggest perfumes I hate, could you suggest others I probably want to stay away from ? Probably not the spirit of the thread but I find I can feel stronger anti something than I can pro something (I'm embracing my strengths at being a pessimist). I can seek solace in my weak colognes....

Three starters for 10: Clinque's happy. Alien. Chanel 5.

Cockblocktopus · 22/11/2016 03:19

Hello! Back from holiday. I took two scents with me and only ended up wearing Eau de mozzie spray. Hmm

SOTD is lipstick Rose mmmmmmmmmm.

VintagePerfumista · 22/11/2016 06:12

I don't know Alien, but if you don't like Clinique Happy then you probably wouldn't like anything with citrussy hints (like anything mentioning Sicily/Portofino ;-) (I do wish they'd be a bit more creative with their naming, I find all these "grapefruits from Blackpool" styleeeeee scents so samey name wise it irritates me to try them!)

Chanel 5 is aldehydes, so you probably won't like almost anything I like Grin

(I understand it being easier to dislike things- I had to work really hard years ago at even being civil with the Tresor woman at work! I must sniff it again and see if it still so awful. In my head I hold it (and Eden) responsible for the pinksugar stuff around these days, but I may be completely mis-remembering!)

VintagePerfumista · 22/11/2016 06:14

Pinkie- I think one of the 40 samples Blush I ordered at the weekend is La Fumee, because of the description. Very much looking forward to actually smelling it now!
