Following on from the skincare routines post, what ingredients do you make sure you include in your products, for example, Vit C, Vit E, Hyaluronic acid?

TIA

I think the Beauty Brains guy recommended sodium cocoyl isethionate if you need a gentler surfactant. I got a nasty facial rash from a SLS laden facewash. I can still use SLS in shampoos but am careful not to overstrip my skin - when the barrier is damaged, all kinds of nasty reactions become more likely.

yongnian · 23/10/2016 11:25

Is it still the case that manufacturers have to list ingredients in order, from biggest to smallest?
I am reading ingredients much more closely and trying to see which products are highest in what ingredients (even if percentages are not available)
E.g. I've always liked LRP's efflaclar duo and repurchased a while back but mistakenly bought the wrong version. However, on inspection of its ingredients it seems quite high in niacinamide which I am planning to buy from the ordinary at some point in future, for another skin issue. I'd put it to one side and bit the bullet and bought the right one...but now looking at the ingredients more, I still have a use for it possibly, in another aspect of my tricky skin. Pleased! Have never taken close notice of the differences in the effaclar duo/duo K or AI but thanks to mostly this thread and a bit of research of my own, I feel I know how to get more out of the products. And avoid making expensive mistakes!

I drink 6-8 litres of water a day because of a chronic illness and it doesn't have an impact on skin de/hydration unfortunately. Although I think drinking a decent amount is good for the body generally. (Just not as much as me as that's obviously ridiculous.)

botemp · 23/10/2016 11:32

In the US, EU, and Japan yes (probably Canada, etc. too). It's one of the issues with Korean skincare, they're not required to list in order from highest concentration to lowest unless they're selling the product (usually different packaging) in the US, EU & Japan market.

Yes, understanding the ingredients and what they do helps a lot and also avoids you making some expensive mistakes. These days I can look at an ingredient list and know my skin will react positively to that or not where before it was always a process of careful trialling that felt somewhat more akin to Russian roulette.

Spreadsheet amendment 4. The LRP Redermic R has SPF so it's for the mornings. Doh. The Darphin serum arrived yesterday. OMG it's delish. Yes, very watery as per the reviews but it smells divine in a very very subtle way.

I've upped my SPF game. Went for a 5k run and made sure to apply SPF. I normally wouldn't. I am pretty good with SPF since a dermatologist put the fear of good in me plus there is skin cancer in my family. But for a 30 minute run this time of year first thing I wouldn't normally. Trouble is worry about Vit D then.

Intense exercise is another rosacea trigger btw. But it is so good for my mental and emotional wellbeing not to mention all the other positives, that I refuse to give it up.

Vitamin D is better to get from a supplement (just about the only vitamin worth doing that for). I use the Solgar gel ones in winter, would have to look up which ones specifically.

Can you return the LRP? Sounds pretty much like your other SPF/Retinol product that probably didn't have a high % of active Retinol.

Pupsiecola · 23/10/2016 13:32

I use a Better You spray for under the tongue as I am often deficient.

I will keep this one as I have used it before. I'm about to start using two new products so will use this LRP and then look at The Ordinary.

I take a very high dose of vitamin D and I'd definitely recommend. My skin really improved when I started. It's good for all kinds of things too. Other supplements that improved skin, zinc and evening primrose oil. Especially if prone to pms breakouts, (and pms full stop).

Also take q10 for something else but not sure it did anything for skin.

hollinhurst84 · 23/10/2016 21:12

I take zinc for my skin Smile
Don't use vit D as I'm a redhead so not needed oh and I take omega oils too

EnidButton · 23/10/2016 22:04

I'm the same skin shade as you Hollin Smile (saw you on the pale foundations thread). Maybe more cool toned but same very pale colour. I have dark brown hair though so would it be the same for me do you know or is it just people with red hair?

I do need extra vitamin D because of an illness but just out of curiousity.

hollinhurst84 · 23/10/2016 22:05

It's just redheads that don't need vitamin D

EnidButton · 23/10/2016 22:06

How cool! Thank you. I'll carry on with my supplements of it then.

hollinhurst84 · 23/10/2016 22:06

This is the gist of it (I c&p from Google)
Redheads can't absorb sufficient Vitamin D due to low concentrations of eumelanin in their body. This may sound like bad news, but this lower melanin-concentration means that gingers can cleverly produce their own Vitamin Dwithin their body when exposed to low light conditions

EnidButton · 23/10/2016 22:07

Redhead super powers. ✨

hollinhurst84 · 24/10/2016 20:19

The ordinary are now shipping globally
As you were Grin

botemp · 24/10/2016 20:31

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!

Must calm down now, stop hyperventilating, and restrain my credit card after all my responsible talk... So anything that hasn't impressed you Hollin?

I'm thinking Retinol and Vit C and possibly Niacinamide since I'll be switching night time moisturiser soon. Maybe some LA 10% for the body... stop me now please Grin.

hollinhurst84 · 24/10/2016 20:39

I'm not sure TBH what has made the most difference
The niaci is definitely "active" as it stung going over a spot! I like the HA/B5 and retinol
Not sure about the alpha arbutin but I've been using it in combination so is hard to say what's changed my skin the most
This is my skin yesterday

botemp · 24/10/2016 21:01

Still looking great then!

I still have plenty of HA so will hold off on trying that for at least awhile. Arbutin wouldn't be of much interest to me so don't think I'll be missing out with that. Am now about to delve into researching Matrixyl (peptides) as that would be a completely new ingredient to me and sounds very interesting. It's an anti-wrinkle ingredient shown to be more effective than Vit C and Retinol but I'm not sure my so far lack of wrinkled face would benefit from this as a preventative ingredient. Will report back when I source more info on Matrixyl.

hollinhurst84 · 24/10/2016 21:02

Oh yes I saw a bit about that but hadn't done much reading on it
I have one spot Grin but they don't last or scar and vanish quickly
Very happy to keep using the range and it's in my budget

botemp · 24/10/2016 21:02

*lack of - what am I on about, non should suffice.

yongnian · 24/10/2016 21:36

Hehehehehehehe botemp you have been so the voice of reason on this thread so your reaction to this news is very heartening Grin Grin Grin!!!!!
Happy shopping!!!!

yongnian · 24/10/2016 21:39

hollin are you using the Ordinary Vit C too? It gives warning about some sting with it but there has been nothing whatsoever...just out of interest, with you saying the niacinamide gives a bit of sting...I'm going with that one next too in a while...

hollinhurst84 · 24/10/2016 21:41

I'm not, no

botemp · 24/10/2016 21:54

I'd link to the thread where Hollin first told me about The Ordinary, yongian, where you can watch me get overexcited only to slump into a petulant whinger with a full on tantrum at the discovery they wouldn't take my money Angry, but that would be a tad embarrassing...

hollinhurst84 · 24/10/2016 22:04

I can imagine it arriving and you ripping it out the delivery persons hands whilst cackling GrinGrin
