Following on from the skincare routines post, what ingredients do you make sure you include in your products, for example, Vit C, Vit E, Hyaluronic acid?

TIA

Has anyone tried the Timeless Vit C + e + ferulic serum recommended by the hot&flashy50 blogger what a name jeez

Her skin looks quite like mine, sort of fragile.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 15/11/2016 17:08

Have you tried the Cosrx snail 96, pure snail goo, I swear by it. Loving their Overnight Rice pack as well, so hydrating.

EnidButton · 15/11/2016 17:22

I've just read some rave reviews about Kiehl's 'nightly refining micro peel concentrate.' This review lists the ingredients musicalhouses.blogspot.co.uk/2016/07/kiehls-nightly-refining-micro-peel.html?m=1 and doesn't exactly rave over it but it sounds like something that might work for me. Anyone tried it? Think it's fairly new out.

Lumpy do you mean the cream? I think it has dimethicone... that is why I chose the Mizon all in one Black Snail one

LumpySpacedPrincess · 15/11/2016 18:18

This one, 96% pure snail goo. This is the rice pack, honey at the top, rice at the bottom of the review. I use the honey in the morning and the rice at night and they work so well for me, affordable too.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 15/11/2016 18:23

See what you mean now, the rice and honey packs do but the snail 96 doesn't. That's just a snail essence, like a serum and it sinks in beautifully.

EnidButton · 15/11/2016 18:42

Talk to me about snail goo. 🐌 Why is so good?

botemp · 15/11/2016 18:58

Do you mean the pink packaged Snail Masks, Aurora? I think they have fragrance in them but I was eyeing CosRx's Holy Snail Mask. The only reason I really succumbed to the Benton one was due to their cruelty free certifications, although thinking about it now I suppose those only really look at whether the products aren't tested on animals, not so much how snail mucin is extracted Sad. I shall wait and see how I enjoy the steam cream before contemplating the lives of more snails...

I've tried it out on my hand Enid and it did seem to be pretty effective. I think it's a replacement for their overnight biological peel (ingredients are similar) that I've used in the past, which was also gentle and still effective.

I asked for a sample but only really looked at the INCI later and chose not to use it due to the high % Alcohol Den., and Caustic Soda (Sodium Hydroxide) being pretty high up in the INCI. Interesting to see Hydroxyethyl Urea pop up again, it does seem to be an ingredient on the 'rise'. I can send you the sample if you like?

EnidButton · 15/11/2016 19:01

bo That would be really good, thank you! You sure you won't use it though? It's the most tempted by a ££ product that I've been for a while. There's nothing in there that I know breaks me out and the reviews are mostly favourable. You sure?

botemp · 15/11/2016 19:15

I'm not using it, completely forgot about it and only came across it when I was digging up the avocado eye cream sample. You're welcome to have it. Just PM me and I'll pop it in the post with or without the avocado cream sample if you like.

So Snail Goo, it's a bit of a tough one as it is much loved and been used since ancient times (and the cause of most instant conversions to all things AB). Basically the snail goo contains a lot of hyaluronic acid, copper peptides, antioxidants, and some other proteins and peptides that I can't remember that are all beneficial to the skin. Mostly touted for acne scarring, but also for (premature) aging by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. Thing is, it's a natural product so the efficacy is very dependant on environment, type of snail used, etc. so as an ingredient it's a difficult one to gage as not all snail slime are created equal. Beauty Brains article for more elaborate explanations.

I don't know how people with hyaluronic acid sensitivities would react to this either, in theory since you have it naturally in your own skin there's a possibility that a natural derived version of it like in snail goo or those Tundra fermented mushrooms are less likely to cause irritation and can help address dehydration issues.

EnidButton · 15/11/2016 19:22

bo thank you very much! Really appreciate that. 🌟 I'll pm you now.

I was going to ask how they get the snail goo from the snails but do I actually not want to know? I'm quite fond of snails for some reason.

botemp · 15/11/2016 19:28

Aurora has a really friendly video somewhere I believe about the women farming them in Chile. The term is officially 'manually stressed' but in some instances it just means they walk over metal mesh all day, it has to be somewhat practical, I suppose.

The Beauty Brains article did mention there were several patented extraction processes, so who knows. I do have to own up to being a hypocrite as my abalone sheet masks contain abalone (and not their slime) which are sort of sea snaily and I didn't really contemplate their fate much before buying them. I'm sure there have actually been plenty of products that I've used with ingredients that aren't all that animal friendly but for whatever reason the snails welfare matter to me unless they're in my garden.

Pupsiecola · 15/11/2016 20:40

Not really skincare ingredients related, but after thinking about it for months, if not years, I had some fillers today for the first time (nasolabial lines were very prominent). Very, very happy with the results. I just had to tell someone!

Oh Bo please don't go to lots of trouble. You are so kind and I'm sorry it's hassle.

So, my various snail stuffs arrived today. I have the Benton snail bee steam cream, and shark sauce and snail water samples from holy snails. Will report back in due course. I've always been slightly sceptical of snail stuff (anything that gets super hyped makes me a bit suspicious) but will be happy to be proved wrong.

DH asked me how they harvest the snail goo, but I don't think I really want to know tbh...

AuroraPolaris · 15/11/2016 21:19

Well done pupsie! I haven't had anything done yet but I think women should do whatever they like and no one should be ashamed of it. If it makes you fell better why not!
I think the problem is when women (in the media etc) don't admit to that stuff and create illusions of impossible beauty which creates a lot of pressure on young women who are less aware. Same as successful women not admitting to having 24/7 help at home and pretending they "have it all"Angry

Lumpy that is a beautiful INCI list

I'm on phone now but can look for that snail goo extraction vid tomorrow. If I remember correctly most of the goo that goes to the AB market is produced in Chile by these cooperatives. Yeah it's a tough one... I'm vegetarian so I do feel slightly hypocrite though on the other hand if it feeds families of women using traditional knowledge...

AuroraPolaris · 15/11/2016 21:25

And by the way we have HA almost all over our bodies as it's one of the main components of the connective tissue, which is spread all over. The other main factor is collagen. One of the main aging factors of tissues and joints etc is actually the change in the collagen structure, when the sol vs gel balance is gone. This you can really influence by moving and stretching... and to keep producing collagen the body also needs vitamin C. And here we are again back at one of our favorite subjects! Of course I'm not claiming atopic Vit C can influence these collagen structures Grin

AuroraPolaris · 15/11/2016 21:26

And snail goo was also used in the times of Hypocrates to heal wounds etc Grin

EnidButton · 16/11/2016 01:23

I complained for many years about being mistaken for a teenager, "I'm a grown woman fgs", but now I'm glad I have my baby face/features to help out because otherwise I think I'd look older because of illness. Which feels unfair. As it is, I still look younger than I am but I'd like to look better and more like I think I should. So I'm ranking up my skincare routine and would definitely consider small non invasive surgical treatments like fillers or Botox. Sometimes life doesn't 'give you the face you deserve', sometimes life is a twat that needs showing who's boss. If that means a bit of filler to look the way you want then crack on I say.

How did you find someone to do it Pupsie? I idly looked once and there was so much choice, where do people start?

EnidButton · 16/11/2016 01:27

Lots of snail info! Going to read that link.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 16/11/2016 07:43

As a ginger person I'm used to being quite pink, goes with the territory. The snail has really helped with this and it makes my skin feel so hydrated and comfortable. I think that and Rose hip oil have helped my skin the most, plus Vit C, Acids, Ceramides, Licorice etc etc etc Grin

Pupsiecola · 16/11/2016 08:07

Enid I went to my local private hospital (having researched and discounted other options). I had am eyelid lift there a few months ago Shock. I had hereditary very droopy eyelids and had contemplated surgery for years. They made me feel crap about myself more and more and were affected ting my vision (the joy of looking up without moving my head is utterly new to me!). So I went back to that hospital as my surgeon was excellent.

As you can tell, I'm investing a little in myself this year. Hence trying to get to grips with skincare ingredients that make a difference.

It already got shipped out, Pupsie, no worries. I'll send out yours today, Enid.

I totally agree with Aurora that it shouldn't be anything to be ashamed of or pretend it's just mother nature's good genes when it isn't. Personally I don't think I could ever do Botox on account of the animal cruelty aspect, it's classed as a medicine therefore every individual produced batch -so not just in development of the medicine- is tested costing the lives of hundred of thousands of animals annually. I struggle with it where there is requirement for it in medicine but if it's actually curing something I can accept the sacrifice where necessary but I'd find it really hard to do it purely in the name of my own vanity, but surely don't judge anyone who choses to do so as I believe these things are individual choices. Besides, I think you have to start in your late twenties to get the best out of Botox so I've missed the boat already.

The nasolabial fold fillers tend to be HA and seem far less scary to me but I'm hoping that my genes and regimented skincare routine will keep me satisfied, but who knows further down the line. I also wonder how people who overdo it will end up looking as they age, especially those that specifically seek out the 'plastic' look purposefully, I just can't help but feel that if you're intention is to freeze time at some point it will stop working, and then what?

I am majorly intrigued by lasers though, I do it for hair removal (with a professional) on the face and already notice what a difference it makes (which is just a side effect) but most cosmetic dermatologists do seem to be moving away from the injectables in favour of this (probably because it's pricier and hairdressers can't do it) with specific treatments for the skin and anti-ageing. The results that I have seen are really impressive and on a biological level it actually improves skin in a similar way as actives do (just far more efficiently and quickly) where injectables are merely temporary implements.

Pupsiecola · 16/11/2016 11:18

You are so kind bo. Thank you so very much.

I have looked at lasers but am nervous about the effect on my sensitive skin. But it's sth I would consider further down the line.

Agreed re those who overdo fillers etc. With both my surgery and fillers I stressed that I wasn't looking to look years younger. I just wanted to look fresher. I looked permanently knackered and angry before lol. I've really taken control of my nutrition and body these last couple of years and am fitter than I've ever been. But I looked exhausted.
